The United States have defeated Canada 4-3 in the greatest women’s soccer game of all time.
The Canadians had many opportunities to win the Olympic women’s semi-final game– three in fact, but at the end of the day couldn’t hold on to their lead.
With Canada leading 3-2 with ten minutes left, Canadian goaltender Erin McLeod of St. Albert, Alberta was called for holding on to the ball for too long. The Americans were granted a free kick and were awarded a penalty kick after a Canadian hand ball. Then Abby Wombach delivered to tie the score before Alex Morgan scored the game winning goal in extra time.
However this was also a vintage game for the greatest soccer player that has ever played. Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia recorded a hat trick and will go down in history as one of the best female athletes Canada has ever produced–in any sport.
Team Canada can still win a medal and will play France for bronze on Thursday (6:00 a.m., CTV). France lost 2-1 to Japan.
