The log jammed Western Division in the Canadian Football League continues to get tighter. After Edmonton’s blow out loss to the Montreal Alouettes last night, the Calgary Stampeders can tie the Eskimos with a win against the Toronto Argonauts at 4-3 (Saturday, TSN, 5pm).
The Stampeders acquired offensive lineman Obby Khan this week. Khan was part of the 2011 Eastern Division champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers before announcing his retirement.
In Toronto meanwhile, the Chad Kackert experiment as the Argonauts’ number one running back begins with Cory Boyd off to Edmonton.
The Argonauts management must know something special from Kackert, who has -3 yards rushing this season.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching:
Sunday–ATP–Western & Southern Open Final–CBS–10:30am–In a U.S. Open tuneup in Cincinnati, Ohio, a Swiss tennis player is guaranteed to be playing tomorrow as Wimbledon champion Roger Federer takes on Stanislas Wawrinka in today’s semi-final. Federer or Wawrinka will be playing either Serbia’s Novak Djokovic or Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday’s final.
Sunday–MLB–Texas Rangers @ Toronto Blue Jays–Sportsnet–11am–At 56-63, the Blue Jays are in last place in the American League East and have had a poor August going 5-11. The Rangers meanwhile lead the Oakland Athletics by five games in the American League West and are 18 games above .500 at 68-50. Outfielder Josh Hamilton currently leads the American League with 34 home runs.
Sunday–CFL–Saskatchewan Roughriders @ British Columbia Lions–TSN–5pm–In a battle for first place in the CFL’s Western Division, the Lions are coming off a very gritty defensive performance in a 18-9 win over the Toronto Argonauts on August 6. Don’t forget they are the more rested team at the moment, having not played in 18 days. The Roughriders meanwhile were sluggish defensively last week in losing 28-20 to the Edmonton Eskimos. The Lions are 4-2 and the Roughriders are 3-3.
