The University of Calgary Dinos might not have won the Vanier Cup this past season, but were the big winners on Monday in the first round of the 2013 Canadian Football League draft.
A total of three Dinos were drafted among the top five selections on Monday. Defensive tackle Linden Gaydosh was drafted first overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was followed by the Montreal Alouettes selecting linebacker Mike Edem with the third overall pick and the Alouettes selecting Steven Lumbala with the fifth overall pick.
A poor decision by former Edmonton Eskimos General Manager Eric Tillman is a major reason why Montreal had two first round picks in the 2013 draft today, while the Eskimos had none. On September 12, 2012, the Eskimos traded their first and fourth round pick of this year’s draft with kicker Derek Schiavone for kicker Brody McKnight.
The Toronto Argonauts have signed Romby Bryant from the Calgary Stampeders on Tuesday.
Bryant, who was released by the Stampeders last week, has signed a two year contract with the Argonauts.
Bryant has 295 catches for 4428 yards and 31 touchdowns in his CFL career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders.
Last season Bryant caught 55 passes for 678 yards and two touchdowns.
Bryant has been brought in by the Argonauts to compliment Chad Owens, who had a breakout season in 2012 where he was named the Canadian Football League’s Most Outstanding Player and set a CFL record for the most all-purpose yards in a single season with 3,863.
This week on 15MOF we recap a very interesting Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers, we discuss the opening weeks of the NHL season and how the Edmonton Oilers are looking and we answer the question: who owns the Phoenix Coyotes?
In the GABBYs: Vincent Lecavalier, David Beckham, the NFL, Ottawa’s CFL team, PED’s and pro sports blackouts. The Punchline this week is OHL ref Joe Monette.
The Edmonton Eskimos have decided to part ways with the top Canadian in the Canadian Football League for 2011.
On Tuesday, the Eskimos traded running back Jerome Messam for a sixth round draft pick in the 2013 Canadian draft.
In 2011, Messam became the first Canadian since Sean Millington of the British Columbia Lions in 2000 to rush for 1,000 yards in season.
However a knee injury against the Calgary Stampeders in the 2011 Western Division Semi-Final meant Messam was not 100% in 2012. After Messam was cut the Miami Dolphins, he rejoined a crowded Eskimos’ backfield that had Cory Boyd and Hugh Charles in the mix.
It appears the Edmonton Eskimos are not set on Matt Nichols as their starting quarterback for the 2013 Canadian Football League season.
On Thursday, the Eskimos acquired quarterback Mike Reilly from the British Columbia Lions with the second round pick in the 2013 Canadian Football League Canadian draft for the second round picks in the 2013 and 2014 Canadian Football League Canadian draft.
In 2012, Reilly, while backing up Travis Lulay for the Lions, completed 53 of 74 passes for 684 yards and four touchdowns, while Nichols backing up Kerry Joseph and Steven Jyles for the Eskimos, completed 48 of 83 passes for 884 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Edmonton Eskimos are bringing back a big name as their defensive co-ordinator. On Friday, it was confirmed by the Canadian Press that former Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Greg Marshall will be the team’s defensive co-ordinator for the 2013 season.
Marshall has great experience in the CFL as a defensive co-ordinator, winning a Grey Cup with the Edmonton Eskimos in that role in 2003. He has also held the defensive co-ordinator position in Saskatchewan, Hamilton, Ottawa and Winnipeg.
In a blockbuster Canadian Football League trade, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have acquired slotback Geroy Simon from the British Columbia Lions on Thursday.
Simon, is the all-time leader in receiving yards with 15,744. The native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania is 37 years of age and is coming to the Roughriders at the end of his Canadian Football Hall of Fame Career.
The 2006 Canadian Football League Most Outstanding Player Award winner, Simon 12 seasons with the Lions after two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to commence his career.
The Lions received wide receiver Justin Harper and a third round draft pick in the 2014 Canadian College Draft in return.
It is interesting that Simon follows in the footsteps of slotback Jason Clermont, who was released by the Lions near the end of his career in 2008, and spent three seasons with Saskatchewan before retiring.
Well the Steven Jyles period in Edmonton as their starting quarterback was short lived.
On Monday night the Eskimos released Jyles after one season where he played ten games, threw only six touchdown passes and 1756 yards.
Football and life in professional sports in general is not always fair. You can make the case that Jyles simply was not ready for the starting job and was put in a difficult situation to start with, as he was the key component the Eskimos received in their blockbuster deal with the Toronto Argonauts last year that saw veteran star Ricky Ray head out east.
Well it appears that Jimmy Johnson was correct after all. Just days after the former Dallas Cowboys head coach and FOX Sports analyst tweeted that Marc Trestman would be going to the Chicago Bears, Trestman is indeed off to Chicago.
Trestman, who has spent the last five years with the Montreal Alouettes, will try to follow in the footsteps of Bud Grant and Marv Levy rather than Hugh Campbell and Mike Riley.
The Bears are making a strong commitment to offense in the NFC North and hope that Trestman will be able to deliver the same sort of magic with Jay Cutler that he had with Anthony Calvillo.
The San Diego Chargers have hired former Calgary Stampeder quarterback Mike McCoy as their next head coach.
McCoy was the Stampeders’ backup quarterback to Dave Dickenson in the 1999 season, and completed 117 passes in 183 attempts for 1669 yards, ten touchdowns and two interceptions. The Stampeders lost to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 32-21 in the Grey Cup.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats simply didn’t take very long to find a head coach. On Monday, less than a week after firing George Cortez, brought Kent Austin back to the Canadian Football League.
Austin had spent the last two years as the head coach at Cornell University. His stock skyrocketed after leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to the 2007 Grey Cup Championship. With not a lot of significant talent, the Roughriders defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-19 for their third Grey Cup in franchise history.
Prior to spending two years at Cornell, Austin went to the NCAA as the offensive co-ordinator at the University of Mississippi, the same university he quarterbacked in the early 1980′s.
The move by the Tiger-Cats to fire George Cortez should not come as a huge surprise because of how horrible Hamilton was defensively last season.
