Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario and Aleksandra Wozniak of Montreal, Quebec have each moved on to the second round of the 2012 United States Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Wozniak’s victory on Monday was easy. She defeated Alexandra Cadantu of Romania in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.

Wozniak won with ten aces, no double faults, but won a remarkable 54% of points while not serving. She also had zero unforced errors in what could be considered one of the best matches Wozniak has ever played at a grand slam tennis tournament.  Wozniak now plays 15th seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic today.

As for Milos Raonic, he won, but it was anything but easy. He defeated Santiago Giraldo of Columbia 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in five grueling sets.

Raonic’s effort was given a C- by former American doubles star Luke Jensen. Raonic won despite 15 double faults and 55 unforced errors. Raonic now plays Pierre-Henri Mathieu of France.

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Venus Williams (Justin Hoch, Wikimedia Commons)

The biggest news on Monday was not just who advanced to round two, but who was eliminated from round one.

Three significant names are out–four-time Wimbledon Champion Venus Williams of the United States, along with two male seeds in the top twelve–sixth seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, the 2010 Wimbledon finalist and the eleventh seed John Isner of the United States.

Williams, has been battling Sjogren’s syndrome, was completely dominated by Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-3.

Berdych meanwhile lost to Ernests Gulbis of Latvia in three straight tie-breakers. Despite being ranked 87th in the world, Gulbis has been as high as 21st and has advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open.

Wozniak upsets Zheng but has a tough road ahead

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Aleksandra Wozniak (Wikimedia Commons)

Montreal’s Aleksandra Wozniak had a very dominant performance in the second round of the French Open. But the bad news is she will have to be spectacular to advance to round four.

On Wednesday, Wozniak defeated Jie Zheng of China in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Wozniak played a nearly perfect first set of tennis.  She only committed five unforced errors.

In the second set the play was quite even until Zheng injured her foot and was not running on the court at full speed thereafter.

Zheng was a formidable opponent for Wozniak, as seeded 31st in the world, has been to two grand slam semi-finals.

But now Wozniak has to play the Australian Open champion and world no.1 ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. You know, the one that has spent time in Nikolai Khabibulin’s basement.

Azarenka is 35-3 to date with her only losses coming to Marion Bartoli of France in the quarterfinals in Miami,  Maria Sharapova of Russia in the final of Stuttgart and Serena Williams of the United States in the final of Madrid.

Williams stunned at French Open–Was it necessary to cry?

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Seren Williams (Fergal Carr, Wikimedia Commons)

The first round of the 2012 French Open is now concluded and the most intriguing match was actually thee final one scheduled.

Home-country favourite Virgine Razzano of France delivered a remarkable comeback and then needed every shot available she had at her disposal to upset Serena Williams of the United States 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Williams was leading Razzano at one time 5-1 in the second set tie-break, before she lost the next six points.

There are a couple of remarkable statistics from the match. This is the first time in 47 Grand Slams that Serena Williams lost in the first round. Also, only two of 11 Americans lost in the first round, with the other being Jamie Hampton, who lost 6-4, 4-3 before retiring to young Dutch tennis sensation Arantxa Rus.

Stephanie Dubois (Robbie Mendelson, Wikimedia Commons)

It was a solid Monday for three Canadians at the Australian Open.

Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario, Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Quebec and Aleksandra Wozniak of Montreal, Quebec have all advanced to round two.

Yesterday, Raonic, seeded 23rd, defeated Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 in 91 minutes. Raonic had 13 aces and 13 winners to Violandri’s none.

In women’s action, Dubois defeated Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 and Wozniak defeated Shuai Zhang of China 6-3, 6-3. Toronto’s Rebecca Marino lost to Greta Arn of Hungary 6-4, 6-2.

The upset of the tournament so far came from Simona Cirstea of Romania, who beat U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur of Australia 7-6, 6-3. Stosur, a fan favourite, was the sixth seed.

The best match of the tournament I have seen so far came on Sunday night. Australian Bernard Tomic, who is only 19, beat Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

Great Canadian success at Rogers Cup

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Vasek Pospisil (Patricio Realpe, Associated Press)

Without the presence of Canadian tennis players Milos Raonic, Frank Dancevic, Peter Polansky and Philip Bester, nothing was expected from the Canadian men this week at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

I guess Vernon, British  Columbia’s Vasek Pospisil didn’t read the memo.

Ranked 155th in the world, Pospisil delivered seven aces in defeating Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela, ranked 22nd in the world, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was also a tremendous comeback by Pospisil, who showed great resiliency. The 21 year-old won the final four games of the match. The bad news for Pospisil is he gets world number three Roger Federer of Switzerland in the second round.

Pospisil was not the only Canadian to get in the winner’s circle Tuesday. Aleksandra Wozniak of Montreal upset Shahar Peer of Israel in dominant fashion 6-1, 6-0, while Stephanie Dubois of Laval defeated Kathrin Woerle of Germany easily 7-6, 6-1.

Wozniak will play 2010 French Open finalist Samantha Stosur of Australia, the tenth seed next. Surprisingly though, Wozniak has a 2-1 edge , having beaten her in Stanford and Tokyo in 2008.

As for Dubois, she will play Belarussian Victoria Azarenka, the fourth seed, in round two.

Raonic dominates Gicquel at Wimbledon

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Milos Raonic (John Donegan, Associated Press)

Ok. It might have only been a first round match against the 119th ranked player in the world, but the bottom line is that Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario was dominant today in his first round match at Wimbledon.

Raonic, seeded 31st at the most prestigious tennis tournament of the year, defeated France’s Marc Gicquel handily in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

Just how dominant was Raonic? In the first set he won 100% of his points on his first serve. He also ended up with a remarkable 25 aces compared to zero double faults.

This is a fantastic time to be a Canadian tennis fan. Raonic is only a rookie on the ATP Tour, but has proven already he is for real. There has never been a Canadian male singles’ tennis player that has generated so much excitement and interest.

The other four Canadians will play their first round matches tomorrow. Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ontario will play Ricardo Mello of Brazil. On the women’s side, Aleksandra Wozniak of Montreal plays Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova of the Czech Republic, Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Quebec plays Irina Falconi of the United States and Rebecca Marino of Vancouver plays Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria tomorrow.

Mixed results for Canada at day two of the French Open

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Aleksandra Wozniak (Robbie Mendelson, Wikimedia Commons)

There was good and there was bad  news for Canadian tennis on Monday.

I’m in a good mood today, so let’s start with the good.

Aleksandra Wozniak of Montreal was dominant in her first round match against Junri Namigata of Japan.

Wozniak only lost two games in the entire match in defeating Namigata 6-1, 6-1.

Namigata looked completely unsure of herself on the court. She slipped on the clay early in the match, and never really seemed to generate any momentum whatsoever.

The biggest difference in the match was winners. Wozniak had 25, while Namigata only had five.

Marino moves on to round two of French Open

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Rebecca Marino (Nick Laham, Getty Images)

On the first day of the French Open, Vancouver-raised Rebecca Marino found her a first round winner.

Marino defeated Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets this morning at Roland Garros.

Bondarenko, ranked 113th in the world, is more of a doubles specialist. She won the 2008 Australian Open with her sister Alona.

A major reason why Marino won on Sunday was her serve. She had four aces, compared to Bondarenko’s none, while Bondarenko had four double faults, compared to Marino’s none.

Weekend Sports Preview May 20-23–NHL Playoffs, NBA Playoffs, MLB, Preakness, French Open

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Kevin Bieksa (Wikimedia Commons)

The Vancouver Canucks are only six wins away from becoming the first Canadian based team since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup.

So far in the Western Conference Final against the San Jose Sharks, Henrik Sedin, the 2010 Hart Trophy Winner, has been the best Canuck, as he has scored one goal and four assists.

Henrik, is a +1 against San Jose, after going a combined -8 against the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators in the first two rounds.

Another Canuck that has stepped up in the Western Conference Final is Kevin Bieksa, who has two goals and an assist. In game two, he had the Gordie Howe hat trick, as he also surprisingly fought Patrick Marleau in the second period.

For the Sharks to get back in the series, they may have to get a little less physical. They took too many undisciplined penalties in game two that cost them. Game three is tonight at 7pm in San Jose (CBC) and game four is also in San Jose on Sunday at 1pm (NBC).
