Weekend Sports Preview–NFL, World Junior Hockey Championship Final, NBA & PGA

Friday, January 4th, 2013

Russell Wilson (Larry Maurer, Wikimedia Commons)

It’s wildcard weekend in the National Football League with four entertaining games. The one I think everyone is excited about the most will take place Sunday afternoon as the Washington Redskins take on the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC (FOX, 2:30 p.m.).

This is also a battle of two rookie quarterbacks with Russell Wilson of Seattle taking on Washington’s RG3. A lot of people are surprised Seattle is a three point favourite. I’m not, based on how well the Seahawks have played throughout December. However, don’t forget the Seahawks had a losing record on the road this season, and are much more comfortable in the Pacific Northwest.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Saturday–World Junior Hockey Championship Final–Sweden vs. United States–TSN–6:00 a.m.–The 2013 Championship Final has two strong Calgary connections. The top American player, John Gaudreau,  forward from Boston College, is a draft pick of the Calgary Flames (4th round in 2011) and one of Sweden’s top snipers is Victor Rask of the Calgary Hitmen. The American defense as a collective unit is exceptional. Seth Jones, Jacob Trouba and  Jake McCabe have been excellent in the medal round in wins over the Czech Republic and Canada.

Weekend Sports Preview–December 8-9–NFL

Sunday, December 9th, 2012

Ben Roethlisberger (Wikimedia Commons)

Well folks. We are now in the down time of the sports calendar a little bit. My apologies for not writing with a high frequency this past week. I am currently doing a massive project for Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame which has taken up every ounce of energy I have had.

But I’m watching football today because I’m in the quarterfinals of my fantasy football playoffs, the premier fantasy football pool in Calgary.  Here are the games I’ll be watching:

Sunday–NFL–San Diego Chargers @ Pittsburgh Steelers–CBS–11am–Big Ben is back in the lineup for the Steelers after a shoulder and a rib injury. At 7-5, the Steelers delivered an impressive road win last week in Baltimore. As for the Chargers, there were reports this week that Norv Turner would be fired with the team currently at 4-8.

Sunday–NFL–Dallas Cowboys @ Cincinnati Bengals–FOX–11am–The Cowboys received a tragedy this week as linebacker Jerry Brown died in a car accident. Defensive lineman Josh Brent was charged with intoxicated manslaughter. The Cowboys  are 6-6, while the Bengals are 7-5.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 3 & 4–NFL, CIS, NCAA, NBA, World Golf Championship

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

The most dominant football team in Alberta is not in the Canadian Football League, but in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. On Saturday night at McMahon Stadium, the University of Calgary Dinos (7-1) will host the University of Manitoba in the Hardy Cup semi-final (Saturday, SHAW TV, 5pm).

Quarterback Eric Dzwilewski of Boise, Idaho set a Canada West Conference record with a 70.6 completion percentage, and helped set team records for most points, touchdowns, first downs, passing yards, completions and total yards of offense in 2012.

Rodgers named NFL MVP

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Aaron Rodgers (Bing Images)

Last night in the Super Bowl, festivities, the National Football League had an event that simulated something that has taken place in the Canadian Football League for years– an awards show immediately prior to the Championship game.

On Saturday, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers was named NFL MVP. Rodgers won 48 of a possible 50 votes. The Packer quarterback led Green Bay to a 15-1 regular season record and led all quarterbacks with a 122.5 quarterback rating.

Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints was named the top offensive player. Brees set the NFL record this past season with 5476 passing yards and also led the NFL with 46 touchdown passes.

Other award winners were Terrell Suggs of the Baltimore Ravens for top defensive player, Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matt Stafford for comeback player of the year, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh won Coach of the Year, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for NFL Offensive  Rookie of the Year and Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Weekend Sports Preview–January 14 & 15–NFL Playoffs, Australian Open, PGA, NBA & NHL

Tom Brady (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

We are down to eight teams left now in the National Football League.

In the AFC, the New England Patriots (13-3) will host the Denver Broncos (8-8) this evening (CBS, 6pm) in the most anticipated game of the weekend.

Tebownmania is larger now than it ever has, and possibly ever will be. But the bottom line is how many championships in the NFL has Tim Tebow won? The answer is zero and he will be up against a quarterback that has won three Super Bowls, is a two-time MVP and is a seven-time Pro Bowler in Tom Brady. And oh yes, the Patriots hammered the Broncos 41-23 in Denver on December 18, as Brady threw for 320 yards, including 129 yards to underrated tight end Aaron Hernandez. I’m picking New England in a rout.

Christmas Sports Weekend–NHL, NFL, NBA & World Juniors

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

It may be the Christmas season, but it is a very big weekend on the world sport stage. On Boxing Day, the sports world will be focused on Alberta for the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship. The event is significant because it is the first time that Edmonton and Calgary, two bitter provincial rivals have joined forces to host a world class sporting event. Edmonton will host all of Team Canada’s round robin games, with Calgary hosting the medal round.

Team Canada’s first game is Monday at 1:30pm against Finland (TSN). Both teams have something in common. They both lost to Russia in the medal round at the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championships in Buffalo. Finland lost 4-3 to Russia in the quarterfinals, while Canada lost 5-3 to Russia in the Gold medal game.

Week 13 NFL Picks

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Tim Tebow (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)

Hopefully week 13 is lucky for me instead of unlucky. Last week I was 12-4 and am 118-58 on the year.

Here are my week 13 picks:

Thursday:

Philadelphia over Seattle–I know the Eagles will be without Maclin and Vick, but their second stringers are still better than the Seahawks.

Sunday 11am

Denver over Minnesota–The Broncos are performing high with Tim Tebow. I’m on the Tebow bandwagon for a week.

Buffalo over Tennessee–The Bills seem to have thins on track after a solid performance against the Jets despite a four point loss.

New England over Indianapolis–This game should be over by 11:30.

Miami over Oakland–In an upset, the Dolphins almost beat the Cowboys on the road and are playing great football. Cameron Wake could be productive in stopping the Raider rushing game.

Week 12 NFL Notes

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Sebastian Janikowski (Wikimedia Commons)

There were four major games I paid close attention to this past weekend.

The New Orleans Saints as a collective unit were the most impressive team as they defeated the New York Giants 49-24. Drew Brees threw for 363 yards and four touchdowns, as the Saints improved to 8-4 and a one game lead over the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South. New York meanwhile dropped to 6-5. The one area for the Saints that needs to improve is their defensive pass coverage. Eli Manning threw for 406 yards, with 157 yards to Victor Cruz. Once the playoffs start, New Orleans and Green Bay need to do better in those two areas.

The Packers continued their unbeaten string now at 11-0 with a 27-15 win in Detroit on American Thanksgiving. Like Brees, Aaron Rodgers threw for over 300 yards with 307 in the victory. The Packers passing game was great, but their running game was not as they only rushed for 53 total yards on 18 carries. Green Bay now has a four game lead on 7-4 Chicago and 7-4 Detroit in the NFC North.

The other key American Thanksgiving game was in Baltimore where the Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 16-6. The Ravens improved to 8-3, while the 49ers dropped to 9-2. This was an intriguing matchup as the head coaches in the game were brothers. John Harbaugh coaches the Ravens and Jim Harbaugh coaches the 49ers.

Also on Sunday, the Oakland Raiders continued their lead in the AFC West with a 25-20 win over the Chicago Bears. It was the Sebastian Janikowski show as he kicked six field goals in Oakland’s win, who improved to 7-4.

Week 9 NFL Notes

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Matt Moore (Greg Keene, Wikimedia Commons)

The biggest surprise from the weekend came from the Miami Dolphins who absolutely hammered the Kansas City Chiefs 31-3. I don’t think anybody who follows the NFL expected a tropical Florida crush in the heart of Missouri, especially after the Chiefs were impressive the previous week in defeating the San Diego Chargers 23-20 in overtime. Quarterback Matt Moore had his finest game of the season, as he threw for three touchdown passes, 244 yards and a quarterback rating of 147.5.

The Dolphins won their first game of the year (1-7), and with all of the talk that Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden taking over from Tony Sparano, it looks like Sparano has saved his job for another week. The Chiefs meanwhile fell to 4-4.

But week nine was about the marquee matchups.

If you liked offense, the Green Bay Packers continued their unbeaten run (8-0) in defeating the San Diego Chargers 45-38, in a game where both teams combined for 83 points. Aaron Rodgers had four touchdowns, and threw for 247 yards, including 105 to Jordy Nelson. Even though Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers (4-4) had four touchdowns himself and 385 yards passing, he had three interceptions to Rodgers’ zero.

There were also some very interesting defensive battles Sunday.

Weekend Sports Preview–MLB Playoffs, NHL, NFL, CFL–October 15-16, 2011

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

Devan Dubnyk (Barry Gutierrez, Associated Press)

Heading into the weekend, there is one particular statistic that stands out to me over all the others.

After eight days in the NHL’s regular season, the Edmonton Oilers are tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the fewest goals allowed in the entire league! That’s right folks, the Oilers and Red Wings have only disallowed three goals each.

Oilers’ goaltenders Devan Dubnyk and Nikolai Khabibulin have actually only given up two regulation goals between them. Dubnyk gave up a softy to Kris Letang in the Oilers’ 2-1 shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, while Khabibulin gave up a regulation goal to Matt Cullen in Edmonton’s 2-1 shootout loss to Minnesota on Thursday.

On Saturday night, the Oilers will entertain the Vancouver Canucks at Rexall Place. They will have a tough time containing Daniel and Henrik Sedin though, who have combined for 114 points in 123 games in their career versus the Oilers. Game time is 8pm and can be seen on CBC.

Thanksgiving Weekend Sports Preview–NHL, NFL, MLB, CFL

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

Finally, the National Hockey League in Winnipeg returns this weekend as the Jets host the Montreal Canadiens at the MTS Center (Sunday, CBC, 3PM). When the Phoenix Coyotes moved to Winnipeg on July 1, 1996, Manitoba sports fans have been circling this date on their calendar. Fifteen years later and they finally have their wish. Players that will become household Jets’ names will include Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane.

The Canadiens (0-1) meanwhile got off to a slow start as they lost 2-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre. James Reimer was brilliant in posting a shutout.

Week 4 NFL Notes

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Calvin Johnson (Dave Hogg, Wikimedia Commons)

An interesting trend in the NFL season to date has been the amazing comebacks.

In week two the Tampa Bay Buccaneers overcame a 17-0 deficit to beat the Minnesota Vikings 24-20. The Buffalo Bills were down 21-3 in week two to beat the Oakland Raiders 38-35, and then overcame a 21-0 deficit to beat the New England Patriots 34-31 in week three.

Yesterday the trend continued as the Detroit Lions overcame a 27-3 deficit in the third quarter to beat the Dallas Cowboys 34-30. Lions’ wide receiver Calvin Johnson came up huge with 96 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the Detroit win.

The Lions, along with the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers are the only teams left this season who are undefeated. And yes, they’re both in the NFC North, and will play each other twice–American Thanksgiving Day (November 24) in Detroit and New Year’s Day (January 1) in Green Bay. On Sunday, Aaron Rodgers had four touchdown passes for 408 yards and then ran for two more touchdowns on 36 yards in a 49-23 win over Denver.

The strangest game of the day was the Sunday nighter when the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Jets 34-17. Four of the touchdowns in the game came from the teams’ defense– two directly on Mark Sanchez fumbles and another on a Mark Sanchez interception. Is it me or do you think Sanchez is the most overrated quarterback in the NFL?

Random Friday Thoughts: NFL’s Return, Pacquiao Promotions, Worst PK Ever

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Welcome Back NFL!

Ten touchdowns, 876 yards of total offence and a goal line stand in the final seconds.

What a start to the 2011 NFL season…and to think, we almost missed out on it because of a silly little contract dispute! If you missed Thursday night’s opener between the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints, a 42-34 win for the reigning Super Bowl champs, I hope you at least saw the highlights.

There were four touchdowns in the first quarter alone, a punt returned 72 yards for a touchdown in the second, a 108-yard kickoff return for a TD in the third and on a night of all-out offence, it came down to a huge defensive play to close it out right at the end.

What a game! (After the Jump: Pacqueoke & the Worst Penalty Kick EVER!) (more…)

Super Bowl Recap

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Christina Aguliera (Nick Stepowyj, Wikimedia Commons)

Well the Super Bowl is officially in the books. I was at Kilkenny’s Irish Pub last night in Northwest Calgary, and had a good time indeed. I won two Flames tickets to an upcoming game next month against the Phoenix Coyotes and a San Diego Chargers hat for getting their trivia question right.

The game itself was extremely interesting– and for the fifth year in a row an excellent battle that went down to the wire.

Green Bay won 31-25 over the Pittsburgh Steelers. I was right in the fact that Green Bay would win by six. I was just four points out on each side.

A major reason why Green Bay won was turnovers. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was intercepted twice and running back Rashard Mendenhall fumbled. The Steelers’ mistakes led to three Green Bay major scores– two touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers to Greg Jennings and an interception return for a touchdown by Packers’ safety Nick Collins.
