Kevin Martin (Wikimedia Commons)
Kevin MartinĀ of Edmonton has found his third for the 2013-14 curling season and he’s chosen a former world champion as well, in Dave Nedohin.
Nedohin threw fourth stones for Randy Ferbey’s world championship curling team from Edmonton in 2002, 2003 and 2005.
Martin was in search of a third when John Morris left Martin’s team to join Jim Cotter. Martin has already qualified for the 2013 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials in Winnipeg while Cotter still has to qualify through a pre-trials event in Kitchener, Ontario in November. The winner of the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials will represent Canada in curling at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
The move by Martin came as a bit of a surprise to some because of the long rivalry between Martin and Ferbey.

John Morris (Anil Mungal, Wikimedia Commons)
Canadian Olympic gold medallist John Morris of Winnipeg, Manitoba is leaving Kevin Martin’s curlingĀ team only seven months prior to the Olympic Curling Trials in Winnipeg. The winner of the Olympic Trials tournament will represent Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
In a stunning announcement made on Friday, Morris stated the team was not living up to their capability and it was important that a fresh face join the Martin team.
Morris was on Martin’s gold medal winning curling team as a third at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Martin will now need to find a replacement. Possible curlers that could join the Martin rink are Dave Nedohin, who threw fourth stones for three-time world champion Randy Ferbey and Brad Gushue who won a gold medal for Canada at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin.

For the first time since 2004, Sweden has won the World Men’s Curling Championship. On Sunday night in Victoria, British Columbia, Niklas Edin defeated Sault Ste. Marie’s Brad Jacobs 8-6.
This was the first time since 2009 that Canada failed to win the World Championship gold medal.
The Swedes came out firing as they grabbed a quick 4-1 lead on Canada after three ends and basically went on cruise control thereafter.

Daniel Nestor (Wikimedia Commons)
This weekend is an extremely significant one when it comes to the history of Canadian tennis. Team Canada is tied 1-1 with Team Italy in the quarterfinals heading into a key doubles match today and two singles matches on Sunday.
This afternoon (Saturday, Sportsnet, 4:30 p.m., joined in progress) Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver will take on the Italian pair of Paolo Lorenzi and Daniele Braccaili. It will be interesting to see how much energy Pospisil has in the tank after he lost a five set marathon to Andreas Seppi on Friday afternoon. Canadian head coach Martin Laurendeau ridiculously went with Pospisil over Jesse Levine, who is overall a much better tennis player.
Sunday’s matches are right now Milos Raonic versus Seppi (Saturday, Sportsnet, 3:00 p.m.) followed by Pospisil versus Fabio Fognini.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Team Canada has dropped to 5-1 at the World Men’s Curling Championship in Victoria.
On Tuesday, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario’s Brad Jacobs lost 6-4 to Jiri Snitil of the Czech Republic.
A major reason for the major Czech Republic upset was the play of Snitil, who curled 90%. Snitil delivered some magnificent shots, including a game winning double takeout in the tenth end, to come away with the victory.

We’re coming to the second busiest sports month of the year. April. Where has March gone? I know.
Anyways. It is a huge weekend for the Edmonton Oilers as they will be hosting their two western Canadian foes– the Vancouver Canucks tonight (CBC, 8:00 p.m.) and the Calgary Flames on Easter Monday (Sportsnet, 7:30 p.m.).
With 15 games left on the schedule, the Oilers are three points back of the St. Louis Blues for a playoff spot. That means every five games, they will have to pick up a point on the Blues, and hope they are slightly better than three other teams that are in front of them– the Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Eve Muirhead (Wikimedia Commons)
For the sixth time in six years a different country has won the Women’s World Curling Championship.
On Sunday morning in Riga, Latvia, Eve Muirhead of Perth, Scotland became the youngest skip in curling history to win a Women’s World Curling Championship as Scotland defeated Sweden 6-5.
Muirhead, at 22 years of age, passes Winnipeg’s Connie Laliberte, who was only 23 years of age when she skipped Canada to her first of two World Curling Championships in ironically Perth, Scotland in 1984.
The turning point in this game came in the fourth end as Swedish fourth player Maria Prytz ran into a guard and allowed Scotland to steal two points.
Canada, which has not won a Women’s World Curling Championship since Jennifer Jones’ championship in 2008, came away with the bronze medal. Ottawa’s Rachel Homan lost in the tenth end 8-7 to Scotland in Saturday’s semi-final when Muirhead stole a point and then rebounded to beat the United States 8-6 in the bronze medal game.

After a respectable week, Team Canada finished the round robin in the Women’s World Curling Championship with a respectable 8-3 record. However, the three teams they lost to in the round robin (the United States, Scotland and Sweden) will be the three teams they will need to beat to win their first Women’s World Curling Championship since 2008.
Ontario’s Rachel Homan’s first test will be the United States (Saturday, 6:00 a.m.). If they win that game, they will have to play Scotland in the semi-final (Saturday, 11:00 a.m.) and then Sweden in the final (Sunday, 6:00 a.m.).

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (David Carmichael, Wikimedia Commons)
The 2013 World Figure Skating Championships wrap up in London, Ontario today with the ice dance competition (CBC, 2:00 p.m.) an the ladies’ long program (www.cbcsports.ca, 8:00 p.m.).
Canada has a very good shot at two more medals Saturday. Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of London, Ontario are in second place in the ice dance, while Sherwood Park resident Kaetlyn Osmond is in fourth place after the women’s short program.
If you watched the championship on Friday, you would know that the quality of skating has been poor for a World Figure Skating Championship.
Patrick Chan of Ottawa was completely dreadful last night in winning the men’s competition, but came away with the gold medal. After a great start where he executed the quad, he fell on two triples, double footed another jump and seemed exhausted in the latter half of his performance. At the end of the day, Chan defended his world title.

The Canadian curling scene has a new superstar. Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was overpowering on Sunday in his Brier semi-final win over Ontario’s Glenn Howard and then in the Brier final over Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg.
Jacobs, along with third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and his brother Ryan Harnden, the lead, are the new kids on the block when it comes to Canadian curling. On Sunday when they defeated Stoughton convincingly 11-4 in Edmonton, the Jacobs team became the first team from Northern Ontario to win the Brier since Al Hackner in 1985.
What was so impressive about Jacobs’ team was that they seemed very mature for their age and that they were effectively able to play very consistent, and minimize their errors.
It was Howard and Stoughton that were making the errors on Sunday. Jacobs got the better of Howard, his provincial rival in a 9-7 semi-final win Sunday morning and then put the pressure on Stoughton significantly Sunday night.

Friday can be summed up in one word for Canadian baseball. Embarrassing. Team Canada’s pitching deserved a failing grade in a 14-4 loss to Italy. With the loss, Canada’s hopes are all but dashed as it is highly unlikely they will advance to the second round.
How bad was it for Team Canada? Well, the ten run mercy rule came into effect after Canada gave up five runs in the eighth.

Glenn Howard (Wikimedia Commons)
The big story at the 2013 Tim Horton’s Brier is the fact that the local fan favourite Kevin Martin of Edmonton is still 3-4 heading into Thursday’s action.
The fact that Martin is struggling doesn’t seem to bother defending Tim Horton’s Brier champion Glenn Howard of Ontario however. Howard, the 2012 World Champion, continued his unbeaten streak Wednesday night in the Alberta capital when he clobbered James Grattan of New Brunswick 7-3. Oh yeah, the same Grattan who had a miraculous tenth end tick shot to beat Martin 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon.
In Howard’s seven consecutive wins to date, he has outscored his opponents 55-26. However curling at a national championship is also about momentum and peaking at the right time. Remember Jennifer Jones was perfect during the round robin at the 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kingston, but struggled in the playoffs to Ontario’s Rachel Homan.
Alberta curling fans would love nothing more than to see Martin beat Howard in some meaningful games on the weekend.

An Olympic champion is in first place at the Tim Horton’s Brier in Edmonton. However, many expected it to be Edmonton’s Kevin Martin, the 2010 Olympic Winter Games champion to be undefeated after day three of the Canadian Men’s National Curling Championship.
But it is Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue, the 2006 Olympic Winter Games champion, who is one of two undefeated teams so far, and the only team at 5-0. Gushue, last night defeated Northern Ontario 9-8 in an extra end against another previously undefeated team.
