The Calgary Flames moved back into eighth spot in the Western Conference Sunday with a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Curtis Glencross and Jarome Iginla each scored a goal and an assist for the Flames. Glencross has now scored in seven straight contests. Kent Nilsson and Gary Roberts have the Flames’ record with a goal in eight straight games.
It is just not that Glencross has scored in seven straight games that is interesting. The former Oiler is scoring big goals. On Sunday, Glencross broke a 2-2 tie, just moments after Minnesota’s Erik Christensen scored two goals in a 2:20 time period to tie the game.
It was also a memorable day for Flames rookie Sven Baertschi as he scored his first NHL goal 1:43 into the third period from Tom Kostopoulos and Derek Smith. It will be interesting to see how much time Baertschi will get as the Flames try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2009. Olli Jokinen also scored for Calgary, while Erik Christensen scored for Minnesota.
David Moss, playing in his sixth game since missing 47 games with ankle surgery, might have had the best game he has had this season, leading the team with seven shots on net. Olli Jokinen was also dominant on the faceoff circle, winning 13 of 19 draws.
Flames rookie Guillaume Desbiens also got on the game sheet by having a fight with Wild rookie Matt Kassian.
Calgary next plays San Jose on Tuesday night. They currently are tied with the Los Angeles Kings for eighth place in the West with identical 32-25-12 records, but the Flames have two more regulation wins.
