Donovan Bailey Invitational needs TV deal to enhance status

Since I wrote my latest blog on the Donovan Bailey Invitational, I’ve been wondering what the event needs next to increase its prestige in the international track and field community.

All of a sudden, it made perfect sense what it needs to be given the same legitimacy on the Edmonton sports scene, as another elite Edmonton sports competition–The Edmonton Indy.

The answer? Television.

TSN was very busy this weekend with Euro 2012, but Sportsnet and the Score, or even CBC, should have stepped to the plate. There is no better way than enhancing your product to the Canadian sports fan, than by having your event on national television.

That should be the next step that Peter Ogilvie and his team should focus on.

If they already tried to have a television deal for this year, than shame on the networks because I think Canadian sports fans would have been more interested in the Donovan Bailey Invitational than taped canoeing in France, taped equestrian at Spruce Meadows and World Wrestling Entertainment (not entertaining at all) which were originally scheduled on our sports networks!
