Is Sam Gagner really worth $3.2 million?

The Edmonton Oilers came to terms with restricted free agent Sam Gagner on Friday to a one year deal worth $3.2 million.

I know Gagner had a remarkable game where he set the Oilers record with eight one amazing night against the Chicago Blackhawks this season.

But after that, Gagner’s numbers could only be considered average, with 39 points in the other 74 games he played.

The Oilers have decided Gagner is now a veteran, even though he is 22 years of age, and will be used to mentor the long list of talented young guns.

But really? At $3.2 million? Wouldn’t Edmonton Oilers General Manager have been better off plying some hardball and using the money on a defenceman or gpaltender? Devan Dubnyk is not the answer.

The Gagner signing comes one day after the Philadelphia Flyers made headlines by offering all-star defenceman Shea Weber to a 14 year deal worth $110 million. The Nashville Predators now have until Wednesday to match the offer. It’s too bad nobody offered Gagner a fraction of that amount.
