I’ll Have Another shockingly won’t compete at the Belmont

There will be no Triple Crown winner in 2012 after all.

Despite winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, I’ll Have Another was forced to pull out on Friday with a swollen tendon. One of the greatest Canadian-owned horses of all time also retired.

Affirmed in 1978 remains the last horse to win the Triple Crown. I’ll Have Another, who beat Bodemeister in two of the most compelling horse races I have ever seen to win the first two crowns in 2012. He was also the 4-5 favourite to win tomorrow, especially with the fact that Bodemeister was not going to be competing either.

Bodemeister drops out of the Belmont

I’ll Have Another’s chances of making horse racing history got a lot stronger today as it was announced by ESPN that Bodemeister will drop out of the Belmont.

Bodemeister had finished second to I’ll Have Another at the Preakness and Kentucky Derby in two of the most remarkable and exciting horse races I have ever seen. The news was confirmed by Bodemeister’s trainer Bob Baffert who nicknamed his horse after his son, Bode.

I’ll Have Another is capturing significant Canadian attention. The horse’s jockey, Mario Gutierrez spent six years in Vancouver, and its owner is J. Paul Reddam, a Windsor philosopher.
