Senators sign Erik Karlsson long term– is he worth that much?

The Ottawa Senators have signed Norris Trophy candidate Erik Karlsson to a huge contract.

Just how much?

Well, it is for seven years and worth $45.5 million. Wow? Really? The answer is yes.

I know Karlsson had 78 points this season, the most among all defencemen in the NHL, but there is one statistic that I cannot get out of my head. The bottom line is he was a -30 just last season before he turned things around substantially in 2011-12. Who is to say under a changed system a few years down the road in Ottawa, and  Karlsson will return to his questionable defensive skills?

Too many times general managers look at one season and project greatness later on down the road rather than analyze the entire career of a particular player before handing him an enormous contract. I feel that is what the Senators’ General Manger Bryan Murray has done here with Erik Karlsson!
