Italian Premier believes in penalizing Italian soccer

According to the Associated Press, Italian Premier Mario Monti is suggesting that Italian soccer should be suspended two to three years after its latest match-fixing scandal.

Since last year, fifty people have been arrested. The most high profile player involved to date is defender Domenico Criscito, who currently plays professionally in Russia. Criscito won’t be on the Italian squad at next month’s European Championship in Ukraine and Poland because he is currently being investigated.

Another high profile name that is being investigated is Juventus coach Antonio Conte, while he was coaching Siena from 2010-11.

The Italian football scandal came to light in 2006 when it was uncovered there was a strong relationship between team managers of selected organizations and referees. As a result, Juventus was relegated to Serie B and AC Milan and Fiorentina were out of the UEFA Champions League.

I think match fixing is one of the most terrible things that happens in sports! People spend huge money to watch sports and for there to be fixing involved is simply awful.

I agree with Monti that Serie A should be shut down until all those responsible are punished.
