CFL Preview–Eastern Division

With the CFL season starting less than two weeks away, it’s time to preview the season. In the first of a four part series, it’s time to take a look at the teams in the Eastern Division.

Montreal Alouettes

The Alouettes are going for a three-peat in 2011. After winning the Grey Cup the last two years, head coach Marc Trestman’s name came up several times over the off-season as a possible candidate at the University of Miami and the Oakland Raiders. Well, Al Davis settled on Hue Jackson,  and the Hurricanes on Al Golden.

Trestman has proven a great ability to win with a veteran team, however I feel he did make a couple of key mistakes in terms of strategy on the sidelines last year.

Another key storyline for the Alouettes is regarding the health of  quarterback Anthony Calvillo. The three-time CFL MVP is feeling great after undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.

The Alouettes’ most significant off-season signing was cornerback Dwight Anderson from the Calgary Stampeders. The native of Spanish Town, Jamaica was third in the CFL last year with five interceptions.

In the kicking game, Sandro DeAngelis replaces Damon Duval who went to Edmonton. DeAngelis was surprisingly released by Hamilton on May 24.
