Team Canada got a significant amount of offense from their defense on Day Four of the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships at Rexall Place Thursday night.
Scott Harrington, Brandon Gormley and Ryan Murray all recorded multi-point games as Canada defeated Denmark 10-2. Harrington, a second round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins out of the London Knights, recorded one goals and three assists, Gormley a first round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes out of the Moncton Wildcats, recorded two goals and one assist, and Murray of the Everett Silvertips, recorded two assists.
If there was one area of concern for Team Canada, it was their overall team discipline. They took eight minor penalties, including five that involved unnecessary stick work. Brett Connolly and Jonathan Huberdeau, two players Team Canada is counting on offensively, each took a penalty with less than five minutes left. However, even though Denmark scored on the power play, Canada got shorthanded goals from Connolly and Brendan Gallagher of the Vancouver Giants and draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens.
But the bottom line is Team Canada needs to better behaved to win the Gold medal. The schedule gets a lot tougher the rest of the way than it did tonight. Team Canada’s next game is Saturday against the United States.
In other World Junior Hockey Championship news, Michael Futa, the Director of Amateur Scouting with the Los Angeles Kings, might have just become one of the richest scouts in professional sports this week. How? Well, he won $87,000 last night in the 50/50 during Canada’s 5-0 win over the Czech Republic.
