Roger Federer (Vinod Divakaran, Wikimedia Commons)
Milos Raonic may be ranked 13th at the Australian Open, but he has a lot of work to do to crack the top five in men’s tennis.
On Sunday, Raonic lost 6-4, 7-6, 6-2 in straight sets to the great Roger Federer in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Federer made Raonic run and exploit his weak backhand. The bottom line is Federer’s experience and maturity paid off and despite Raonic’s 19 aces, Raonic was unable to win many long points against the four time Australian Open champion.

Ana Ivanovic (Chris Johnson, Wikimedia Commons)
Yes there’s hockey and football this weekend, but how could one not get excited about the Australian Open at the moment. There is literally some thrilling tennis from down under. Last night, Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario advanced to the fourth round with a straight sets win over Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber. Bad news is he has Roger Federer next!
On the ladies side, Ana Ivanovic, the former French Open champion takes on Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, the Wimbledon finalist, in the fourth round (Sunday, TSN2, 1:00 a.m.)
Here are the other games I’m watching this weekend:
Saturday–NHL–Toronto Maple Leafs @ Montreal Canadiens–CBC–5:00 p.m.–I heard a report on Sportsnet yesterday that the Maple Leafs and Canadiens could battle for the worst team in the Eastern Conference this season. The Habs are expected to have Tomas Plekanec in their lineup despite some sore ribs. The Maple Leafs meanwhile will be led this season by Phil Kessel, who averaged a point a game last season.

Serena Williams (Kat Shann, Wikimedia Commons)
For the fifth time in her career, Serena Williams is the Wimbledon champion.
On Saturday, Williams defeated Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
It is the 14th major title for Williams. She has also won the Australian five times, the U.S. Open three times and the French Open once.
Williams completely dominated the first and third sets. In the first set, Williams had 16 winners to Radwanska’s five, and in the third set, Williams had 20 winners, to Radwanska’s three. Williams also had 17 aces, to Radwanska’s two.
Radwanska had the edge in play shortly after a brief rain delay, but Williams got the momentum back with an important break in the fifth game of the third set.

The Edmonton Eskimos will look to improve on their 1-0 record when they play the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium Sunday at 5pm on TSN.
However, even though both teams got into the win column last week, I was much more impressed with Saskatchewan than Edmonton.
The Roughriders completely dominated the Tiger-Cats in recording a 43-16 victory. The Eskimos have struggled mightily over the last few years in Regina and I expect most the same this weekend.
One thing the Eskimos do have going for them right now is their overall team defense. Edmonton has a chance if they force Darian Durant to be as disorganized as Ricky Ray was last week.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching:
Saturday–Women’s Wimbledon Final–(3) Agnieszka Radwanska–POL vs. (6) Serena Williams–USA–TSN–7am–There is a possibility this tennis match may not even take place at all. Radwanska, according to the Associated Press, has a serious respiratory illness right now and was forced to cancel her press conference today because of her health condition. Williams has the 2-0 advantage head to head, including an easy 6-4, 6-0 win in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Wimbledon. With the win, Radwanska will move into the world’s number one ranking.

Serena Williams (James Boyes, Wikimedia Commons)
We now know who will play in the 2012 Ladies’ Wimbledon Final.
On Thursday, American Serena Williams, the sixth seed, defeated Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-3, 7-6 and Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska defeated eighth seeded German Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4.
Williams, who will be participating in her 18th Grand Slam championship with the victory, recorded 24 aces, a Wimbledon record. Williams actually broke her own record of 23 aces which she set in the third round with her win over Jie Zheng of China in three sets.
Today’s serving was even more phenomenal by Williams when you take into account the match was only two sets and she was playing against one of the top tennis players in the world.
Williams also had 23 more aces than Azarenka, who didn’t record her first ace until Williams had 18. Williams’ serve also averaged 107 miles per hour. To put this into perspective David Ferrer’s serve yesterday in his quarterfinal loss to Andy Murray averaged 109 miles per hour.

Aleksandra Wozniak (Wikimedia Commons)
Montreal’s Aleksandra Wozniak had a very dominant performance in the second round of the French Open. But the bad news is she will have to be spectacular to advance to round four.
On Wednesday, Wozniak defeated Jie Zheng of China in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Wozniak played a nearly perfect first set of tennis. She only committed five unforced errors.
In the second set the play was quite even until Zheng injured her foot and was not running on the court at full speed thereafter.
Zheng was a formidable opponent for Wozniak, as seeded 31st in the world, has been to two grand slam semi-finals.
But now Wozniak has to play the Australian Open champion and world no.1 ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. You know, the one that has spent time in Nikolai Khabibulin’s basement.
Azarenka is 35-3 to date with her only losses coming to Marion Bartoli of France in the quarterfinals in Miami, Maria Sharapova of Russia in the final of Stuttgart and Serena Williams of the United States in the final of Madrid.

Patrick Chan (David Carmichael, Wikimedia Commons)
2011 Lionel Conacher Award winner Patrick Chan of Ottawa, Ontario is one step closer to defending his title at the World Figure Skating Championships in Nice, France.
Today, Chan put down a solid short program, and leads the Czech Republic’s Michal Brezina by 1.74 points. Due to the fact the television coverage on CBC is absolutely lousy, the event can be seen live on www.cbcsports.ca or if you have Bold. The final flight of skaters in the men’s event is at 8am and the final flight of skaters in the women’s event is at 1:30pm on Saturday with Alena Leonova of Russia in the lead. In the pairs competition today, Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov hammered the strong German pair of Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy by 8.04 points, but only hung onto the silver medal behind the Germans after a poor short program.

Keegan Bradley (Stan Badz, PGA Tour)
This year I have already introduced you to Keegan Bradley, the Byron Nelson Classic winner, and the 25 year-old rookie on the PGA Tour whose aunt is LPGA legend Pat Bradley. Now the native of Woodstock, Vermont is tied for the lead after round two of the PGA Championship at -5 with American Jason Dufner.
Bradley shot a dazzling 64 yesterday at the Atlanta Athletic Club, but because he finished on the front nine of the Highlands Course, he didn’t have a strong of a gallery on his final hole if he would have finished on the eighteenth hole.
Dufner, meanwhile, shot a 65, including an eagle on the fifth. Only once has Dufner, a native of Cleveland, finished in the top ten of a Major. He finished fifth at the 2010 PGA Championship in Wisconsin and is still looking for his first win on tour.
An American is in great position to win a major for the first time since Phil Mickelson won the 2010 Masters. Only two non-Americans (John Senden of Australia, tied for third at -4, and Andres Hansen of Denmark, tied for seventh at -3) are in the top ten.

Serena Williams (Wikimedia Commons)
In the third round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto yesterday it was clear that Serena Williams, the 13-time Grand Slam champion, is back and playing tennis at a very high level.
On Thursday, Williams made some spectacular shots, including one where she recorded a winner down the line while doing the splits, in defeating China’s Jie Zheng 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in what was the best women’s match of the week. Both players had an incredible amount of power in their shot making.
It is a little ironic the best match so far came from two players ranked in the 80′s in the world. Williams is ranked 80th and Zheng is 82nd. One could make the argument that a Williams-Zheng match is more entertaining today than a match between the top two players in the world, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark versus Kim Clijsters of Belgium.
Upsets continued on Thursday. Vera Zvonareva, the 2010 Wimbledon and U.S. Open finalist and the third seed, lost 6-4, 7-6 to thirteenth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.
In the upset of the day, Wimbledon finalist, Maria Sharapova of Russia, the fifth seed, lost to Kazakhstan’s Galina Voskoboeva, currently ranked 135th in the world, 6-3, 7-6. Voskoboeva won the match despite smashing her tennis racquet on the Toronto hardcourt after not being able to win the match during a game where she had three match points. Sharapova was unable to capitalize on Voskoboeva’s emotional outburst. She struggled with her serve throughout the match, having five double faults compared to zero aces.
