Spain beats Portugal in Euro 2012 Semis

Team Spain has advanced to the final of Euro 2012.

Wednesday in Donetsk, Ukraine, Spain defeated Portugal 4-2 in penalty kicks.

For the second consecutive game in the tournament there were no goals scored in regulation or the thirty minutes of extra time. On Sunday, Italy defeated England in a similar fashion.

Portugal actually played very well and probably deserved a better fate. Star player Cristiano Ronaldo had many glorious scoring opportunities, but each time shot it over the net. The major question right now is why he wasn’t chosen to shoot in the shootout, and that will be a question head coach Paulo Bento will be faced with for the rest of his coaching career.

You may actually compare Bento with former Team Canada coach Marc Crawford for making questionable shootout decisions in Canada’s semi-final loss to the Czech Republic at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano.

Germany will play Italy in the other semi-final on Thursday.
