Hesjedal withdraws from Giro d’Italia

Friday, May 17th, 2013

Ryder Hesjedal (Luca Volpi, Wikimedia Commons)

Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria will not repeat as the Giro d’Italia champion.

On Friday, Hesjedal made the decision to pull out of the race after falling to 37th place. Hesjedal was 183rd in Thursday’s stage.

It seems that Hesjedal is simply not feeling well. He cited “a deteriorating physical decision”, according to the Canadian Press, as the major reason why he decided to pull out of this marathon cycling race.

Hesjedal actually dropped 34 places in only one week as he was third last week.

Another top cyclist who has pulled out is Bradley Wiggins of Great Britain because of a chest infection. Wiggins is the 2012 Olympic Gold medallist in the time trial and is the 2010 Tour de France champion. Wiggins also has great success in track cycling as he won a Gold medal in the team pursuit at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and won the Gold medal in the individual pursuit at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Edmonton to host Canadian National Women’s Basketball Team

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

The Canadian National Women’s Basketball team is in the process of moving from Etobicoke, Ontario to Edmonton.

In an announcement made on Wednesday, the Canadian team will train out of the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton. The city of Edmonton is also supporting the move, as they are supplying $500,000.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, team Canada finished with a record of 2-3 in the round robin before losing to the United States in the quarterfinals. The Canadians beat Brazil and the host team from Great Britain.

The city of Edmonton has a rich history when it comes to women’s basketball. From 1915-1940, the Edmonton Grads were considered one of the finest women’s basketball teams in the world. They represented Canada and won four consecutive Olympic Gold medals from 1924-1936 while women’s basketball was a demonstration sport.

The Grads’ top player, Noel MacDonald, and their coach, Percy Page, are in Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

These are simply not your Daddy’s San Antonio Spurs

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

When you think of the San Antonio Spurs, you think of great defense. Well, overtime things change and the San Antonio Spurs are no longer just a great defensive team. Monday night was a great example, as the Spurs defeated the Golden State Warriors 129-127 in game one of the Western Conference semi-final.

Sure the game did go into double overtime, but a decade ago, it was more common to see the Spurs win easily by only posting double digits in total points.

Weekend Sports Preview–April 6 & 7–Davis Cup, NHL, NBA, MLB, World Men’s Curling Championship, March Madness,

Daniel Nestor (Wikimedia Commons)

This weekend is an extremely significant one when it comes to the history of Canadian tennis. Team Canada is tied 1-1 with Team Italy in the quarterfinals heading into a key doubles match today and two singles matches on Sunday.

This afternoon (Saturday, Sportsnet, 4:30 p.m., joined in progress) Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver will take on the Italian pair of Paolo Lorenzi and Daniele Braccaili. It will be interesting to see how much energy Pospisil has in the tank after he lost a five set marathon to Andreas Seppi on Friday afternoon. Canadian head coach Martin Laurendeau ridiculously went with Pospisil over Jesse Levine, who is overall a much better tennis player.

Sunday’s matches are right now Milos Raonic versus Seppi (Saturday, Sportsnet, 3:00 p.m.) followed by Pospisil versus Fabio Fognini.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Could this be a breakout year for Hinchcliffe?

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

James Hinchcliffe (Chuck Carroll, Wikimedia Commons)

The last couple of years James Hinchcliffe has been on the brink of greatness. He has steadily improved in the auto racing world and seen himself steadily climb in his efforts of being the next one.  Over the last couple of decades, Canada has seen outstanding results in IndyCar as Jacques Villeneuve and Paul Tracy have performed admirably, and Canadian auto racing fans were waiting for Hinchcliffe to finally shine.

However questions remained how long it would take for Hinchcliffe to be near the conversation. I guess that time is now.

On Sunday, Hinchcliffe became the first Canadian since Tracy in 2007 to win an IndyCar race. The pride of Oakville, Ontario won in the neon coloured Go Daddy race car that Danica Patrick has made famous by winning IndyCar’s opening race of 2013 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He did it by passing legend Helio Castroneves and put himself in the position to be a force to be reckoned with.

Weekend Sports Preview–March 9 & 10–World Baseball Classic, Brier, NHL, NBA & PGA

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Friday can be summed up in one word for Canadian baseball. Embarrassing. Team Canada’s pitching deserved a failing grade in a 14-4 loss to Italy. With the loss, Canada’s hopes are all but dashed as it is highly unlikely they will advance to the second round.

How bad was it for Team Canada? Well, the ten run mercy rule came into effect after Canada gave up five runs in the eighth.

Avalanche decide to keep O’Reilly

Friday, March 1st, 2013

Ryan O’Reilly (Wikimedia Commons)

In a  bizarre turn of events on Thursday, the Calgary Flames offered restricted free agent Ryan O’Reilly, the Colorado Avalanche holdout, a two year contract worth $10 million.

The decision came just hours prior to the Flames game against the Avalanche in Denver last night. Then during the first period, just moments after the Flames jumped to a quick 2-0 lead on the Avalanche, it was announced that Colorado was going to match the Flames generous contract offer to O’Reilly.

Is O’Reilly an up and coming centerman? Possibly. But at the end of the day I think Flames General Manager Jay Feaster should be relieved most of his roster is status quo since yesterday. If the Flames did acquire the rights to O’Reilly, they would have had to give the Avalanche their first and third round picks, something that might have been very steep if the Flames don’t make a strong push soon.

Ravens & 49ers to play in Super Bowl

Sunday, January 20th, 2013

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers will be playing in the Super Bowl two weeks from now in New Orleans.

On Sunday, the Ravens defeated the New England Patriots 28-13 in the AFC Championship and the 49ers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 in the NFC Championship.

With the Ravens and 49ers playing in the Super Bowl, it will mean that brothers will be coaching against each other with John Harbaugh coaching Baltimore and Jim Harbaugh coaching San Francisco.

In the AFC Championship, a major story surrounded the tight ends. The Patriots had a tough time stopping Dennis Pitta in a key Raven drive early in the third quarter. Even though Aaron Hernandez had a respectable day, having nine catches for 83 yards, it was clear the team missed Rob Gronkowski.

Griffin Reinhart suspended four games at World Juniors

Friday, January 4th, 2013

In one of the most controversial decisions in the history of the World Junior Hockey Championships, Edmonton Oil King defenceman Griffin Reinhart of Team Canada has been suspended four games for high-sticking American Vincent Trocheck in Thursday’s semi-final game– a 5-1 American win.

Reinhart only received a two minute minor penalty for the infraction and the IIHF decision has left Hockey Canada incensed.

Team Canada Senior Director of Hockey Operations Scott Salmond said “that’s the harshest suspension in the history of the event.”

Neate Sager of Yahoo! Sports has said that the International Ice Hockey Federation should change his name to the International Inconsistency in Hockey Fouls.
