Umpire Seminar at Victoria Park

Saturday, April 20th, 2013

Welcome to the brand new 2013 cricket season!

If you are an umpire, or thinking of becoming one, and resides in Edmonton or its surrounds, you are welcome to an open-house umpire seminar on Sunday, 21 April 2013 at beautiful Victoria Park Clubhouse starting at 12 noon. A delegation of top umpires from Cricket Alberta Umpires & Scorers Association, headed by Cricket Alberta president Manzoor Chaudhary and umpire Sanjeev Kad, will present the seminar.

The main focus of the seminar is to explain the aims and objectives of the emerging Association, to discuss recent changes to cricket laws and to review important, old laws. The hope is to make you a better, more informed umpire and to minimize on-field mistakes.

Coffee and a light snack will be available.

See you there.

Regards,

Ron.

Sticky wicket for Canadian-trained umpires

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Courtesy: Mr. Colin Hoare of Toronto:

The selection of umpires from Canada to represent the country in international matches has rarely been transparent. All too often, the umpire chosen to stand at international matches outside of Canada has been nominated without any attempt at making the selection in a competitive manner i.e. by the submission of the names of all the most suitable candidates, along with their curricula vitae, to a proper panel under the aegis of Cricket Canada. Furthermore, no input from the Umpire Certification Committee of Cricket Canada has ever been sought.

As a result, umpires that have been chosen have not always been the best, sometimes to the embarrassment of the cricketing community in this country. The latest nomination, that of Vivian Johnson as representing Canada on the “Emerging Panel” of umpires has to be considered the most egregious example of appointing of all. While Mr. Johnson has had considerable experience in the Caribbean, notably in Jamaica, his presence in Canada was totally unknown to the Umpire Certification Committee. This calls into question how his name could be put forward since he has already been nominated by his home country. Furthermore, there was once again no competitive process to identify suitable candidates from the pool of very talented umpires that this country has developed.

It goes without saying that a nomination “out of the blue” as it were, has had a demoralising effect on all the umpires across the country who have worked hard to improve their skills, and who have shown to their peers that they are worthy of consideration. Sadly, they have again been ignored. Despite all the umpire development work that was initiated by Tony Gudgin many years ago, and is currently kept going by Kantilal Patel, there will be no chance for truly Canadian umpires to represent this country until the I. C. C. steps in and creates demands that Cricket Canada puts its house in order. The consensus is that there is no point in trying to get the support of ICC America because at the very least turn a blind eye to what is going on, and (in the opinion of many) is actually participating in the process.

Canada retains Auty Cup

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Canada remains champions of the Auty Cup on account of winning the first innings (198/114) in Florida. For those of you who tuned in yesterday, you would have noticed the players dressed in traditional whites. Today, with the popularity of the shorter formats, the players are more often seen in colour clothing.

Historians believe that the Auty Cup (Canada v USA only) is the oldest international fixture in the world, older than the famed Ashes competition between Australia and England.

The Auty Cup was launched in 1844 — before the Civil War (1861-1865) — in New York on the site where the New York  University Medical Centre is currently located.

Please go to cbcsports.ca to catch live action in a 50-over match between the two countries. The USA batted first and scored 194/9 and Canada is responding splendidly at this posting.

Leeward Islands cruised to easy win over Canada

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Canada lost their match against the Leeward Islands yesterday in Antigua, emphatically, and now has a record of 0-2 going into Tuesday’s contest against Guyana.

The Canadians won the toss and unwisely opted to bat first. In T-20 cricket, it is better to chase, particularly when you are the decided underdogs.

As in their match against the Windward Islands, they were given a terrific start by the openers in the 6-over powerplay, but could not build on it. The middle-order continues to fail and could only muster 108 all-out in the final over. To stand a realistic chance in this format, a score of 160 or better is necessary.

Raza-ur-Rehman, 30, and Hiral Patel, 24, were the top run-getters for Canada. For the Islanders, Kieran Powell hammered a flashy 47 n.o. whilst Javier Liburd chipped in with a breezy 33. The West Indians won by 8 wickets.

The Canada/Guyana match on Tuesday, January 17 can be seen on Sportsnet One at 3:00 p.m. EST or 1.00 p.m. MST.

A fight against time

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

  Dear Friends:

It was with difficulty, and a sense of melancholy, that I have decided to break the news to you. I struggled with the pros and cons of whether or not I should. But each way I looked at it, it made no sense to keep it to myself.

I figured everyone will find out one way or another and thought it might as well be through me while I still can.

I have recently been diagnosed with advanced metastatic (spreading) prostate cancer. Unfortunately, my family physician, in 2009, when I had my previous general check-up (most recent was this August), did not specify that my PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigens) level be checked even though I indicated that it should. An elevated PSA level is the first indicator of prostatic abnormality. His response was simply: “You do not need to worry about the prostate at your age.”

It means that my cancer was not detected in the early stages when it is highly treatable. I am now in a fight for my life and I will fight on till the end. My greatest fear is not so much about me but for those dependent on me (my kids 6 and 13).

As such, I will first try to win this fight before coming back to discuss the game I love and spent so much of my life involved in. It was my honor and privilege to have been able to contribute to the site over the past year plus; and to have known you all through your stellar literary work at ASAT.

With kind regards and best wishes,

 Ron Saywack.

Edmonton triumphant over Calgary on brand new turf wicket:

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Another memorable weekend of Masters Cricket was played at scenic Victoria Park on August 6/7 — Calgary v Edmonton. After heavy downpours overnight and sustained lightning and thunder activity, it did not appear as if the much-anticipated Alberta initiation of a brand new turf wicket at VP would be possible. But, happily, the skies cleared out and the temps warmed up considerably to make for a great day’s cricket.

Chris James, immediate past president of Cricket Alberta, was honored for being the driving force behind the conversion to turf wicket at the venue. It is a significant accomplishment in that it will now make Alberta a choice venue when national and international events are scheduled in Toronto. Currently, all international matches are assigned to Toronto, which now holds a decidedly unfair advantage over the rest of the country. In his honor, Chris was given a brand new white cricket ball signed by the masters of both cities as well as the opportunity to captain Calgary on the field and he did not disappoint.  (more…)

Calgary T20 2011 won by United

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Scorecard: United 221; St John’s 190.

United Cricket Club emerged victorious on Sunday over St. John’s CC in the Calgary T20 playoffs at Inland Cricket Park in northwest Calgary.

United won the toss and elected to bat first on a pleasant afternoon blessed with blue skies and blazing sunshine. The openers fell quickly and cheaply, but skipper Manzoor Chaudhary and Canadian national player Hamza Tariq began to set the tempo for the rest of the innings by methodically carving fours and sixes in each over all over the ground.  (more…)
