Team Canada is one win away from an Olympic medal in women’s soccer. Today at Coventry Stadium, the Canadians beat host Great Britain 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
Canada opened the scoring on a goal in the 12th minute by Jonelle Filigno of Mississauga, Ontario. Foligno received the ball from midfielder Sophie Schmidt of Winnipeg and had no problems kicking the ball to the back of the net.
Then 14 minutes later Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia scored on a free kick to put the Canadians comfortably out in front.
From there, the Canadians played solid defensively. Great Britain did have a couple of decent scoring opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize.
Team Canada will now play Team United States in the semi-finals at Old Tafford, home of Manchester United of the English Premier League. The game will take place Monday at 12:45 p.m.
The Americans beat New Zealand 2-0 in another quarterfinal in Newcastle. According to CTV, the Canadians are 0-22-4 since their last win against Team USA in 2001.
Japan, who beat Canada 2-1 in the round robin, will play France in the other semi-final.
