The Halifax Mooseheads are the 2013 Memorial Cup champions.

On Sunday evening, the Mooseheads defeated the Portland Winterhawks 6-4 in a game that was an offensive explosion for both teams.

Memorial Cup tournament most valuable player Nathan MacKinnon recorded three goals and two assists, while his teammate Jonathan Drouin, the Canadian Hockey League Most Valuable Player award winner, registered five assists.

The game had 86 shots on net, with Portland outshooting Halifax 44-42.

This was the second time in the tournament that MacKinnon registered a hat trick against the Winterhawks. He also had three goals in Halfax’s 7-4 win over Portland during round robin play last Saturday.

This is the biggest weekend for the year in auto racing, soccer and junor hockey.

In soccer, Borussia Dortmund will play Bayern Munich in the championship of the UEFA Champions League today in London. It marks the first time ever that two teams from Germany will be playing for the championship.

Borussia Dortmund is led by Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who scored four goals in one game in Borussia Dortmund’s 4-1 win over Real Madrid in the semi-final. Bayern Munich meanwhile is led by midfielders Franck Ribery of France and Arjen Robben of the Netherlands, who have plenty of big game experience. The game can be seen on FOX at 12:45 p.m.

On Sunday, the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place with American Ed Carpenter on the pole. Carpenter has prior success at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as he won an Indy Lights race in Indianapolis in 2003. Mooseheads clobber Knights at the Memorial Cup

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

The Halifax Mooseheads are looking more and more like the team to beat at the 2013 Mastercard Memorial Cup. All they basically need is a day of rest in between games, something they will receive throughout the rest of the tournament.

On Tuesday evening, Martin Frk, probably the greatest hockey player ever without a vowel in his last name, registered three goals and an assist as the Mooseheads gave a beat down to the London Knights in a 9-2 win.

In beating the Knights by a converted touchdown last night in Saskatoon, the Mooseheads improve to 2-1 for the week and have clinched a spot in at least the semi-final.

If Portland defeats Saskatoon tonight, the Mooseheads will finish first and go directly to the final Sunday night. However if the Blades beat the Winterhawks, Saskatoon will finish in first place, in what many would consider a major surprise for the round robin portion of the tournament.

Memorial Cup continues to be very competitive

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

For the second consecutive year all four teams in the Memorial Cup have identical records after the fourth day of competition.

On Monday night in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Airdrie raised Ty Rattie, the top prospect of the St. Louis Blues, registered a three point night (two goals and one assist) as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the London Knights 6-3.

It was also a great evening for three Winterhawk players defensively. Defencemen Seth Jones who is projected to be drafted first overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Calgary Flames prospect Tyler Wotherspoon and left winger Taylor Leier all were a +4.

Blades deliver surprise at Memorial Cup

Monday, May 20th, 2013

We have our first significant surprise at the 2013 Memorial Cup. Just when you thought that the Halifax Mooseheads would be the class of the field at the annual national major junior hockey championship, they looked like a team that was playing their second game of a back-to-back on Sunday night.

Sunday was a time for the host crowd of Saskatoon to cheer, as the Saskatoon Blades defeated the Mooseheads 5-2. It was their first win since beating the Edmonton Oil Kings in a shootout on March 12 and their first regulation win since beating the Medicine Hat Tigers 6-3 on March 8. Interestingly, it was the Tigers that swept the Blades in the first round of the 2013  WHL playoffs.

Bandits win RBC Cup Sunday

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

The Brooks Bandits have won the RBC Cup on Sunday, marking the first time since 2001 the champion came from the province of Alberta.

The Bandits defeated the Summerside Western Capitals 3-1 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island to win the Canadian Junior Hockey League national championship.

It was simply a magical year for Brooks, who only lost four regulation games in 60 Alberta Junior Hockey League regular season games this season.

Brooks won the AJHL Gas Drive Cup Final over the Spruce Grove Saints before losing the 2013 Western Canada Cup to the Surrey Eagles. Then this week at the RBC Cup, the Bandits only loss came to the Capitals in round robin play where they lost 3-1 on Tuesday.

MacKinnon has defining night for Mooseheads

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

Memorial Cup (Wikimedia Commons)

Over the last few months there hasn’t been a lot to separate the top three prospects in the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The consensus has been that defenceman Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks would be drafted number one, followed by Halifax Mooseheads forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin.

Last night in Saskatoon during the Memorial Cup, was actually a scout’s dream, as the top three prospects were on the ice together at once.

And the player that shoned the most was MacKinnon. The native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia (ironically the same as NHL superstar Sidney Crosby) registered three goals and an assist in a convincing 7-4 Halifax win over Portland in the first game of the Memorial Cup for both teams.

It was the second straight night that a WHL team lost as the Saskatoon Blades lost 3-2 to the London Knights in the opening game of the tournment on Friday.

No triple crown winner in 2013

Saturday, May 18th, 2013

Preakness Stakes (Wikimedia Commons)

Once again we will have to wait another year to see if a horse will win the Triple Crown.

On Saturday at the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, Maryland,  Oxbow upset the heavy favourite and Kentucky Derby winner Orb.

Affirmed will remain the last horse to win the Triple Crown, as it accomplished the feat in 1978.

Orb meanwhile finished in third place at the Preakness Stakes. Like the Kentucky Derby, Orb got off to a slow start, but at the Preakness today got boxed in and could not find the open space required to make a move.

Victoria Day Weekend Sports Preview–May 18-20–NHL, NBA, MLB, Horse Racing & World Hockey Championships

Sidney Crosby (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)

Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all-time. Heck, he is also the greatest athlete of all-time. But I think it is safe to say that right now Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the best hockey player in the world right now.

On Friday night, Crosby showed just why he is so great. In a dominating performance, Crosby had a hat trick by the early portion of the second period in a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in game two of the Eastern Conference semi-final that put the Penguins up 2-0 in the best-out-of-seven series.

Crosby will now have the opportunity to showcase his skills north of the border this weekend as Pittsburgh travels to Ottawa for game three of the Eastern Conference semi-final (Sunday, CBC, 5:30 p.m.). I know the Penguins are loaded with talent that includes Evgeni Malkin and Jarome Iginla, but the bottom line is when healthy Pittsburgh is Crosby’s team.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Saturday–MLB–New York Mets @ Chicago Cubs–WPIX–11:00 a.m.–Two teams in fourth place in their divisions play today at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are 17-24 in the National League Central, while the Mets are 16-23 in the National League East. First baseman Anthony Rizzo, who represented Italy at the World Baseball Classic, with nine home runs, 29 runs batted in and a .522 slugging percentage. While so far this season, the Mets have been led by third baseman David Wright, who leads the team with a .312 batting average, .418 on base percentage and a .536 slugging percentage.

Oil Kings eliminated by Winterhawks in WHL Playoffs

Monday, May 13th, 2013

Ty Rattie (Tricia Hall, Wikimedia Commons)

The Edmonton Oil Kings season came to an end on Sunday afternoon.

Winterhawks forward Ty Rattie of Airdie, Alberta had a game for the ages. Rattie scored two shorthanded goals on the same Edmonton four minute power play in the first period as Portland defeated Edmonton 5-1 to win the Western Hockey League Championship 4-2.

Rattie, a top prospect with the St. Louis Blues, finished the game with a hat trick and was a +3.

A major reason for the Edmonton loss was their abysmal power play, which was horrible throughout the series. On Sunday, it was the Winterhawks that had the better scoring opportunities a man down.

Another thing that was horrible on Sunday was the attendance at Rexall Place. Only 7,449 fans attended the game. There was a large number of empty seats in the lower bowl. Dan Russell of Shaw Cable accurately compared Rexall Place to a library.

Weekend Sports Preview–May 11-12–NHL, WHL, World Hockey Championship & PGA

Henrik Zetterberg (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

One of the most exciting times in the world of sports is simply game seven. That’s what we’ll have Sunday night in southern California as the Anaheim Ducks host the Detroit Red Wings.

Last night, Red Wings’ captain Henrik Zetterberg scored at 1:04 of overtime to give the Red Wings a 4-3 win over the Ducks to tie their Western Conference quarterfinal series at three games apiece.

The Red Wings might have a strong core of veterans, but after all these years are still getting it done. Goaltender Jimmy Howard is playing at an elite level as Detroit will look to move on during their last year in the Western Conference. How dangerous will Detrot be next year in the East? The answer is very. The game will be seen Sunday night on TSN at 8:00 p.m.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday & Sunday– PGA–Players Championship–NBC–12 p.m.– Spain’s Sergio Garcia, probably one of the best golfers in the world to have never won a major, currently leads Tiger Woods by a stroke after shooting a -11 at Sawgrass over the first two days of competition. Garcia and Woods have won the Players Championship once before– Woods in 2001 and Garcia in 2008. As for the first round leader, American Roberto Castro, he went from -9 to -3 and 1st to 30th after shooting a 78 on Friday.
