Red Wings trade Commodore to Lightning

In a bit of an interesting deal, the Detroit Red Wings have traded Mike Commodore to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a seventh round pick.

Commodore this season only has two assists in 17 games.

Wow, how much has the stock of Commodore, a native of Fort Saskatchewan, fallen? The 32 year-old defenceman seemed to have had his career on the rise when he joined the Red Wings blueline in the offseason, but it seems now the Red Wings didn’t value his skills much at all if they were willing to trade him to a club not making the playoffs this season for a seventh round pick.

But at the same time you have to realize that no team in hockey has done more with late round picks than the Red Wings over the last 20 years because of their excellent Swedish scouting.

Commodore, who has previously played for Calgary, Columbus, New Jersey, Carolina and Ottawa, won a Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006 and went to the Stanley Cup Finals with Calgary in 2004 where they lost to Tampa Bay.
