Adam Scott (C.J. Stumpf, Wikimedia Commons)
For the first time ever an Australian has won the most prestigious golf tournament in the world. On Sunday, Australia’s Adam Scott won the Masters by beating the Argentinian grandfather, Angel Cabrera, the 2009 Masters champion, in a memorable playoff.
Scott beat Cabrera by successfully executing two outstanding birdie putts. He forced a playoff by recording a birdie on the 72nd hole and then executed another birdie putt on the second hole (17th hole) of the playoff.
However the 2013 Masters will once again center around Tiger Woods. Questions remain whether or not Woods should have been disqualified for playing the ball two yards back from its original lie on Friday. There have also been reports that organizers might have kept Woods in the tournament because it would have significantly improved ratings. Either way, Woods’s stature as the number one ranked golfer in the world, and the fame he brings to the game, probably made a significant difference in him being allowed to continue on the weekend.

On Monday evening I was talking with Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun, who is in Augusta, Georgia this week as a fan at the Masters.
Eric asked me who I thought was going to win because he thought he would put some money on someone. Without hesitation, I replied “Brandt Snedeker”.
Snedeker was brilliant on Saturday down the stretch. He finished up with three birdies in the last six holes in shooting a three-under 69. Snedker, who has won already this year at the historic AT& T Pebble Beach Pro-Am near San Francisco, will have to beat a two-time Major champion to prove my flawless accuracy.
That is because Angel Cabrera of Argentina is tied for the lead with Snedeker at -7. Others in contention for the first major championship of the season are a trio of Australians. Veteran Adam Scott is at -6, followed by Jason Day and Marc Leishman at -5. Matt Kuchar of the United States cannot be counted out as well at -4. Tiger Woods meanwhile is lurking at -3.

Dan Uggla (D.B. King, Wikimedia Commons)
One of the most remarkable comebacks in sports history happened on Friday night in Washington.
Down 9-0 after five innings, the Braves stormed back to outscore the Nationals 10-1 in the last four innings before winning 11-10 in extra innings.
Dan Uggla led the Braves attack by going three for four, scoring four runs and recording the game winning run in the eleventh inning.
With the win, the Braves improve to 51-41, and are 2.5 games back of the Nationals in the National League East. The two teams will also play a very intriguing doubleheader on Saturday (11am and 5pm on Peachtree TV).
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Brandt Snedeker of Nashville, Tennessee leads the British Open after 36 holes.
The two-time winner on the PGA tour currently leads Adam Scott of Australia at -10 with Tiger Woods also in the mix at -6.
Snedeker, who has played bogeyless golf over the first 36 holes, had six birdies today and was in a commanding lead when I woke up this morning.

Adam Scott (C.J. Stumpf, Wikimedia Commons)
Australia’s Adam Scott shot a -6 under perfect conditions after round one of the British Open in Lytham St. Annes, England on Thursday.
According to ESPN, organizers were expecting significantly more windier conditions than what transpired for the morning segment.
Pre-tournament favourite Tiger Woods called the conditions benign after he shot a three-under 67 and sits in a tie for sixth.
Scott, meanwhile leads Paul Lawrie of Scotland (1999 British Open champion), Zach Johnson of the United States (2007 Masters Champion) and Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium by a stroke.
I was surprised at how calm Scott was throughout his round. He even took the time to use the portaloo late in his round.
Another interesting story was that the British Open does not have U.S. Open Webb Simpson in the field because his wife is about to give birth. Simpson has confirmed his presence however at next week’s Canadian Open in beautiful Hamilton! I wonder if Simpson has ever been to Hamilton?

Bubba Watson (Carl Linderg, Wikimedia Commons)
One of golf’s most interesting and unique personalities walked away from Augusta Sunday with a green jacket.
American Bubba Watson, known for his creativity and personality, defeated former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff after shooting a 10-under par and then shooting par, par in a two hole playoff.
Watson’s win Sunday might however have been overshadowed a little by Oosthuizen’s remarkable double eagle on the second hole, becoming only the fourth player in Masters history to accomplish the feat, joining Gene Sarazen in 1935, Bruce Devlin in 1967 and Jeff Maggert in 1994.
Sunday also saw a pair of holes-in-one. One was hit by Adam Scott and the other by Bo Van Pelt, who shot an 8-under 64, tying the course record previously set by Maurice Bembridge (1974), Hale Irwin (1975), Gary Player (1978), Greg Norman (1988) and David Toms (1998).
In the end it was Bubba Watson’s day however. The native of Bagdad, Florida (not Iraq) has always thought he might have Attention Deficit Disorder, but has never had his individual suspicion checked by the medical community. A golfer who plays professionally with a possible mental disability is remarkable. A golfer who possibly has A.D.D. and wins the Masters is even more amazing.

Webb Simpson (Yahoo! Images)
While most sports news outlets are discussing Adam Scott’s blowout victory with K.J. Choi over Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker, I am taking this blog into a different direction.
The Americans, except for Woods and Stricker, played almost flawlessly on Wednesday night taking a 4-2 lead over the International squad after Day One of the President’s Cup in Melbourne, Australia.
In last night’s foursome play, the one American golfer I was impressed with the most was Webb Simpson, who is starting to become a household name in the sport. He teamed up with Bubba Watson and surprisingly took out Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa 4 & 2.
If you haven’t heard of Simpson, it is now time. The 26 year-old native of Raleigh, North Carolina finished second on the PGA Tour money list last season after winning the Wyndham Championship in his home state and the Deutsche Bank Championship during the Fedex Playoffs.
Simpson, who seemed to be nervous early in his round, credits Watson for significantly calming him down.
In other impressive American victories yesterday, David Toms and Hunter Mahan defeated the South Korean duo of Kyung-tae Kim and Y.E. Yang 6 & 5, while Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk beat Robert Allenby and Retief Goosen 4 & 3.
Getting back to K.J. Choi who helped Scott beat Woods and Stricker 7 up, Choi almost made one of the most remarkable golf shots of all-time. With his back completely to the hole, he used the slope of a hill to the right of the hole to get his golf ball a few inches away from the cup.
Action continues to fourball this afternoon.

Nikolai Khabibulin (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)
From every angle possible, it is a great time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. The kids are producing. The veterans are producing. The entire team is buying into Tom Renney’s defensive-minded system and Nikolai Khabibulin has been completely spectacular.
On Saturday night, the Oilers (8-2-2), visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena (CBC, 8pm). Edmonton is currently tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for first place in the Western Conference. They have also only given up 18 goals all season long, five fewer than second place Dallas at 23 goals. The recent play of Khabibulin led Brad May of Rogers Sportsnet to say last night that Khabibulin right now “is the best goaltender in the NHL.”
The Coyotes meanwhile are trying to get to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third year in a row. The last two seasons they have lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. So far in 2011-12, they are 6-4-2, and tied with the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings for fifth place in the Western Conference.
The Coyotes’ top player this season is Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native Ray Whitney, who leads Phoenix with five goals, seven assists.

Keegan Bradley (Stan Badz, PGA Tour)
This year I have already introduced you to Keegan Bradley, the Byron Nelson Classic winner, and the 25 year-old rookie on the PGA Tour whose aunt is LPGA legend Pat Bradley. Now the native of Woodstock, Vermont is tied for the lead after round two of the PGA Championship at -5 with American Jason Dufner.
Bradley shot a dazzling 64 yesterday at the Atlanta Athletic Club, but because he finished on the front nine of the Highlands Course, he didn’t have a strong of a gallery on his final hole if he would have finished on the eighteenth hole.
Dufner, meanwhile, shot a 65, including an eagle on the fifth. Only once has Dufner, a native of Cleveland, finished in the top ten of a Major. He finished fifth at the 2010 PGA Championship in Wisconsin and is still looking for his first win on tour.
An American is in great position to win a major for the first time since Phil Mickelson won the 2010 Masters. Only two non-Americans (John Senden of Australia, tied for third at -4, and Andres Hansen of Denmark, tied for seventh at -3) are in the top ten.

Steve Stricker (Bing Images)
The golf world has been waiting a while for Steve Stricker to break through at a major.
On Thursday at the Atlanta Athletic Club it was Stricker’s time to shine.
The 44 year-old native of Edgerton, Wisconsin shot a dazzling 7-under 63 to take a two stroke lead on another Wisconsin native, Jerry Kelly of Madison after round one on Thursday.
Stricker has won twice already on tour this season– at the Memorial Tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus in Ohio in June and at the John Deere Classic in Illinois in July.
The Atlanta Athletic Club played very easy for a major on Thursday. There were 22 players under par. It is interesting to compare the PGA Championship to the Canadian Open, where the lowest score posted by Sean O’Hair after four days at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver was only -4. Stricker is at -7 already.

Steve Williams (Bing Images)
Normally when a golfer wins a tournament, that is the major story of the tournament.
Not this week.
I know Adam Scott of Australia defeated the world’s number one Luke Donald of England and American Rickie Fowler, the 2010 PGA Rookie of the Year by four strokes after shooting a -17 and a 65 on Sunday, but the bigger news seemed to surround Scott’s caddie Steve Williams of New Zealand.
Williams, had won the WGC Bridgestone Invitational seven times previously with Tiger Woods and was his caddie for 13 of Woods’ 14 career major titles. But the WGC win this week had significant meaning for Williams, who was let go by Woods on July 20th.
In seeing and guiding Scott win this week, Williams told the great David Feherty of CBS Sports “I’ve been a caddie for 33 years and that was the best week of my life… I’ve had 145 wins now, and that was the best win I’ve ever had.”
Williams’s comments will now be analyzed significantly in the media, and will become a big story as we head to the PGA Championship. What is on everyone’s minds now is Tiger Woods’s reaction to Williams’ statements.

Avon Cobourne (Bing Images)
Two teams above the .500 mark will take to the field Saturday night at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.
The Calgary Stampeders (3-2) will host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-2).
After a slow start, the Tiger-Cats have now won their last three games in convincing fashion, including a 34-26 win over the Grey Cup Champion Montreal Alouettes last week.
A major reason for Hamilton’s success has been the play of rookie wide receiver Chris Williams, who has 20 catches for 304 yards and three touchdowns and is a major reason why Arland Bruce III was expendable. Avon Cobourne has also been an offensive threat for the Tiger-Cats as he has 331 yards rushing and 142 yards receiving.
As for the Stampeders, they’re coming off a tight 22-18 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. There’s no doubt that defensive tackle DeVone Claybrooks of East Carolina University is starting to feel very comfortable along the line of scrimmage.
The game can be seen on TSN Saturday night at 7:30pm.

Steve Williams (Bing Images)
It looks like caddie Steve Williams will be working significantly more with Australian golf star Adam Scott in the future.
On Wednesday, Tiger Woods parted ways with Williams, his caddie for the last twelve years. Over that time, Williams was on Woods’ bag for 13 of his 14 major titles.
Woods did not report who would replace Williams and when he was planning to return to golf. Williams, from New Zealand, had worked with Scott at the U.S. Open, British Open and AT&T National (third place finish) in 2011.
According to ESPN, Woods apparently approved of Williams’ request to caddie for Scott while he was hurt, but then later changed his mind.
Williams’ net worth is estimated at $20 million.
This is the second time in Woods’ career he has made a caddie change. Mike “Fluff” Cowan, had been Woods’ caddie from 1996-99 and was his caddie when he won his first major golf tournament in 1997 at the Masters. Woods apparently got rid of Cowan because according to the Washington Post, Cowan revealed the salary Woods paid him. Since 1999, Cowan has been Jim Furyk’s caddie.

Darren Clarke (Paddy Briggs, Wikimedia Commons)
When Darren Clarke’s wife Heather died of cancer in 2006, the entire golf community mourned. But in the last five years, Clarke’s life has turned around a little. Last year, he got engaged to Miss Northern Ireland Alison Campbell, and after round two of the British Open on Friday, Clarke and American Lucas Glover are tied for the lead at -4.
Clarke, who is 42 years of age, is trying to become the third golfer from Northern Ireland to win a major. Graeme McDowell won the 2010 United States Open and Rory McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open.
Glover, meanwhile, is no stranger to major success himself, as he won the 2009 United States Open at Bethpage Black in New York.
However, Clarke and Glover are just the co-leaders in southeast England and have a long ways to go. A remarkable 31 players are within four strokes of the lead. Martin Kaymer and Miguel Angel Jimenez are in a group at -3, Americans Tom Lehman, Davis Love III and Dustin Johnson are in a group at -2, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson and English amateur Tom Lewis are in a group at -1, and Y.E. Yang, Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia are in a group at even.
TSN’s coverage begins at 4am Saturday morning. I’m waking up when Garcia is teeing off, at 5:25am Mountain Time.
