I always love this time of year because of the anticipation of what kind of year it’s going to be for the Edmonton Oilers.
Since the minute their season ended I’ve been dreaming about trades, free-agent signings, draft picks, starting goaltenders and line combinations. There are so many unknowns to the lineup and right now, the hype in my head has all of those unknowns turning out as best-case scenarios.
It’s like waiting for the new EAsports NHL game to come out each year. You want to see what new changes they’ve made, how much your favourite players have increased in their ratings and it’s an early way to see what other people (those who come up with the ratings for instance) think about your team. I always think that I can win the cup with the Oilers and their opening day lineups.
I also love this time of year because this is the only time where I expect to see the entire A-squad out for the Oilers. Usually (not this year) all of the players on the roster are healthy and have had an entire off-season (longer than 16 other teams) to recover and regroup from last season.
It’s time for another 15 Minutes of Fame video for your enjoyment.
This week, the boys talk about the rash of concussions NHL players seem to be playing with. Is it an issue with the players? With management? With NHL team’s medical staff?
They then talk about all of the players begging out of the NHL All-Star game next week. Then they talk about the NHL scandal of the week – LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi coming out against NHL VP Mike Murphy and getting fined for it. They finish the first stage of the video with more rumours about Lance Armstrong’s doping.
In this week’s GABBYs, first the good: The NHL Sabre’s Nathan Gerbe scores two goals in five seconds. Vernon Wells is dealt to the LA Angels and Saku Koivu makes his return to Montreal.
On the bad side, the woes of the Ottawa Senators, The National Lacrosse League’s Boston Blazers’s lap dance half-time show and yet another scandal involving Brett Favre.
In Quick Hits: Peter Forsberg practices with the Colorado Avalanche, Evgeni Nabakov won’t report to the New York Islanders and Jim and I are hosting a sports hot stove.

Mario Lemieux at the 2010 Winter Classic Alumni Game (Bloomberg)
Remember when the 2003 Heritage Classic in Edmonton drew 57,ooo people (including yours truly) to watch the Edmonton Oilers play the Montreal Canadiens? It was the first ever regular-season National Hockey League game played outdoors.
It was such a magical event that it drew the likes of Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky and a still-active Mark Messier to an alumni game played a few hours before the regular-season game.
The whole event was broadcast on Hockey Night in Canada – Don Cherry even showed up wearing a cowboy hat. There was fanfare, fun and the feeling that just maybe, the alumni game was a little bit more exciting than the regular-season game. (more…)
In which our heroes talk about the Edmonton Oilers and what the team can do to turn around the year.

In a section Kerrzy calls “The Hoop and the Harm” on his website, he asks Geoff if he were playing a game of pickup ball against President Barack Obama, would Geoff take the hard foul on the Commander in Chief?
There is a new section they call the GABBY’s – tune in to see how you can become part of the show!
In Quick Hits: Scottish soccer refs cry foul and then strike, and which is worse – Terrell Owens or Ovechkin and Kovalchuk.

In a recent interview for this quarter’s Prospect Magazine, I had a chance to interview Monique Sullivan, a cyclist and newly minted medal winner at the Commonwealth Games in Dehli, India. This week Sullivan earned a bronze medal in the women’s team sprint event and I figured this is as good a time as any to celebrate that by posting the video of our interview.
Read the Montreal Gazette article and then watch the interview, then go pick up the most recent issue of Prospect Magazine and read the profile on Sullivan inside.
