NFL great Junior Seau dead at age of 43

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Junior Seau (J.J. Hall, Wikimedia Commons)

One of the best NFL linebackers of all-time is dead.

On Wednesday, according to TMZ, Junior Seau committed suicide at his home in Oceanside, California.

Seau played in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins from 1990-2009.

A 12-time Pro Bowler, Seau was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1992, and was on the NFL’s all-decade team in the 1990s.

He had 1849 tackles, 57 sacks, 18 interceptions, three fumbles and 21 pass deflections.

In 2006, Seau retired with the San Diego Chargers and had an emotional press conference, only to come out of retirement and sign a contract with the New England Patriots four days later.

Another interesting part of his Seau’s life is that he set up the Junior Seau Foundation in 1992 to help children with drug and alcohol awareness and educational programs to help prevent juvenile delinquency.

Seau is survived by two sons and a daughter.  Seau’s death today also reminded me of another outstanding NFL linebacker who was taken from us too soon. Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles also died at the age of 43 in 2004. White passed away at the time of cardiac arrhythmia.

Vilma suspended for 2012 NFL season–was the suspension too harsh?

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

The New Orleans Saints saga is continuing.

On Wednesday, the NFL came down hard on players directly involved in the cash-for-hit bounty system the Saints have had in recent years.

Linebacker Jonathan Vilma was suspended for the entire season, defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove was suspended eight games, defensive end Will Smith was suspended four games and linebacker Scott Fujita was suspended three games. Hargrove is now playing for the Green Bay Packers and Fujita is now playing for the Cleveland Browns.

In March, the NFL suspended Saints Head Coach Sean Payton the full season, defensive co-ordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely, General Manager Mickey Loomis for eight games and Assistant Coach Joe Vitt for six games.

NFL comes down hard on the Saints

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

The National Football League came down hard on the New Orleans Saints today by suspending head coach Sean Payton for a full season, defensive co-ordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely and General Manager Mickey Loomis for eight games for instituting a crush-for-cash bounty system.  The Saints also lost two second round draft picks over the next two years and had linebackers coach Joe Vitt suspended for six games.

Throughout professional sports over the last century it has been commonplace actually for coaching staffs to request for an injury on an opposing player. Major League Baseball managers have been suspended at times when pitchers hit opposing  batters. Hockey coaches have also requested their players to go after certain opposing players on the ice.

The only real difference between the Saints fiasco and the generic examples mentioned above is that the Saints offered financial benefits to those who might cause a serious injury to an opponent or be carted off on a stretcher. Either way, the NFL was right to set a proper standard here and enforce significant penalties. Hopefully other professional sports follow their lead and investigate altercations when it seems rather obvious when curious situations have taken place.

Tebow traded to Jets! Who cares? A certain someone wants to know if she’s part of the deal.

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

One report says that this is Erin Drewes and another claims this person to be Lucy Pinder, reportedly Tim’s lady friend, I don’t care what her name is but somewhere in NY there’s a certain QB asking himself…” I just want to know if he’s bringing this young lady with him cause I’d personally like to welcome her to the Big Apple!”

Elite wide receivers change teams

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

A pair of top National Football League wide receivers will be in a new uniform next season.

On Tuesday, the Miami Dolphins traded wide receiver Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears for two undisclosed draft picks.

Marshall, a three-time Pro Bowler caught 81 passes for 1214 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. His best year came in 2007 when he had 1325 yards receiving as a member of the Denver Broncos. When Marshall was traded for two draft picks in 2010, it was one of the very first articles I wrote for www.anysportanytime.ca.

With Marshall leaving Miami for Chicago, I’m not sure if Peyton Manning will find south Florida as an enticing destination anymore. I think it looks more and more like Manning will play for the Tennessee Titans next season. Manning played for the University of Tennessee, has been highly touted by owner Bud Adams and the franchise has a good offensive line as shown by the amount of holes running back Chris Johnson has been able to find in recent years.

In San Francisco meanwhile, the 49ers have acquired wide receiver Randy Moss to a one year deal. Moss spent time with three different teams last season–in Minnesota, New England and Tennessee. His best season came in 2003 in Minnesota when he caught 111 passes for 1632 yards and 17 touchdowns. Unlike Marshall, Moss seems to be on the downswing of his career however. But he does go to a team needing a wide receiver as tight end Vernon Davis got most of the looks from quarterback Alex Smith last season.

Where will Peyton Manning go?

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Peyton Manning (Craig O'Neal, Wikimedia Commons)

Peyton Manning is no longer an Indianapolis Colt. Yesterday, the Colts and Manning parted ways after Manning delivered a Hall of Fame career.

Since playing with the Colts in 1997, Manning won Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears in 2007, has participated in the Pro Bowl eleven times, and has been a four time National Football League Most Valuable Player.

Manning is also the greatest Colts quarterback of all-time. Better than Johnny Unitas. He is the Colts all-time leader in touchdowns (399) and passing yards (54,828).

So why did the Colts think now was the time to part ways to their greatest franchise player ever? Well, a back issue sidelined Manning for all of last season and the Colts weren’t willing to pay his $28 million option bonus payment.
