Mortimer strikes Canadian gold at Paralympic Games

Team Canada has won their second gold medal at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

On Friday in the women’s 50m freestyle swimming competition for athletes who are the least disabled, Summer Mortimer of Burlington, Ontario set a world record by posting a time of 28.10 seconds. New Zealand’s Sophie Pascoe won the silver medal and Elodi Lorandi of France won the bronze medal.

Team Canada also won three other medals Friday. Calgary’s Brianna Nelson won the silver medal in the women’s 50m butterfly swimming competition, Nathan Stein of Maple Ridge, British Columbia won the silver medal in the men’s 50m freestyle swimming competition for athletes with a minimal disability, and Virginia McLachlan of Windsor, Ontario won a bronze medal in the women’s 200m track event for athletes with cerebral palsy.

 

Team Canada has now won six Paralympic medals–two gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal, and are ninth in the overall medal standings after two full days of competition.
