Hadwin could have a big week

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

It is extremely difficult to predict the performance of a golfer every week. A lot of different factors come into play.

I am in a fantasy golf pool, and I won’t share all of my secrets, but a major factor that comes into play in determining certain golfers is consistency on the weekend. The missed cut category has great significance.

I know Abbotsford, British Columbia’s Adam Hadwin has only played in two PGA events in 2011, the RBC Canadian Open at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver last week, and the United States Open at Congressional Country Club outside of Washington, D.C. last month. But the bottom line is that he has played all 72 holes in the two tournaments he has been in this year, and performed admirably in a tie for 58th in D.C. and a tie for for fourth in B.C. Both results made Hadwin the top Canadian.

I’m taking a hunch and selecting him this week along with Americans Phil Mickelson, Webb Simpson and Jeff Overton.

O’Hair defeats Blanks in a playoff at Canadian Open

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Sean O'Hair (Stan Badz, PGA Tour)

It wasn’t great golf in the playoff at the RBC Canadian Open at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver on Sunday, but the bottom line is that American Sean O’Hair knocked off fellow American Kris Blanks in a playoff.

O’Hair got a bogey and Blanks had a double bogey on the 18th hole after they were tied after 72 holes at -4.

Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, British Columbia was tied for fourth with Australian Geoff Ogilvy at -2. Argentina’s Andres Romero finished all alone in third place at -3.

For O’Hair it was his fourth career win on the PGA Tour.

By finishing fourth, Hadwin won $228,800, and qualified for this weekend’s $6 million Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.

But what Hadwin was able to accomplish this weekend was respect. He allowed the Canadian golf fan to realize that there are up and coming stars on the Canadian golf scene after Mike Weir and Stephen Ames. Hadwin gave us a glimpse of his abilities this week. He also showed his personality. Does he get down on himself? Sure he does, and his ability to talk to himself expressively on the tee in a “G” rated fashion, I think brought himself closer to the everyday Canadian golfer that has played this frustrating game.

Hadwin one shot back at Canadian Open

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Adam Hadwin (Harry How, Getty Images)

Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, British Columbia is in excellent position to end a Canadian drought that has lasted since 1954.

Hadwin (-4) is only shot back of American Bo Van Pelt (-5) after the third round of the RBC Canadian Open at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver. No Canadian has won the Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher won in 1954 and no Canadian born golfer has won the Canadian Open since Karl Keffer of Tottenham, Ontario in 1914.

Hadwin, 23, was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and raised just outside of Vancouver.

But Hadwin is not the only golfer making significant noise this weekend. Fan favourite John Daly, who has not won on the PGA Tour since 2004, but has a PGA Championship and British Open title attached to his name, is at -2 and is tied for fifth place with former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy of Australia. Daly has battled drug, alcohol, and gambling addictions throughout his life, but is a fan favourite wherever he goes. In round two, he had pants with the red Canadian maple leaf all over them.

Weekend Sports Preview–July 23-24–Edmonton Indy, RBC Canadian Golf Open, Stamps & Esks, MLB, Senior British Golf Open

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Tony Kanaan (Wikimedia Commons)

Over the last two years, some of the most interesting IndyCar races have happened in Edmonton. Two years ago, Brazilian Tony Kanaan suffered first and second degree burns to his body when a splash of fuel got into his cockpit and ignited him and his car.

Then last year, Brazilian Helio Castroneves, who was the leader after 92 laps, was black flagged for blocking on the restart and finished tenth. The eventual winner was New Zealand’s Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indianapolis 500 winner.

Fast forward to 2011, where Dario Franchitti of Scotland has been the driver so far on the IndyCar circuit. He won two weeks ago in Toronto, and has also won in St. Petersburg, Florida and Milwaukee. He leads Australian Will Power by 55 points.

Organizers have changed the layout of the 2011 Edmonton Indy, giving competitors more opportunities to pass.

The race starts Sunday at 12:45pm on TSN.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday & Sunday–10am–Senior British Open–TSN–I wasn’t go to watch this, but now I will. Rod Spittle of St. Catharines, Ontario is the co-leader with Americans Mark Calcavecchia and Lee Rinker. Spittle shot a -5 on Friday to tie for the lead at -7. The emergence of Spittle, 56 years of age, is remarkable because he never played on the PGA Tour. He won the Canadian Amateur in 1977 and 1978, but decided to sell insurance instead of turning professional. Now he is one of the world’s top senior golfers.

Domination by McIlroy continues

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Rory McIlroy (Bing Images)

Rory McIlroy is running away with the United States Open at the Congressional Golf Course near Washington, D.C.

McIlroy built his lead with a two under 68 Saturday to take an eight stroke lead (-14) on South Korean Y.E. Yang (-6).

It wasn’t a dominating performance by McIlroy on Saturday, rather a patient one. He recorded a par on 13 of the 18 holes he played, trying his best to minimize mistakes.

The lack of aggressiveness in my opinion showed great maturity, a characteristic McIlroy lacked a little during the final round at Augusta.

The best rounds of the day were put together by England’s Lee Westwood and Australia’s Jason Day. They both shot a -6, and moved into a tie for third place at -5 with American Robert Garrigus.

Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, British Columbia is the top Canadian at +6 (tied for 54th), while Calgary’s Wes Heffernan struggled on Saturday, shooting a 79, and is tied for 71st.

McIlroy shoots -6 in 1st round of US Open

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Rory McIlroy (Andrew Redington, Getty Images)

Rory McIlroy seems to have put a bad final round at the Masters behind him.

Today in the first round of the United States Open at the Congressional Golf Course near Washington, D.C., McIlroy became the first golfer at the U.S. Open in 35 years to take a three stroke lead after 18 holes when she shot a dazzling 6-under 65.

McIlroy, from Holywood, Northern Ireland, had a bogey-free round. He birdied the first, fourth, sixth, twelfth, seventeenth and eighteenth holes.

But the two golfers who are tied for second, are definitely very strong formidable opponents. Y.E. Yang of South Korea won the 2009 PGA Championship and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa won the Masters this past April. Both are -3.

Other notable names under par include defending British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa (-2), 2008 Canadian Open Champion Chez Reavie of the United States (-1), 2009 British Open Champion Stewart Cink of the United States (-1), 2010 U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland (-1) and 1997 PGA Champion Davis Love III of the United States.

Woods pulls out of the U.S. Open

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

Tiger Woods hasn’t played lately and won’t any time soon.

The 14-time major champion and three-time United States Open champion pulled out of next weekend’s major at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland with a sore leg.

It will be the first time Woods has missed the U.S. Open since 1994.
