It was a great day for the Germans at Wimbledon on Monday in round of 16 action.
German Sabine Lisicki, the 15th seed, defeated top seeded Russian Maria Sharapova, the French Open champion 6-3, 6-4. Lisicki, who has a history of injuries, seems to be very healthy now.
Lisicki advanced to the semi-finals at the 2011 Wimbledon, only to lose to Sharapova.
Lisicki, has battled injuries so frequently in her career, she once needed to be carted off in a wheelchair after injuring her ankle.
The other German to advance to the quarterfinals was Angelique Kerber who had absolutely no problems in destroying Kim Clijsters 6-1, 6-1. I don’t think anyone has seen Clijsters ply an entire match of tennis and only win two games!
Other players to win their fourth round matches on Monday were Serena Williams of the United States, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, Tamira Paszek of Austria, defending champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, Maria Kirilenko of Russia and Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.
