The Weekend Sports recap is coming a day later than normal this past weekend because I wanted to include my thoughts on the outstanding game five in the American League Divisional Series last night.
The Texas Rangers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 in the deciding game with the winner to face the New York Yankees in the ALCS. The Rangers won with remarkable aggressiveness on the base paths. In the first inning, while at second base, Elvis Andrus went home on a routine ground ball to first. We then saw almost a mirror image play by Vladimir Guerrero in the sixth when Ian Kinsler hit into a fielder’s choice with Guerrero at second. Guerrero, like Andrus, caught the Rays napping defensively, and just kept running for home. Heck, even catcher Bengie Molina had his first stolen base in four years! The Rangers deserve it, as they won the first divisional league series in Major League Baseball history, where the road team won every game.
The ALCS starts Friday, while the NLCS starts Saturday between the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies.
In th NFL, Prospect Magazine Publisher and www.anysportanytime.ca co-founder Terry Nistor was in attendance for a real gem Monday. Brett Favre threw his 500 TD pass for the Minnesota Vikings, but it wasn’t enough as the Jets won 29-20. Who would have thought that next week with the Cowboys playing the Vikings, that both teams would be 1-3.
In the CFL, the Eskimos will have to thank the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for a remarkable comeback against the B.C. Lions. Down 32-11 heading into the fourth quarter, Winnipeg had three fourth quarter touchdowns to send the game to overtime before winning 47-35. The win helps out Edmonton because it doesn’t allow the Lions to get too far ahead, as they remain only two points up on the Eskimos in the CFL West.
Finally, in the NHL, the Oilers are 2-0, the Flames are 1-1 in the early going. The Oilers won a game where they were soundly outplayed by the Panthers Sunday, while the Flames got two assists from Brendan Morrison, who I plan to blog about in the coming days, in a 3-1 win over Los Angeles.
