Marylebone Cricket Club (better known as MCC), the world’s most famous cricket club, is currently on tour in Canada. The primary purpose of the tour is to promote cricket in emerging nations.
On18 July, 2012, the MCC and Alberta contested a 50-over match at Westwinds Cricket Park in Calgary under ideal conditions—blazing sunshine and clear, blue skies with a cool, gentle breeze to make for a great day.
Match Report:
The MCC won the toss and skipper Jason Gallian opted to bat. The openers were watchful in defence but kept rotating the strike. The later batters scored at a brisker pace and the storied club managed a defendable target of 215 which included 12 penalty runs for slow-over rate by Alberta.
Left-hander Tom Webley top-scored with a patient knock of 56 (run out), with admirable contributions from Rajiv Sharma (46) and Mark Wright (45).
Khurram Tahir, a bit wayward at times, took three valuable scalps in his allotment of 10 overs. At the other end, skipper Khurram Chohan was economical in his 9 overs, picking up 2 important wickets for 21 runs.
In response, Albertakept up with the required run-rate of 4.3 per over.. By the 28th over, they were well past the half-way mark. Left-handed opener Yasoob Ul-Haq, was methodical in his approach and picked up runs whenever they were there for the taking.
He was eventually run out on exactly 50. Sudeepta Aurka, looking a bit scratchy at first and flashing and missing on numerous occasions, settled down to reach 31. Captain Chohan, hitting aggressively, sawAlbertaacross the finish line on 41 n o.
It was a happy day for Alberta as it was sweet pay back for a resounding defeat at the hands of the MCC in 2005.
The MCC are now off to Toronto to play three more marches before flying back to England.
