The third ranked player in the world will not be competing in Flushing Meadows, New York for the fourth and final major later this month.
According to the Associated Press, Kim Clijsters of Belgium, the two-time defending champion of the U.S. Open has pulled out of the event due to a stomach injury.
Clijsters had to pull out of the second round of the Rogers Cup last week due to the injury. Clijsters was leading China’s Jie Zheng 6-3, 1-2 at the time.
Clijsters has won two other major titles in her career, the 2005 United States Open and the 2011 Australian Open, where she beat China’s Li Na 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the final.
Clijsters had missed a significant part of the 2011 season when she suffered an ankle injury while dancing at her cousin’s wedding earlier this year. She missed the French Open and Wimbledon because of that bizarre injury. Clijsters is a fan favourite on the WTA because of her warm personality and the fact she is one of the few mothers on tour.
