Seahawks acquire Harvin from Vikings Monday

The Seattle Seahawks are once again counting on a former Minnesota Viking.

On Monday, the Seahawks acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin from the Vikings for their first, seventh and middle round draft pick.

Harvin led the Vikings with 677 receiving yards in 2012 and provides quarterback Russell Wilson another formidable deep threat to accompany another former Viking in Sidney Rice and former Fighting Irish product Golden Tate.

The Seahawks weren’t the only team in the NFC West however to significantly improve at the wide receiver position on Monday. The San Francisco 49ers acquired Anquan Boldin from the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens on Monday for a sixth round draft pick.

Boldin, who will now be joining his third NFL team (has also played with the Arizona Cardinals) was unwilling to restructure his contract in Baltimore.

Ravens & 49ers to play in Super Bowl

Sunday, January 20th, 2013

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers will be playing in the Super Bowl two weeks from now in New Orleans.

On Sunday, the Ravens defeated the New England Patriots 28-13 in the AFC Championship and the 49ers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 in the NFC Championship.

With the Ravens and 49ers playing in the Super Bowl, it will mean that brothers will be coaching against each other with John Harbaugh coaching Baltimore and Jim Harbaugh coaching San Francisco.

In the AFC Championship, a major story surrounded the tight ends. The Patriots had a tough time stopping Dennis Pitta in a key Raven drive early in the third quarter. Even though Aaron Hernandez had a respectable day, having nine catches for 83 yards, it was clear the team missed Rob Gronkowski.

Week 4 NFL picks

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

Ok. I admit. I was horrible in my picks last week. My apologies to the Oakland Raiders for not having faith in them against the Steelers.

I was 5-11 and am 26-22 on the year. But I do have a solid excuse. I’m blaming everything on the replacement referees who were God awful a week ago. Thank-you to the fact we don’t have to see them again as the league came to an agreement with the regulars on Wednesday. With the regulars back, I am guaranteeing a 10 win week, or I will buy Terry Nistor, the founder of www.anysportanytime.ca and Prospect Magazine a bowl of soup the next time I see him!

I am already 1-0 for the week as the Baltimore Ravens beat the Cleveland Browns 23-16 on 131 receiving yards by Anquan Boldin.

Bills trade Lee Evans to Ravens

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Lee Evans (Ed Yourdon, Wikimedia Commons)

The Buffalo Bills have traded their second best wide receiver.

On Friday, the Bills traded Lee Evans to the Baltimore Ravens for a fourth round draft pick. With the acquisition of Evans, the Ravens become significantly stronger offensively. They can put Anquan Boldin on one side of their offensive formation and Evans on the other side. Suddenly, the options become abundant for quarterback Joe Flacco, who can also hand the ball off to Ray Rice at anytime.

I know the Ravens are known for their defense, but suddenly their offense, in my opinion, matches up very well against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North, even with the loss of tight end Todd Heap to the Arizona Cardinals.

From a Bills’ standpoint, Stevie Johnson becomes the undisputed number one target for starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Johnson had a breakout year in 2010 catching 82 passes for 1073 yards and ten touchdowns. But with the loss of Evans, Johnson will see the starting cornerbacks of many elite teams. It will be interesting to see if he gets as open in 2011 as he did in 2010.

From a financial perspective, the Bills actually save $3.25 million.

NFL Weekend Picks

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

Peyton Manning (Jed Jacobsohn, Getty Images)

I’ve realized something. It is difficult to make predictions in the National Football League when I am trying to figure all 32 teams in the league out and late in the season, when teams that are in the playoffs start resting their talent and those who are out are looking at possible prospects for next year.

I have now had two straight 6-10 weeks. My overall record now is 147-93.

One last week to go folks. Here are my picks for Week 17:

11am

Atlanta over Carolina–The Falcons win the NFC South with a win, so expect them to dress their starters throughout.

Pittsburgh over Cleveland–Like the Falcons, the Steelers will probably dress their starters regularly because a win guarantees them first place in the AFC North. Expect a regular dose of Ben Roethlisberger and Rashard Mendenhall.
