Happy Tuesday!

After a bit of a summer break, we’re back with another episode of 15 Minutes of Fame – this week on the show we’re talking Shea Weber, Rick Nash & the NHL, along with our expectations for the London Olympics.

In the GABBYs: Oscar Pistorius, the McLaren Racing Team, Ernie Els, the Brazilian soccer team, Dillon Donnelly & Chad Ochocino. The Punchline this week is the Olympic organizers!

China dominates in the pool on day one

The Chinese have made major strides in the sport of swimming. That wasn’t more evident than on day one of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Shiwen Ye, who is only 16 years of age, won the Olympic Gold medal in the women’s 400m individual medley in World Record time of 4:28.43. Meanwhile in the men’s 400m freestyle, Sun Yang won a Gold medal.

China leads the medal standings with six medals overall, one more medal than Italy and the United States.

In Saturday’s other high profile event, Kazakhstan’s Alexandre Vinokourov, at the age of 38, surprised many by winning Olympic Gold in the men’s cycling road race.

This week on 15MOF we discuss the latest news surrounding Oilers forward Taylor Hall, as well as another story that has left the team a bit red in the face. Also on the show – we discuss whether the Toronto Maple Leafs will be the next NHL team to fire a GM and we look at the latest “bounty” news from the NFL.

Beach volleyball players don’t need to wear bikinis at Olympics

Will beach volleyball continue to be a high profile sport for spectators at the 2012 Olympic Games in London? Maybe not.

According to the Associated Press, women no longer have to wear bikinis while competing in the most significant global sporting event on the planet.

Under new rules made this week by the International Volleyball Federation, players are now allowed to wear shorts and sleeve tops rather than bikinis to respect the cultural beliefs of many nations worldwide.

My question is, with the International Olympic Committee recognizing the cultural traditional beliefs of many middle Eastern nations, are they becoming less “hip” with today’s younger generation? This has been something they have desperately tried to accomplish with the recent inclusion of even more snowboarding and freestyle skiing events at the Olympic Winter Games. (more…)
