Her team may not be 100% health wise, but British Columbia’s Kelly Scott came away with a huge 7-5 victory over defending champion Amber Holland of Yorkton, Saskatchewan after day three of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Red Deer.
In a battle of the titans as both teams were a perfect 3-0 heading into play, Scott stole one point in the tenth and final end to preserve the victory.
B.C. won without regular third Sasha Carter who had a stomach flu. So that meant rookie Dailene Siverston went to third and fifth Sherry Fraser got some playing time.
In an upset this afternoon, Prince Edward Island delivered a great comeback in a victory over Saskatchewan. Kim Dolan, P.E.I.’s 53 year-old skip was down 7-4 after seven, but got one back with the hammer in the eighth end and then stole two in the ninth end before getting the win in the tenth end.
As for Team Alberta after their first four games, they are 2-2. They have defeated co-favourite Jennifer Jones of Manitoba and Ontario, and were upset by Kelly Gelusha of the Yukon/Northwest Territories and also lost a tight 6-5 game last night to Team Canada.

We now know what curling teams will represent their respective provinces at the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Red Deer from February 18-26.
Team Alberta will be represented by Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin who will be skipping at her second National Championship. She finished 6-5 at the 2000 Scott Tournament of Hearts in Prince George, British Columbia. Nedohin defeated Jessie Kaufman 8-5 Sunday in Leduc.
Nedohin has significant experience at the National Championship. She won the Scott Tournament of Hearts in 1998 as a third to Cathy King. Nedohin also represented Alberta at the 1997 Scott Tournament of Hearts.
Other very notable names are defending champion Amber Holland of Team Canada, 2007 World Champion Kelly Scott of British Columbia and 2008 World Champion Jennifer Jones of Manitoba.

The Calgary Flames are a very lucky franchise. Saturday night they came all the way back to beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 in a shootout after being down 4-1 in the third period.
I agree with Edmonton Oilers’ head coach Tom Renney who was pleased with the Oilers’ effort. For fifty minutes, the Oilers carried the play, and Renney should be delighted with the play of Teemu Hartikainen, Linus Omark, Ryan O’Marra and Magnus Paajarvi. They held their own and played at a high level. The Flames were lucky to beat the Edmonton/Oklahoma City Boilers. (Oarons just doesn’t make any sense!)
In curling, I’ll tell you again, if Amber Holland had Jennifer Jones’ front end, Canada would have won the Women’s World Curling Championship easily this past week. I would take Dawn Askin and Jill Officer over Heather Kalenchuk and Tammi Schneider any day. Team Canada simply could not make a shot in the tenth end of the Gold medal game against Sweden’s Anette Norberg, and at the end of the day, it cost them significantly.
Finally in March Madness, Connecticut, Butler, Virginia Commonwealth and Kentucky are off to the final four next weekend in Houston. We have two NCAA basketball powerhouses in UConn and Kentucky, and two schools that many basketball fans will cheer for because of their underdog, small school status!

Some of the best women’s curlers in the world take to the ice this weekend for the Women’s World Curling Championship in Denmark. Canada’s Amber Holland has qualified for the 3-4 game after a shaky start. This morning, Holland, of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, defeated Mirjam Ott of Switzerland 8-6 in the tie-breaker. Holland will go on to play Denmark’s Lene Nielsen in the 3-4 page playoff game (TSN, 3AM). And yes folks, I have my alarm set!
If Holland is successful in the middle of our night, I will sleep two hours and get up for 8am, when the Canada-Denmark winner will face China’s Bingyu Wang in the semi-final. Despite beating Wang in the round robin by a score of 8-6, Wang’s resume is impressive. She won the 2009 World Women’s Curling Championship in Gangneung, South Korea and the Olympic bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Is it time to panic? Is it time to question if the current status quo is the best way to determine a Canadian champion?
After Day Five of the Women’s World Curling Championships in Esjberg, Denmark, it is. Ok, Canada has a record of 4-3. Amber Holland’s rink is a game over the .500 mark. But the bottom line is that she is simply not living up to the Canadian standards when it comes to the sport.
Is it her fault? No. Amber Holland’s team have played just as well to date as they did at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. They might have played a little better in Charlottetown at the half way point in the round robin, but there were many instances where their opponent lost the game rather than Holland winning them.

Amber Holland (Bing Images)
Howdy folks, another weekend sports recap. This one comes a day late as I was busy monitoring all the transactions in the NHL yesterday, and blogging for anysportanytime.ca.
On the weekend, Saskatchewan’s Amber Holland became the latest athlete to win a Championship, mainly because of a key mistake by his or her opponent. At the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, representing Team Canada, because she was the defending champion, failed to execute her final shot, allowing Holland the victory. Jones’s stone on the runback attempt went too far allowing Holland the 8-7 victory.

Heritage Classic (Bing Images)
Watching regular season NHL hockey outdoors doesn’t come around very often, and when it does, you have to make the most of it.
This past weekend, I attended the Heritage Classic, and it was an amazing sight to say the least. I had access to ice level for the Flames’ practice Saturday, attended the majority of the press conferences, watched the game with many international media from McMahon Stadium’s Media Work Room and interviewed the Flames in the Stampeders dressing room. Others who I interviewed included Paul Brandt, Jacques Martin, and Jay Feaster, and was involved in a press conference with Gary Bettman.

Cathy Overton-Clapham (Yahoo! Images)
All Canadian curling fans should mark this date and time on their calendar.
Wednesday, February 23 at 4:30 pm MT.
That is when defending Canadian champion Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg takes on 2011 Manitoba Provincial Champion Cathy Overton-Clapham of Winnipeg at the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
So why does this match generate more interest than all of the others?
Well, it is because Jones dropped Overton-Clapham as her long-time third on April 23, after Jones failed to win gold at the Women’s World Curling Championship in Swift Current, Saskatchewan this past year. Overton-Clapham was Jones’ third for four Scotties Tournament of Hearts titles in 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
