This weekend in NCAA College Football a huge game is coming up for fans of the underdog, the trick plays and the team that just doesn’t get enough respect for how good they are. I understand NCAA college football is not on the top of the mind of most fans in this city but if you are looking to see a terrific story blossom on your television sets Saturday night this game is for you.
The Boise State Broncos are a divison 1 football team from Boise, Idaho who alot of people had never heard about until the 2007 Fiesta Bowl where they capped off an undefeated season shocking Big 12 conference power Oklahoma with a statue of liberty trick play that will live on top 10 greatest plays countdowns for years to come. Other fans in this city know as BSU as the alma matter of Eskimos quarterback Jared Zabransky(co-mvp of that 2007 fiesta bowl game). Others may know Boise State by their infamous blue football field affectionately known as the Smurf Turf. But no matter how you know about Boise State the fact of the matter is this they are a fun team to watch and an even more fun team to fall for in the prestigious sport that is American college football.
Boise State plays in the Western Athletic Conference a smaller conference compared to the likes of the Pac 10 SEC or Big Ten but they have given fans something to cheer about proving over the past decade that it’s possible to be good without the name Texas, USC or Notre Dame. The Broncos have gone a combined 124-20 since 1999 making 10 bowl games and going undefeated in those matchups. But because they are not comparative in size to the power schools in college football they are not recognized with an automatic berth into the BCS national championship regardless of their record and thus despite two undefeated seasons in the last four years have never played for the right to be the best team in college football.
This season though there’s a chance for that to change as they have started out the number 3 ranked team in the country and are 2-0. This Saturday they will play their first home game of the season on national telvision (6pm, ABC) against the Pac 10′s 24th ranked Oregon State Beavers. A win in this game, a perfect regular season in their fairly weak conference and a little help with some of the power schools losing games then this may just be the years for the Broncos to have the chance to fulfill their cinderella story and play in a national title game.
But all that aside tune into this game for the spectacle it will provide. A football team from Boise, Idaho clad in their flashy blue and orange uniforms on their blue turf in front of a capacity crowd of 33,610 blue and orangle clad fans playing the game that has put this small public school of 19,00 students in Idaho on the map. They are extremely talented led by one of the hottest young quarterbacks in the game, junior Kellen Moore and that along with a hungry team to show North America that they are for real on national tv and this game should be a beauty and definitely something to check out for any sports fan. Or maybe i’m just crazy and living in the wrong country for my budding love for NCAA Sports to be supported. Your thoughts?
