The Los Angeles Kings have won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Dustin Brown scored a goal and two assists as the Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-1 to win the Stanley Cup Finals 4-2.
Now it is your turn. Please comment below what Los Angeles you are most happy for by winning the Stanley Cup.
Is it Darryl Sutter, who controversially was fired by the Calgary Flames after a solid run as Head Coach and General Manager?
Was it Dustin Penner, who signed a contract that many questioned in Edmonton, and flourished on the Kings second line with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter?
Was it Mike Richards, Simon Gagne and Drew Doughty who have now won an Olympic Gold medal and Stanley Cup?

Anze Kopitar (Nichole Glaze, Wikimedia Commons)
The Los Angeles Kings are only three wins away from their very first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Wednesday night in New Jersey, Anze Kopitar scored on a breakaway in overtime as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 2-1 to take a 1-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Kopitar was able to easily skate into the Devils zone when there was a Devils defensive breakdown. Dainius Zubrus and Bryce Salvador both went after Kings’ forward Justin Williams, allowing Kopitar to be wide open.
It is interesting because of the timing. The error probably would not have happened when the Devils were so defensively sound a few years ago with Scott Niedermayer and Scott Stevens at the forefront of the Devils blueline.
With the win, the Kings are a perfect 9-0 in the playoffs. Former Oiler Colin Fraser, who was traded for Ryan Smyth in the offseason, opened the scoring with his first career playoff goal.

Drew Doughty (Wikimedia Commons)
The Los Angeles Kings are doing the same thing they did to the St. Louis Blues as they did to the Vancouver Canucks in round one.
They are basically steamrolling by their opposition.
Thursday night, the Kings were by far the dominant team in a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the Western Conference Semi-Finals.
Defenceman Drew Doughty led the Kings offensively with a goal and two assists. Mike Richards and Anze Kopitar also had multi-point games, who are now 7-1 in the postseason and are one win away from defeating the no.1 and no.2 seeds in the West.
Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick didn’t give up a bad goal, unlike Blues netminder Brian Elliott who was very shaky in net. However one thing I feel Quick needs to do a better job with is his decisions with the puck. He was wandering a little too much this evening and it almost cost him on more than one occasion.
Meanwhile in the East, the New Jersey Devils got an overtime winner from Alexei Ponikarovsky to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 and take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

Alexander Ovechkin (Wikimedia Commons)
Alexander Ovechkin was spectacular when Washington needed him most in Game two of the Eastern Conference Semi-Final.
Ovechkin scored the game winning goal while Rangers forward Brad Richards was in the penalty box with 7:27 left in the final period.
Despite only playing 13:36 of the game, six minutes fewer than teammate Jay Beagle, Ovechkin had a game high seven shots on net as Washington tied the series at one with a 3-2 win. A major reason why Ovechkin saw his ice time dip is because it appears Head Coach Dale Hunter was not satisfied with his defensive play. Should he have been on the ice more?
The other interesting result Monday came from the eighth seeded Los Angeles Kings who had an offensive explosion in the first period against the St. Louis Blues. This is the second straight series that the Kings seemed to have their opponent off guard. Anze Kopitar scored twice and Dustin Brown had three assists as Los Angeles defeated St. Louis 5-2 to take a 2-0 Western Conference Semi-Final lead. The Kings are now a perfect 5-0 on the road in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Los Angeles Kings defeated the Calgary Flames 4-1 Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome in a game loaded with unique storylines.
In this particular game you had Brent Sutter coach for the Flames against his brother Darryl, who coaches the Kings. When the two worked in Calgary, with Brent as the head coach and Darryl as the general manager, they had somewhat of a rocky relationship.
You also had the return of forward Michael Cammalleri, who was traded to Calgary from Montreal for Rene Bourque this week. Cammalleri scored the only Flames goal, his tenth of the season.
After a scoreless first period, the Kings jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Anze Kopitar, Mike Richards and Matt Greene.
Kings forward Dustin Penner was back in the lineup after suffering back spasms from eating his wife’s pancakes.
In other Flames news, General Manager Jay Feaster cleared up why Cammalleri wasn’t told immediately where he had been traded on Thursday night. According to CBC, the reason is Feaster didn’t want to make the trade official until the Flames’ game against Anaheim started so Bourque could serve one extra game of his five game suspension. This was a very classy move by Feaster that should strengthen his relationship with other General Managers in the National Hockey League.

We’re almost a month into the new NHL season, and the beauty goals just keep on coming!
Last time, the goal of the week was a filthy little kick-and-tap by Phoenix’s Mikkel Boedker, but we’ve got a whole new set of snipes and dangles for your perusal! There is one familiar name on this list, and a couple that have been on the cusp in previous weeks…but enough talking, let’s go!
5. Simon Gagne
The NBA is in full lockout mode at the moment, but you wouldn’t know it if you were at the Staples Center this week! Check out this little alley-oop play from Anze Kopitar to Simon Gagne, who outwaits Brian Elliot and puts the biscuit in the basket…VIDEOS AFTER THE JUMP! (more…)

Drew Doughty (Wikimedia Commons)
It appears Drew Doughty has won his war with the Los Angeles Kings and ended his holdout.
According to TSN, Doughty has signed an eight year deal worth $56 million. According to Los Angeles Kings’ General Manager, Dean Lombardi, he didn’t want to pay Doughty more money than Kings’ star forward Anze Kopitar (unless the contract was worth nine seasons), and it appears he has got it, as Kopitar is to average $6.98 million over the next four seasons.
Is Doughty worth an average of $7 million a season until 202o? I say no. First, I am not a huge fan of long term contracts in a physical sport such as hockey. Too many possible issues can go wrong. Just ask the New York Islanders in their case with Rick DiPietro.
Secondly, Doughty actually had a much better 2010 season than he did 2011. Doughty had 59 points in 2010 compared to 40 in 2011, and was only a +13 in 2011 compared to a +20 in 2010.
Finally, the Kings are stating that Doughty is more valuable to the franchise than Kopitar. I say no, he is not, and agree with Lombardi’s original viewpoint. Kopitar has averaged 77 points over the last two years, and in my opinion, has a better upside by a little bit. You could make the case for Doughty though by arguing that a star defensive prospect is more valuable than a star forward prospect. I guess time will tell.

Well folks, the NHL postseason is finally here: sixteen teams looking for sixteen wins and an opportunity to sip out of Lord Stanley’s famed mug.
The first round of the playoffs begins on Wednesday night and features some burning rivalries, new and old, and some others that are slowing inching toward “rivalry” status. Whatever the case, it won’t be long now until we see the captain of one of the sixteen remaining teams lifting the Stanley Cup proudly over his head…but who will it be?
Here’s a look, through my eyes, at the Western Conference pairings! (more…)

Jason Arnott (Rob Carr, Getty Images)
The overall prognosis on February 28th, was that the majority of teams in the National Hockey League didn’t improve themselves all that significantly by moves they made on the final day of the trade deadline.
However two former Oilers have stepped up since being traded.
I know Jason Arnott has not been an Oiler since 1998, but the former Oilers’ first rounder has been a definite spark plug for a Washington Capitals team that is red hot. Since Arnott was traded from the Devils for Dave Steckel, the Capitals are 7-0, and Arnott has two goals, three assists, is a +5, and 16 shots on goal over that time. He has also played extremely well alongside Alexander Semin and Alexander Ovechkin on the powerplay. Over that time Ovechkin has four goals and seven assists and Semin has three goals and three assists.
