Flames name Gelinas assistant coach

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

The Calgary Flames announced on Thursday the hiring of former Calgary Flame and Edmonton Oiler Martin Gelinas as an assistant coach to Bob Hartley.

Gelinas also played for the Quebec Nordiques, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators and Florid Panthers. He racked up 309 goals, 351 assists and 660 points in 1273 games from 1988-2008.

Drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round, seventh overall in 1988, Gelinas was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in the most controversial trade in sports history–the one that saw Wayne Gretzky move from Edmonton to Los Angeles.

Gelinas also scored four very memorable goals in his playing career. In 2002, he scored the game winning goal in game six of the Eastern Conference Final for the Carolina Hurricanes as they eliminated the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Canadiens hire Therrien as head coach again–Will Crawford go to Edmonton?

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

It appears to be Groundhog Day in Montreal.

The Canadiens have hired Michel Therrien as their next coach, replacing the English speaking only Randy Cunneyworth. Therrien has coached in the NHL for seven seasons–(2000-03 with Montreal and 2005-09 with Pittsburgh), and posted a record of 212-182-68.

According to Hockey Night in Canada, Therrien and Marc Crawford were the finalists for the Canadiens job, and if Therrien got the Montreal job, Crawford would be considered a candidate in Edmonton. Therrien and Crawford were also probably not number one on the Montreal list. The Canadiens had Bob Hartley high on their chart, but he went to Calgary instead.

Bob Hartley goes to Calgary and not Montreal

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

The Calgary Flames have hired Bob Hartley as the team’s next head coach, replacing Brent Sutter.

Hartley was originally rumored to go to the Montreal Canadiens, but many media sources earlier in the week flat out were incorrect with their poor reporting.

Hartley has had tremendous success as a head coach. He has an overall record of 329-226-95 in eight seasons coaching the Colorado Avalanche and Atlanta Thrashers from 1998-2008. In 2001, he led the Avalanche to a Stanley Cup Championship over the New Jersey Devils and in 2007 led the Thrashers to their only playoff appearance in franchise history.

This past season he led the ZSC Lions to a Swiss championship and last week was an advisor to the Shawinigan Cataractes in their Memorial Cup Championship.  Hartley was also under contract to the Lions for another season, and the Lions were reportedly very disappointed that their star coach had   decided to join the NHL. But the Flames and Hartley were able to come to an agreement on a release last night and Hartley was able to sign a three year contract.
