Week 14 NFL Picks

Sunday, December 9th, 2012

Robert Griffin III (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

After Denver’s 26-13 win over Oakland Thursday night, I am now 120-72-1 on the season. Here are my picks for Sunday:

11am

Pittsburgh over San Diego–With Ben Roethlisberger back, the Steelers will inch closer to a playoff spot.

St. Louis over Buffalo–The Rams defense is underrated as they face a Bills team inconsistent offensively.

Cincinnati over Dallas–The tragedy for the Cowboys will be too tough for the team to overcome.

Cleveland over Kansas City–Like the Rams, the Browns have an underrated defense themselves.

Indianapolis over Tennessee–Too many good things are happening in Indy at the moment for me not to pick them.

Chicago over Minnesota–The Vikings played the Packers tough last week, but will struggle offensively against the Bears.

Weekend Sports Preview–December 8-9–NFL

Sunday, December 9th, 2012

Ben Roethlisberger (Wikimedia Commons)

Well folks. We are now in the down time of the sports calendar a little bit. My apologies for not writing with a high frequency this past week. I am currently doing a massive project for Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame which has taken up every ounce of energy I have had.

But I’m watching football today because I’m in the quarterfinals of my fantasy football playoffs, the premier fantasy football pool in Calgary.  Here are the games I’ll be watching:

Sunday–NFL–San Diego Chargers @ Pittsburgh Steelers–CBS–11am–Big Ben is back in the lineup for the Steelers after a shoulder and a rib injury. At 7-5, the Steelers delivered an impressive road win last week in Baltimore. As for the Chargers, there were reports this week that Norv Turner would be fired with the team currently at 4-8.

Sunday–NFL–Dallas Cowboys @ Cincinnati Bengals–FOX–11am–The Cowboys received a tragedy this week as linebacker Jerry Brown died in a car accident. Defensive lineman Josh Brent was charged with intoxicated manslaughter. The Cowboys  are 6-6, while the Bengals are 7-5.

Quarterbacks go down with injuries in Week 10

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

Michael Vick (Wikimedia Commons)

Many football fans have been cringing over the last couple of days with the enormous amount of injuries at the quarterback position since Sunday.

The list includes Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Michael Vick of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears and Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers.

Cutler, Smith and Vick all suffered concussions while Roethlisberger went down with a shoulder injury. Unless Cutler and Smith make significant improvements, next Monday’s prime time game featuring the 7-2 Bears and 6-2-1 49ers, will see Jason Campbell versus Colin Kaepernick at the helm. Yikes!

Getting back to the 49ers, they tied this week at 24 against St. Louis on Sunday. It was the first game that ended in a tie since 2008 when Philadelphia and Cincinnati tied at 13. From the San Francisco-St. Louis game Sunday, ESPN was reporting last night that many players didn’t realize the game could end in a tie. It made Donovan McNabb not look so dumb after all.

Weekend Sports Preview–NFL Playoffs, NHL & NBA

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

Tim Tebow (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)

Wildcard weekend takes place this weekend as the NFL Playoffs commence.

The game that has the most intrigue will be Sunday afternoon when the Denver Broncos host the Pittsburgh Steelers (CBS, 2:30pm).

On paper, all of the signs lead to Pittsburgh. The Steelers, at 12-4, had a for and against ratio of +98, compared to Denver’s for and against ratio of -81.

But the Steelers have significant injury woes. Running back Rashard Mendenhall is out with a torn ACL. Safety Ryan Clark is sitting out this week due to a health precaution. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be playing injured with a bad ankle, and Big Ben has not looked great in the pocket since getting hurt against the Cleveland Browns on December 8.

The Broncos meanwhile, aren’t playing great football, but at 8-8 won the AFC West. It has been a very interesting season for Tim Tebow, and I don’t think Tebowmania is over just yet. But a major reason why Denver won the AFC West was because of their strong team defense. In half their games, they held their opposition to under 20 points.  The Broncos just might have what it takes to pull off the upset, in a very low scoring game.

Steelers receive big blows heading into postseason

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Rashard Mendenhall (Tom Cool, Wikimedia Commons)

If the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to do some damage in the postseason, it will be without running back Rashard Mendenhall and safety Ryan Clark.

Mendenhall tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Pittsburgh’s 13-9 win over the Cleveland Browns. The injury is going to require surgery. Mendenhall ran for 928 yards on 228 carries for nine touchdowns and also added 154 receiving yards. With the loss of Mendenhall, the Steelers will now have to rely on backup Isaac Redman, who ran for 92 yards against the Browns, but also had two fumbles.

The Steelers will also go into Denver Sunday for the AFC Wildcard matchup without the services of Ryan Clark, but it looks like it will be for one game only. Clark has a sickle-cell trait that is aggravated when playing in high elevations, so playing in Denver becomes significantly awkward.

Also, on the quarterback side of things, Ben Roethlisberger will be playing with an ankle injury.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 26 & 27–Grey Cup, NHL, NFL, World Cup Skiing

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

The 99th Grey Cup gets under way tomorrow at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver with a game between the B.C. Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (TSN, 4:30pm).

The Lions are trying to become the first team since 1994 to win the Grey Cup on home soil. But they will have a lot of Edmonton Eskimo fans cheering against them after head coach Wally Buono’s ridiculous comment last week of “I hate Edmonton.”

The Lions have the Grey Cup MVP in Travis Lulay, while the Blue Bombers’ have the league’s top defensive player in Jovon Johnson.

There have been some interesting storylines heading into the Grey Cup. Blue Bombers’ defensive end Odelle Willis tweeted this past week how he wanted to go home to American Thanksgiving rather than practicing on Thursday, and said “a couple of more days and I’m out of this hoe.”

Also, hall of famers, Angelo Mosca and Joe Kapp got into a fight at an alumni luncheon in Vancouver after the two discussed a play in 1963 when Mosca’s hit knocked Lions’ running back Willie Fleming out of the game.

Getting back to the Blue Bombers and Lions, the Blue Bombers beat the Lions twice this year, 25-20 on July 28 in Winnipeg and 30-17 on August 13 in Vancouver.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Moreno and Cassel are out for the season

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Knowshon Moreno (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)

The AFC West just got significantly more interesting on Monday when it was announced that two key players within the division will miss the rest of the season due to injuries.

The Denver Broncos have announced that running back Knowshon Moreno is out for the year with a torn ACL and that Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Matt Cassel is out for the year with a hand injury. Both injuries occurred in Denver’s 17-10 win over Kansas City on Sunday.

The upset of the week came in Philadelphia, as it appears the Eagles’ season is finally over at 3-6. On Sunday, Cardinals’ quarterback Jon Skelton threw three outstanding touchdown passes–two to Larry Fitzgerald and one to Early Doucet in the 21-17 victory.

There were also five very interesting games yesterday.

The New Orleans Saints defeated the Atlanta Falcons 26-23 in overtime. Falcons’ head coach Mike Smith is getting criticized for gambling on fourth and one and the Falcons having the ball on their own 29 yard line. I suggest the criticism is utter nonsense. Michael Turner is one of the best running backs in the game today and was just stopped by the Saints’ defense. New Orleans was probably going to score anyways because of the ridiculous NFL overtime rules! With the win, New Orleans takes a stranglehold in the NFC South at 7-3, while Atlanta falls to 5-4.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 5 & 6–NHL, NCAA, CFL, NFL & World Golf Championship

Nikolai Khabibulin (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

From every angle possible, it is a great time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. The kids are producing. The veterans are producing. The entire team is buying into Tom Renney’s defensive-minded system and Nikolai Khabibulin has been completely spectacular.

On Saturday night, the Oilers (8-2-2), visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena (CBC, 8pm). Edmonton is currently tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for first place in the Western Conference. They have also only given up 18 goals all season long, five fewer than second place Dallas at 23 goals. The recent play of Khabibulin led Brad May of Rogers Sportsnet to say last night that Khabibulin right now “is the best goaltender in the NHL.”

The Coyotes meanwhile are trying to get to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third year in a row. The last two seasons they have lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. So far in 2011-12, they are 6-4-2, and tied with the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings for fifth place in the Western Conference.

The Coyotes’ top player this season is Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native Ray Whitney, who leads Phoenix with five goals, seven assists.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Rams deliver biggest surprise on Sunday

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Steven Jackson (John Martinez Pavliga, Wikimedia Commons)

It was quite the weekend on the St. Louis sports scene.

On Friday night the Cardinals won their eleventh World Series and on Sunday, the Rams delivered the most significant upset in the NFL.

Steven Jackson ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns as the Rams defeated the New Orleans Saints 31-21. For Jackson, it was the third most rushing yards he had in a game. He ran for 179 yards in a 24-21 win over Jacksonville on October 30, 2005 and 161 yards in a 31-27 loss against the Atlanta Falcons on December 28.

For the Rams, it was their first win of the year (1-6), and it was a shocking win over a New Orleans Saints (5-3) team that just up 62 points the weekend before.

The comeback of the weekend came in Baltimore, as the Ravens came back from a 24-3 deficit to beat the Arizona Cardinals 30-27. Running back Ray Rice had three second half touchdowns to lead the Baltimore comeback.

Another outstanding performance yesterday came in Pittsburgh, as Ben Roethlisberger threw for 365 yards in a 25-17 win over the New England Patriots in the only game of the weekend that featured two teams above .500. The Steelers improve to 6-2, while the Patriots fall to 5-2.

Weekend Sports Preview–October 29-30–NHL, CFL, ISU, NFL

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

It is an absolute marvelous time to be an Edmonton sports fan. The Oilers are in first place and the Edmonton Eskimos (10-6) can clinch first place in the Western Division with a win over the British Columbia Lions (9-7) at B.C. Place tonight (TSN, 8:00PM).

So when was the last time the Eskimos finished first in the West? You have to go all the way back to 2003 when they finished with a record of 13-5 and beat the Montreal Alouettes 34-22 to win the Grey Cup in Regina.

If the Eskimos hope to finish first in the West, they’ll need to play a full sixty minutes on the road, something they failed to do last week in Toronto. Edmonton once had a 31-3 lead but allowed the Argonauts to make things interesting in the final quarter, as the Boatmen scored the last three touchdowns.

If the Eskimos do lose, they’ll need to beat Saskatchewan next week and hope Montreal beats British Columbia to finish first in the West.

A key to the Eskimos tonight will be Ricky Ray and Jerome Messam, who were both named as CFL Players of the week– Ray was offensive player of the week, and Messam was the top Canadian. If they can combine for 150 yards rushing, it puts the Eskimos in an excellent position to win.

Super Bowl Weekend Sports Preview–February 5-6

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Super Bowl XLV takes place Sunday. So, there’s no better time than to do a breakdown of the NFC Champion Green Bay Packers and the AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

Both the Steelers and Packers have rich histories in the NFL. Green Bay won the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968, and then with Brett Favre leading the way, Green Bay knocked off New England in Super Bowl XXXI in 1997.

The Steelers have won six times. Led by Terry Bradshaw, they won four times in six years from 1975-1980. Then over the last decade, Pittsburgh defeated Seattle 21-10 in 2006 and Arizona 27-23 in 2009.

Super Bowl XLV should be the highest attended game in Super Bowl history. A total of 103,985 fans watched the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 in 1980 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Dallas’s Cowboys Stadium has a capacity of 111,000, and even if the weather continues to be poor in Texas, expect a sell out.

Where should Ben Roethlisberger rank among Pittsburgh’s greatest athletes?

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Ben Roethlisberger (Wikimedia Commons)

If the Pittsburgh Steelers win Sunday, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will join elite company in the National Football League.

Roethlisberger will join the likes of Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Troy Aikman and Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to win three Super Bowls. He has 22502 passing yards in his career, the 2004 Rookie of the Year and has the fourth highest winning percentage (.704) among quarterbacks with a minimum of 90 starts in NFL history.

So where does he rank among the best athletes in Pittsburgh history? I don’t think he should rank very high on the list. Why? Well, even though Roethlisberger has won two Super Bowls, he’s never been the Super Bowl MVP, has never been the NFL MVP, and doesn’t hold any real significant NFL records.

Here are athletes that have made their mark on the Pittsburgh sports scene that have more impressive resumes than Big Ben.

Polamalu’s Hair: Week Twenty-One Notes

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Hair We Go!

When the current NFL season started back in September, there were 32 teams getting ready for what they hoped (realistically or not) would be a championship season.

Heading into the last weekend of January only two teams remain though, as the Pittsburgh Steelers get set to face the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, Texas. Now, if you think the big story here is Ben Roethlisberger vs. Aaron Rodgers, I regret to inform you that you are absolutely wrong.

No, there is a much bigger battle being waged on February 6th: That would be the one between Head & Shoulders and Suave.

That’s right folks, the flowing locks of Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu (our hero here in the football division of Kerrzy’s Notebook) will go “head to head” with the golden mane of Green Bay’s Clay Matthews on that fateful Sunday. (more…)

Weekend Sports Preview–January 22-23

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Samantha Stosur (Wikimedia Commons)

I’m in the process of sleeping considerably during the day because there is outstanding tennis at night. The Australian Open and the National Football League’s Conference Championships will dominate my television viewing this weekend.

Here is what I’ll be watching:

Saturday–1am–Australian Open–(5) Samantha Stosur-Australia vs. (25) Petra Kvitova-Czech Republic–Women’s 3rd Round–TSN2–Stosur, the finalist of the 2010 French Open, is the last remaining Australian on the women’s side. Even though Stosur isn’t very big in stature, (5’9″, 140 pounds), she has very muscular legs and is very fit on the court. Her opponent Saturday is rising Czech star Petra Kvitova, who has defeated Caroline Wozniacki and Nadia Petrova in the past year.

Saturday–5pm–NHL–Anaheim Ducks @ Montreal Canadiens–CBC-In a battle of two teams currently in playoff position, the Canadiens (26-17-4) host the Ducks (26-20-4). Anaheim is currently sixth in the west and Montreal is seventh in the east. The Canadiens though are battling the Boston Bruins for first place in the Northeast Division. They’re currently only three points back. The Ducks’ best player this year has been Corey Perry, who has 50 points in 50 games. The Habs, meanwhile, continue to get sparkling goaltending from Carey Price, who has a 2.34 goals against average with four shutouts, and oh, yeah, he’ll be playing in the NHL All-Star Game in Carolina next weekend.
