Alberta Sports Hall of Fame inducts ten

Ten inductees were announced Friday for the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in Red Deer.

Out of then ten, I am honoured to report that Canadian Sports Centre President Dale Henwood will be inducted May 25 at the Red Deer Sheraton.

Henwood is one of the most pleasant sports executives in Alberta and a person I have known for close to twenty years. The Canadian Sports Centre plays an instrumental role in supporting high performance athletes as they strive toward podium finishes. Henwood also was a member of the Alberta Sports Council and was an assistant coach for the Canadian men’s hockey team that won a Bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville.

Other inductees are:

–Barb Clark Parolin–Stettler–Bronze medallist, Women’s 4x100m freestyle swimming relay, 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal

–Gary Deman–Calgary–Head Coach, St. Francis High School Football Team

–Blythe Hartley–Edmonton–Bronze medallist, Women’s 10m synchronized diving, 2004 Olympic Games in Athens

–Ed Molstad–Edmonton–Former Defensive End, Edmonton Eskimos

–Bob Niven–Calgary–Former Chairman of  the Calgary Olympic Development Association

–Russ Parker–Calgary–Former owner of the Calgary Cannons

–Larry Robinson– Innisfail– six-time Canadian Tie-Down Roping Champion

–Michael Slipchuk–Edmonton–1992 Canadian Figure Skating Champion

–Lorne Starko–Red Deer–statistician for WHL’s Red Deer Rebels

Crusaders hire new bench boss

Tim Fragle is the new coach of the Sherwood Park Crusaders AJHL hockey team.

The Sherwood Park Crusaders believe they have found the bench boss that’s going to take them to the elite ranks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, as they’ve hired Tim Fragle as their new head coach and general manager.

Two weeks ago, the junior A squad put the call out that they were looking for someone new to guide their hockey operations, after their board of directors decided not to renew the contract of Ross Kenny, who had been head coach and GM the last four seasons.

Over the past two weeks, the Cru received more than 30 applications from prospective coaches from across North America. But after several interviews and some final decision-making, the team decided to promote from within and hire Fragle, 30, who was Kenny’s assistant during the 2009-2010 season.

The new head coach grew up in Edmonton and played his bantam and midget triple-A rep hockey for the Canadian Athletic Club. He moved on to play two seasons of junior A with the (more…)
