The Calgary Flames delivered a heroic comeback Sunday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

With the game tied 4-4, Curtis Glencross scored with exactly one minute left in regulation, to give the Flames a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

According to TSN, the Flames are now at 7-7-3 and are two points back of the San Jose Sharks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the tight Western Conference. Four points are currently separating 5th place and 13th place. The Flames are currently in twelfth position. The Oilers and Flames have the same record of 7-7-3, but the Flames have more regulation wins.

Glencross, who added an assist, was one of five Flames to have a multi-point game. Jarome Iginla scored twice, including the game tying goal with 1:23 left, while Lee Stempniak, Alex Tanguay and Chris Butler all had two assists.

Flames have offensive slugfest in win over Stars

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

Michael Cammalleri (Wikimedia Commons)

The Calgary Flames went on an offensive scoring spirit Wednesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Michael Cammalleri had a hat trick and added an assist for a four point game in a convincing 7-4 win over the Dallas Stars.

Roman Cervenka, Jarome Iginla, Lee Stempniak and Alex Tanguay also had multi-point games as the Flames improved to 4-4-3 on the season and are four points back of the St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The win by the Flames shouldn’t be that much of a surprise however. First, the Stars were playing their second game of a back-to-back after an impressive win the previous night in Edmonton, and the second reason is that Kari Lehtonen is a much better goaltender than Richard Bachman, who struggled mightily Wednesday in giving up 6 goals on 22 shots.

Tanguay leads the Flames with four goals, five assists and nine points in eight games.

Jiri Hudler  and T.J. Brodie had multi-point games for the Flames as they each had two assists.

Flames definitely remain in playoff hunt

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Mike Cammalleri (Wikimedia Commons)

The Calgary Flames must be pleased that they’re back home after a disappointing road trip.

Monday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Mike Cammalleri scored a goal and two assists as the Flames defeated the Dallas Stars 5-4 to jump back into the Western Conference playoff chase. Alex Tanguay scored the game winning goal for the Flames with 28 seconds left in the second period, one of four goals the Flames scored in the middle frame.

Defenceman Mark Giordano had a goal and an assist and captain Jarome Iginla had two assists.

With the win, the Flames are two points back of the Phoenix Coyotes for the eighth and final playoff spot. But in order for them to catch Phoenix, they have to catch Los Angeles and Colorado as well, who are each one point up on the Flames  in the standings.

The Flames got huge help Monday night from the Vancouver Canucks who got a shutout from Roberto Luongo in a 1-0 win over Los Angeles.

The Flames next play the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night.

Tanguay key in Flames win over Jets

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Alex Tanguay (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)

The Calgary Flames are only one point back of a playoff spot. On Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Flames defeated the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 5-3.

The Flames got a huge offensive performance from winger Alex Tanguay who notched a goal and three assists.  The 32 year-old veteran from Ste-Justine, Quebec now has two goals and seven assists in his last five games.

Other Flames with big nights were Jarome Iginla (one goal, two assists), Olli Jokinen (three assists), and defenceman Mark Giordano (one goal and on assist).

Another Flame that has played well as of late has been Matt Stajan, the only Flame left from the Dion Phaneuf blockbuster trade with Toronto. Stajan got a first period goal and notched an assist on Tanguay’s second period game winner. He is also playing strong defensively at the moment too as head coach Brent Sutter is having him play with Iginla a little more.

Sven Baertschi, the Flames first round pick from the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, made his NHL debut. The Swiss native had one shot in 9:08 of ice time.

The Flames won despite being outshot 45-27. Mikka Kiprusoff made 42 saves in the victory. The Flames have 74 total points and are one point back of the San Jose Sharks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They next play the Minnesota Wild on Sunday afternoon.

Flames beat Coyotes 4-2

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

The Calgary Flames were outstanding for a five minute stretch late in the first period Thursday night in Phoenix where they scored three goals en route to a 4-2 victory over the Coyotes.

Jarome Iginla led the way offensively with a goal and an assist– his goal coming late in the third period into an empty net. Alex Tanguay was the other Flame with a multi-point performance with two assists.

The Flames actually scored their three goals in a span of 3:14. Michael Cammalleri opened the scoring, followed by a shorthanded marker by Curtis Glencross and then nearly a second shorthanded goal by Olli Jokinen, but T.J. Brodie had come out of the penalty box three seconds earlier. Glencross and Jokinen each scored their 20th of the season.

The Flames showed the hockey world Thursday they didn’t need a complete 60-minute effort to win an important game down the stretch. The Coyotes dominated the second period, outshooting the Flames 15-6 before a relatively even third period.

The Flames now travel west to Anaheim to take on the Ducks tonight. They are currently two points back of Dallas for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

In other hockey action, you had to have been impressed with the Winnipeg Jets’ unbelievable effort in their 7-0 win over the Florida Panthers. Evander Kane led the way with two goals and two assists and Ondrej Pavelec recorded  33 saves for the shutout. Winnipeg now leads Washington by one point in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Flyers beat Flames in a shootout

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

The Calgary Flames couldn’t hold on to the lead at key times Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Flames had a 3-0 lead during the second period, only to see the Philadelphia Flyers roar back to tie the game at 3. The Flames regained momentum in the third period on a goal by Alex Tanguay on a controversial penalty shot, only to see the Flyers tie the game up again at 4 on a tip in from Scott Hartnell.

The shootout meanwhile went five rounds when Matt Read scored the winning goal.

One major area for the Flyers however definitely seems to be their goaltending. Ilya Bryzgalov gave up two very soft goals to Mark Giordano and Matt Stajan early in the game on the Flames first two shots. I know Bryzgalov has a massive long term contract, but whether or not he is the long term question is up for debate. The Flames were outshot heavily in this one 45-21, and were actually lucky to get the single point.

Currently Calgary is one point back of Dallas for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They next play the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

The Oilers meanwhile continued to show inconsistency Saturday in a 3-1 loss at home to Phoenix. They next play in Winnipeg on Monday.

Flames trounce Maple Leafs 5-1

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

The Calgary Flames beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 last night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Alex Tanguay led the way with a goal and two assists, but was surprisingly not given star status, despite being the best Flames skater according to the FAN 960′s Pat Steinberg and the Calgary Herald’s George Johnson.

Jarome Iginla and Olli Jokinen also played well by notching a goal and an assist each. With many injuries in the Flames lineup, the Tanguay-Jokinen-Iginla line has been spectacular in recent weeks and is a major reason why the Flames are currently only one point back of Phoenix for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They have been so good, they just might be the best line in hockey at the present time. What do you think?

Paul Byron added a goal on a second period penalty shot and Blake Comeau scored late in the third period to put the game out of reach. Miikka Kiprusoff added 41 saves.

The Flames next play the Dallas Stars tomorrow night.

Oilers & Flames lose Monday

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Niklas Hagman (Wikimedia Commons)

The Calgary Flames continue to struggle in Anaheim. They have now lost 14 straight games at the Honda Center. On Monday night, former Flame forward Niklas Hagman scored the shootout winner a 3-2 Anaheim win.

The Flames did however preserve a much needed point in the Western Conference Standings when Jarome Iginla tied the game at 2 by scoring on the breakaway. The Flames captain has now scored at least 20 goals every year since 1998-99. Alex Tanguay was the other Flames goal scorer.

Calgary is now three points back of the Minnesota Wild for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They next play in San Jose Wednesday night.

The Oilers defensive woes meanwhile continued Monday night in Toronto. Tyler Bozak scored a key goal for the Maple Leafs on a Cam Barker giveaway that gave Toronto a 4-1 lead at the time en route to a 6-3 victory. The Oilers had no answers for Phil Kessel, who scored two goals, an assist, had six shots and was a solid +4.

Edmonton also got hit with the injury bug on Monday as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins re-injured his shoulder and head coach Tom Renney was absent behind the bench because he got hit in the head with the puck during practice. This was the latest segment of injuries this season prior to game time.

Edmonton next plays in Detroit on Wednesday.

Flames beat Blackhawks 3-1

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Jay Bouwmeester (Wikimedia Commons)

The Calgary Flames moved closer to a playoff spot Friday night.

At the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Flames moved within three points of the Minnesota Wild for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 3-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Flames goal scorers Friday were Olli Jokinen, Jay Bouwmeester and Jarome Iginla. Jokinen’s goal was a top corner shot. Bouwmeester meanwhile came in from the point on the powerplay and Iginla deked Ray Emery after receiving a beautiful long pass from Alex Tanguay.

The Flames finally generated some offense after scoring only one goal in their last two games combined. Miikka Kiprusoff was also key as he recorded 26 saves in a game where he passed Mike Vernon as the Flames’ all-time leader in games played with 527.

In other Flames news, the team called up Calgary native Krystofer Kolanos from Abbotsford who played in his first NHL game in three years. Kolanos could be a very valuable part of the Flames offense because of his experience (11 goals with Phoenix in 2002) and the injuries to Curtis Glencross (on the injury reserve with a lower body injury), David Moss (possibly out for the season with an ankle injury) and Lee Stempniak out for the next six weeks with a high ankle sprain.

Calgary next plays in Anaheim on Monday night.  The Blackhawks meanwhile have now lost five straight.

Flames lose to Sharks 1-0

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

The Calgary Flames go into the All-Star break three points back of the Minnesota Wild for a playoff spot.

On Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Flames lost 1-0 to the San Jose Sharks.

The game was 0-0 heading into the third period, when the Sharks scored the deciding marker. Benn Ferriero gloved the puck down and scored on the rebound.

Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi was outstanding in this one. He made a great glove save off of Mikael Backlund in the third period, and that was followed by a big save off of Alex Tanguay on the breakaway. Tanguay was playing in his first game for the Flames since late December when he injured his neck. Niemi ended with 25 saves and had his 16th career shutout.

The Flames will now rest for a full week. Their next game is on January 31 against the Detroit Red Wings at the Saddledome. One player that will not et a break however is captain Jarome Iginla, who will be part of the festivities this weekend in Ottawa.

Weekend Sports Preview–December 10 & 11–NHL, NFL & Figure Skating

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

Alex Tanguay (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)

The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames battle in Part Three of the Battle of Alberta tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome (CBC, 8pm). Oilers fans will hope a different chapter is written this time around after the first two were significantly similar. In both occasions, the Flames came from behind in the third period to grab two points in the Northwest Division standings.

On October 18, Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Tanguay each scored in the last six minutes as the Flames defeated the Oilers 2-1. Then last Saturday, Derek Smith, Mikael Backlund and Olli Jokinen scored third period goals for the Flames that eliminated a 3-2 lead for the Oilers en route to a 5-3 Calgary victory.

If Edmonton is going to contend for a playoff spot in March, better consistency throughout the entire 60 minutes is in order. Last night in their 4-1 win over Colorado, they had a solid third period effort while leading 4-1 and didn’t allow a strong quality scoring chance for the Avalanche in the final twenty minutes.

As for the Flames, they are back on track a little bit, at the .500 mark at 13-13-2. They are three points back of the San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars and Oilers for the final two playoff spots in the Western Conference.

Weekend Sports Preview–December 3-4–NCAA, NHL, NFL, Skiing

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Wikimedia Commons)

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is having quite the season. This past week he became only the second player in hockey history to be named the rookie of the month for the first two months of the season, following Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The first overall draft pick of the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft and the early Calder trophy favourite is currently fifth in the league in overall scoring with 28 points.

Tonight at Rexall Place, the Oilers, who have a record of 13-10-3, host the Calgary Flames in the second game of Hockey Night in Canada (CBC, 8pm). Even though the Oilers are on the second game of a back-to-back, this may be a good time to play the Flames who are coming off a tough 4-3 loss to Columbus on Thursday. So far this season, Alex Tanguay leads the team with 13 assists and 17 points. The Flames won the first meeting 2-1 in Calgary on a game winning goal by Tanguay with 4:28 left in the contest. Like the Oilers’ Ales Hemsky, Tanguay is a similar player who would be better if he just shot the puck more. He only has 31 shots in 24 games played with four goals.
