The teams have been decided for the 2013 National Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Championship.
On Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia, the University of Louisville Cardinals defeated the University of Wichita State Shockers 72-68 in one Final Four semi-final, while the University of Michigan Wolverines defeated the University of Syracuse Orange 61-56 in the other semi-final.
Both games were excellent. The Cardinals, led by 21 points from junior guard Russ Smith and 20 points from junior forward Luke Hancock, came back in the last few minutes after trailing to the Shockers for many stages of the game.
The Wolverines meanwhile hung on to the victory and survived a strong Orange finish. Three Wolverines (Tim Hardaway Jr., Glenn Robinson III and Mitch McGary) all scored in double digits.

Team Canada’s most valuable player after the first two days of the Paralympic Games in London is men’s wheelchair basketball player and Edmonton native Patrick Anderson.
The guy has been a complete workhorse for the first two days of the tournament. In Thursday’s win over Japan, Anderson had 32 points and 13 rebounds in a 68-53 win over Japan.
Then on Friday he recorded a triple double–29 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in a 70-54 win over Great Britain.

The 2012 Paralympic Games in London started today with the opening ceremonies.
Between now and September 9, more than a dozen Alberta natives will be representing Canada at the most prestigious international sports event for athletes with a disability.
Archer Kevin Evans of Calgary, might have the best chance of winning a medal. He is the 2007 and 2009 world champion.
Two cyclists meanwhile will also be in definite medal contention. Jaye Milley of Calgary is a World Cup champion and Brayden McDougall of Calgary has finished fourth three times at world championships.

Team Canada has qualified for the knockout round in women’s basketball at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Kim Smith of Surrey, British Columbia and Courtnay Pilypaitis of Orleans, Ontario scored 14 points each today as Canada defeated Brazil 79-73 in Group B action at the Basketball Arena in London.
With the win, the Canadians improved to 2-2 and eliminated the winless Brazilians who failed to qualify for the quarterfinals despite being ranked sixth in the world.
According to CTV, it was Canada’s first win in a decade against Brazil in women’s basketball.
Head Coach Allison McNeill was very pleased with her team’s performance.
“We had to attack the pressure. Once we did that we were okay. We were strong coming down the stretch.”
Team Canada built a 14 point lead by halftime, only to see the Brazilians battle back in the second half and outscore Canada 28-16 in the third quarter. In the fourth, the Canadians took control and hung on to their lead.
A major reason for the Canadian success was that they were able to perform well from long range. The team scored six three pointers.
Canada now plays Australia at 7:30 a.m. MT on Sunday. With a win and a Russia win over France, the Canadians would avoid the United States in the quarterfinals. There is also a possibility if Canada could advance with a 3-2 record, as for and against would then come into play.

Team Canada’s Olympic roster is set and there are 15 representing the province of Alberta out of the 264 athletes representing our nation.
Does that total seem rather low to you? That is only 5.7% of the total athletes representing Canada are Albertan. Should we be sending more? Possibly, but for now let’s celebrate the Albertans who are going.
Out of the 15, seven are from Calgary.
Kayaker Mark de Jonge has probably the best chance to medal. He finished in sixth place at the 2011 World Championships in the men’s 200m. De Jong will be joined by gymnast Nathan Gafuik, badminton player Grace Gao, track athlete Akeem Haynes, cyclist Monique Sullivan, swimmer Jillian Tyler (women’s 100m breaststroke), and Michael Tayler in kayaking slalom.

The University of Calgary Dinos have won the Canadian Interuniversity Sport National Championship in women’s hockey for the very first time.
On Sunday at the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, the Dinos defeated the University of Montreal Carabins 5-1.
It was a dominating game for the greatest woman to have ever played women’s hockey. Hayley Wickenheiser, the captain for Team Canada, scored two goals and two assists and was a +4.
Wickenheiser opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal from Iya Gavrilova at 16:46 of the first period, and then scored the game winning goal 1:18 later from Elana Lovell and Jenna Smith. The Dinos won despite being outshot 28-24.
Meanwhile in Halifax, Philip Scrubb scored 26 points and Tyson Hinz scored 20 points as the University of Carleton Ravens defeated the University of Alberta Golden Bears 86-67 in the CIS Men’s Basketball Championship. Carleton’s dominance in Canada when it comes to university basketball is amazing. They have now won eight times in ten years.

I’m not entirely sure how they did it, but the Dallas Mavericks are on top of the basketball world at the moment after stunning the mighty Miami Heat in six games this week.
It was sweet redemption for Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry, who were both there when the Heat came from behind to beat the Mavs in 2006, and it was a long time coming for Jason Kidd who finally got his hands on the trophy after 17 seasons in the league. So, now they all have more rings than LeBron James right?
Well…they now have one more championship than he does, but not necessarily more rings. That is, if Mavs owner Mark Cuban gets his way!
Cuban said after the win on the weekend that he might not get rings for his players because they are so old school, and that he felt like it was time to take things to another level, whatever that means. That’s not sitting well with the players though, and ESPN says they’ve all had a chance to try and talk Cuban out of whatever crazy thing he’s thinking of doing! (more…)

Gilbert’s “Decision”
Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert will have a couple of big decisions to make in just over a month, which he hopes will ease the pain of “The” Decision.
The Cavs won the NBA Draft Lottery on Tuesday night after the club’s first season without LeBron James, who left for Miami last summer. Represented on stage by Gilbert’s 14-year-old son Nick, Cleveland walked away with the first and fourth picks thanks to a trade with the LA Clippers back in February.
While the 2011 draft pool isn’t seen as being incredibly deep, Gilbert and the Cavaliers still have a pretty solid opportunity here to right a ship that was left in tatters by the departure of King James. (After the jump: Was the Lottery fixed? Plus some sick Taj Gibson dunks…) (more…)

Forget Vince Young – there are a couple of new Titans in Tennessee!
The NHL’s Nashville Predators and the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies aren’t quite “deep” into the playoffs in their respective leagues yet, but they’re both further than they’ve ever been before, simultaneously capturing the imagination of sports fans in the Volunteer state.
The Predators finally managed to shake their first-round jitters this season and win a playoff series, beating the Anaheim Ducks in six games about a week ago. Just five days later and a few hours down the road, the Memphis Grizzlies closed out their opening round series with the San Antonio Spurs, also in six games! Not only was it the first series win for the team that originated in Vancouver, it was also just the fourth time in NBA history that a number eight seed knocked off a number one!
Not a bad time to be a sports fan in Tennessee eh? (more…)

It’s going to be an interesting year for athletics at the University of North Dakota, as the NCAA prepares to come down hard on the school.
Are they in trouble for recruiting violations? That’s been happening a lot in college sports these days, but that isn’t it. Have players been selling UND stuff on eBay or accepting payments? Nope, that’s not it either. Well, does it have to do with performance enhancing drugs then? Nope!
It’s all in the name.
Until they’re no longer known as the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, the Grand Forks Herald reports the school won’t be allowed to host any playoff games or wear uniforms that display the team name or logo if they do make it to the postseason. ESPN says the NCAA has been trying for years now to rid the college ranks of offensive “American Indian nicknames, logos or mascots” and the UND’s deadline for a name change is mid-August of this year… (more…)

What a whirlwind day for Kobe Bryant on Wednesday.
It started with some bad news about his jersey, which was followed by some more bad news in the form of a massive fine for some trash talk gone awry. Thankfully for Kobe and the Lakers, he went back to doing his talking on the court by the evening, ending the day on a high note.
It was a tough start to Wednesday for Bryant, as he learned that his #24 jersey was no longer the most popular among NBA fans after two years on top. Much like his team, Kobe was going for the three-peat, but LeBron James stood in the way of that, taking over first place on the list, according to the LA Times. With the playoffs starting this weekend, the big question will be: if the Lakers make it out of the Western Conference, will LeBron James and his super popular jersey stand in Kobe’s way once again? “Heat of the Moment”
Losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers will drive a man to do crazy things, it seems.
The Detroit Pistons witnessed that first hand on Monday night when forward Charlie Villanueva completely lost the plot with just under six minutes to go in his team’s final home game of the regular season. Now, when I say he “lost the plot,” I mean it – responding to an elbow earlier in the game, Charlie V hit Cleveland’s Ryan Hollins with a “subtle jab to the groin” as Detroit Free Press writer Vince Ellis described it.
After being ushered away from the ensuing scrum, Villanueva tried to sneak his way back over to confront Hollins, but was dragged away once again by a teammate and a member of the coaching staff. It turns out it’s just not that easy for a 6-foot-11, 232-pound guy to be sneaky! (After the jump: Video of the altercation, plus a brutal Dunk Fail!) (more…)
