Oldershaw finished in third place in the men’s 1000m canoe race with a time of 3:48.502. Sebastian Brendel of Germany won the Olympic gold medal with a time of 3:47.176 and David Cal Figueroa of Spain with a time of 3:48.053.
Oldershaw got off to a bit of a slow start, but had an excellent final 500m where he was able to pass Vadim Menkov of Uzbekistan and Mathieu Goubel of France.
Oldershaw was a third generation Canadian and fifth Oldershaw family member to represent Canada at an Olympic Games. Mark’s grandfather Bert represented Canada at the 1948 Olympic Games in London where he finished in fifth place in the C-2 1000m with William Stevenson. That was the last time London hosted the Olympic Games.
Bert is a member of the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.
Canada now sits in twelfth place in the medal standings with one gold medal, four silver medals and eight bronze medals.
