Your first round leader after the first round of the United States Open is American Michael Thompson of Tucson, Arizona.
Thursday at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Thompson shot a four under par and currently has a three stroke lead on an impressive quintet of golfers–2001 PGA Champion David Toms of the United States, American Nick Watney, who became the second consecutive golfer in a major championship to record a double eagle, 2010 U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland, Justin Rose of England, who won the 2012 WGC Cadillac Championship, and a guy by the name of Tiger Woods, who has won every significant golf tournament in his career.
So who is Michael Thompson? He is a 27 year-old golfer ranked 107th in the world according to the latest World Golf Rankings list. He attended Tulane University, but had to leave for the University of Alabama after two years when Hurricane Katrina hit the Alabama region. This is only his third Major Championship. He tied for 28th at the 2008 U.S. Open and missed the cut at the 2008 Masters.
Don’t expect Thompson to remain in contention by Sunday. He apparently took his wife Rachel, a doctor in physical therapy, on a date last night in San Francisco. But for now, he has a three stroke lead.
