Maple Leafs find new ways to lose

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

The Toronto Maple Leafs are not only playing like a team that hasn’t won the Stanley Cup in forty-five years, they’re also playing like a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in forty-five years.

Tuesday night against the Buffalo Sabres, the Leafs just found a new way to lose a hockey game. Leading the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 with six minutes left, Alexander Sulzer pulled the Sabres within one before Jordan Leopold tied the score at five goals apiece. Derek Roy then scored the game winner in overtime when Dion Phaneuf took a two minute penalty for shooting the puck over the glass.

So what does the 6-5 Buffalo win mean? Well, the Sabres are tied with the Washington Capitals for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with Washington having the tie-breaker. Buffalo plays Philadelphia and Boston while Washington plays Florida and the New York Rangers.

I think we all new the Leafs were bad? But this bad? Spruce Grove’s Ben Scrivens has shown flashes of brilliance, but it is difficult to stay positive when you give up six goals in one night.

I predicted the Leafs to make the playoffs at the beginning of the season. I was wrong. It will be interested to see how long Toronto will take before they gut the team and move in the same path as Edmonton. Oh wait. I don’t think that will happen because they have a GM that shows interest in trading draft picks. Sorry Leaf fans. I don’t see you winning the Cup or even making the playoffs for another 45 years!

Flames do nothing, Oilers little at the deadline

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I was expected to be very busy this afternoon writing about a significant number of trades.

The bottom line, there might have been one that I’ll get to later. But living in Alberta, I think it comes as a huge surprise how little the Oilers did and that the Flames did nothing today.

Message to Nikolai Khabibulin, Ales Hemsky, and Ryan Smyth. It’s time to step up. Management has shown confidence in all three of you and it’s time to take your game to the next level.

As for the Flames, it looks like they will continue to battle for a playoff spot. Good news for Flames fans is that Miikka Kiprusoff is reminding you of 2004 and if you get into the playoffs, anything can happen.
