Adam Van Koeverden of Oakville, Ontario has won Canada’s 12th medal of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Van Koeverden had the lead in the men’s 1000m kayaking race at the 750m mark but couldn’t hang on and was passed by Norwegian Eirik Veras Larsen with about 200m to go. Max Hoff of Germany won the Olympic bronze medal.
Larsen beat Van Koeverden by 0.708 seconds for the gold medal.
For Van Koeverden, it was his fourth Olympic medal of his career. He won the Olympic gold in the men’s 500m kayaking race and an Olympic bronze in the men’s 1000m kayaking race at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and an Olympic silver in the men’s 500m kayaking race at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Unlike the last two Olympic Games, the men’s 1000m kayaking race was the only event Van Koeverden participated in at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The International Olympic Committee decided to drop the men’s 500m event in favour of the men’s 200m event instead.
Team Canada now has won one gold medal, four silver medals and seven bronze medals at the 2012 Olympic Games.
