Series have shifted in three NBA matchups

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

James Harden (Derral Chen, Wikimedia Commons)

When the New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder went up 3-0 in their respective series, it just seemed inevitable before they would close out the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets respectively.

However times have changed. In the Thunder/Rockets series, Oklahoma City just seems completely out of sync without point guard Russell Westbrook, and it is clear that James Harden is feeling more and more comfortable knocking down three-pointers, as he did last night when he recorded seven shots from beyond the arc in a 107-100 win over Oklahoma City.

All of a sudden, the Rockets are only down 3-2 in the series and have the momentum heading into Houston for game six.

Meanwhile in the New York/Boston series, the Celtics beat the Knicks 92-86 last night to pull within one game in that series (3-2 Knicks). The Celtics are showing great experience at the moment. Kevin Garnett does not seem like a player who is about to retire. Garnett delivered a double double last night (16 points and 18 rebounds).

Bruins must play the Senators Sunday night

Sunday, April 28th, 2013

About a week ago while watching Sportscentre, TSN’s Darren Dutchyshen disagreed with the NHL’s plan to have the Boston Bruins play the Ottawa Senators this evening. He recommended that the game be cancelled rather than rescheduled because of the traumatic events in Boston this month.

In the NBA, a game between the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers was cancelled, and the game would have had seeding implications if played. However the NBA thought it was in their best interest, just to cancel the game.

However, I am very pleased to see that the game between Ottawa and Boston is played tonight. The Bruins  will win the Northeast Division with a win, and the Senators will move from eighth to seventh with a victory. Not to mention, but the game has huge implications for thousands of hockey pools across the globe.

Injuries a major story in the NBA Playoffs

Sunday, April 28th, 2013

Russell Westbrook (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

A significant story in the 2013 NBA Playoffs isn’t who is playing, but who is not. Prior to the playoffs, it was well known the Los Angeles Lakers would not have Kobe Bryant, the Boston Celtics would not have Rajon Rondo and the Chicago Bulls would not have Derrick Rose.

However, the injuries continue to mount in the postseason as well. In the Western Conference quarterfinal, the Golden State Warriors lost their star center David Lee with a hip flexor for the postseason. Lee led the NBA this year with 56 double doubles. Then in game two of the Western Conference quarterfinal, Oklahoma City Thunder all-star point guard Russell Westbrook injured his knee after having surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear.

Meanwhile, the injuries in Los Angeles continues to mount for the Lakers, with not only Bryant, but Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jodie Meeks out as well. In game three’s loss to San Antonio, the Lakers were forced to play with their fifth and sixth ranked guards! Yikes!

Saturday, April 27th, 2013

The Edmonton Oil Kings are one win away from returning to the Western Hockey League’s Championship Final. On Sunday, the Oil Kings will play the Calgary Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome in game six of the Eastern Conference Final, leading the series 3-2.

On Friday night in Edmonton, the Oil Kings had a similar start in game five of the series to what they had in game four. Complete dominance. The Oil Kings scored three first period goals en route to a 5-1 victory. Game six can be seen on Sunday afternoon on Shaw at 4:00 p.m.

Weekend Sports Preview–April 20-21–NHL, NBA, ATP & MLB

Saturday, April 20th, 2013

It looks more and more like the Edmonton Oilers will not make the postseason in 2013. However, there is a still a mathematical chance after their impressive 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.

The Oilers played a complete hockey game Friday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Jordan Eberle  scored one goal and two assists, while Justin Schultz and Magnus Paajarvi had multi-point games.

The Oilers are now eight points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets with five games to go in the season. The next game on their schedule will be Sunday night against the Anaheim Ducks (Sportsnet, 6:00 p.m.). It is basically simple. Their remaining five games, of which four are at home, are mandatory for the Oilers to win.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 17 & 18–CFL, NFL, CIS, NCAA & NBA

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Once again this weekend I’ll be watching four kinds of football from both side of the border.

Th most interesting matchup will be the Western Final on Sunday afternoon between the Calgary Stampeders (12-6) and the British Columbia Lions (13-5) (2:30pm, TSN). This week there has been more drama in the Stampeders’ dressing room than an entire week of the Young and the Restless, and for that I give the Lions the advantage.

Travis Lulay is expected to be at the top of his game and the Lions are well rested. My only concern however is that it has been a while since they played a very meaningful game, so it will be interesting to see how they come out mentally.

Heat may be better in 2012-13

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Ray Allen (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The Miami Heat were a great team in the National Basketball Association this past year. They may be even better next season.

On Wednesday, the Heat, the reigning NBA Champions, confirmed the acquisitions of Ray Allen from the Boston Celtics and Rashard Lewis from the New Orleans Hornets. Both are longtime veterans in the NBA and were teammates in Seattle from 2002-2007.

Allen will receive $3 million this season, while Lewis will receive $15 million.

Lewis was traded from Washington to New Orleans with a  second round draft pick for Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza on June 20, but Lewis was dropped from the Hornets ten days later as he was put on waivers.

Lewis had a career high 22.4 points with the Seattle Supersonics in 2007, but has seen his production drop over the years because of knee injuries.

Allen meanwhile was part of the big three in Boston alongside Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and won an NBA Finals in 2008. Last season he averaged 14.2 points.

NBA Draft recap

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Anthony Davis (Ian McCormick, Wikimedia Commons)

The New Orleans Hornets have drafted power forward Anthony Davis with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Davis could be considered one of the best players in quite some time heading into the NBA on the defensive side of the court.

The leader of the Kentucky Wildcats can definitely be compared to Ben Wallace or Dennis Rodman.

At 6’10″, his wingspan was totally unbelievable. He had 4.6 blocks per game in leading the Wildcats to a NCAA Championship this past season.

At number eight, the Toronto Raptors went with shooting guard Terrence Ross out of the University of Washington. It’s hard to determine how good Ross can be because he didn’t play in the NCAA Tournament this past year.

Three Canadians were also chosen. At number nineteen, the Orlando Magic selected power forward Andrew Nicholson from Mississauga, Ontario out of the University of St. Bonaventure. At number 51, the Boston Celtics selected small forward Kris Joseph of Montreal out of Syracuse and at number    60, the Los Angeles Lakers selected center Robert Sacre of Vancouver out of Gonzaga.

Heat knock off Celtics to win Eastern Conference Final

Sunday, June 10th, 2012

The Miami Heat have advanced to the Eastern Conference Final by beating the Boston Celtics 101-88 on Saturday night in south Florida. The Heat won the best out of seven Eastern Conference Final 4-3 and will play the Oklahoma City Thunder.

LeBron James led the Heat attack with a double double 31 points and 12 rebounds.

James, was solid but the Heat had great performances from Shane Battier and Chris Bosh, who were a combined 7-for-13 from downtown. Dwyane Wade also added 23 points.

The Heat are headed to their second consecutive NBA Finals. They lost last year in six games to the Dallas Mavericks. This is the third time the Heat have qualified for the NBA Finals. They beat the Mavericks 4-2 in the NBA Finals.

Weekend Sports Preview–June 9 & 10–Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Playoffs, French Open, Equestrian, Euro 2012, LPGA Championship & MLB

Drew Doughty (Wikimedia Commons)

The Los Angeles Kings are one win away from capturing their very first Stanley Cup. On Saturday night the Kings will play the New Jersey Devils (CBC, 6pm) leading the Finals 3-1.

The Devils meanwhile are taking a game-by-game approach according to all-star goaltender Martin Brodeur. In game four, the Devils had a solid third period and stayed alive with a 3-1 win. For the Devils to make the Stanley Cup Finals interesting, they will need a solid performance from Ilya Kovalchuk, who only has one goal in four games so far, and that one went into an empty net.

The Kings are getting great production from Drew Doughty, who leads all blueliners with 14 playof points.

One player though nobody is talking about is New Jersey’s defenceman Bryce Salvador who has 13 points. Just how unexpected has Salvador’s point production been? Well his NHL regular season career high came in 2009 when he had 16 points in 76 games!

James leads Heat to a seventh game

Friday, June 8th, 2012

LeBron James (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The Miami Heat were in a do or die situation Thursday night and their star player came through in flying colours.

LeBron James scored 45 points and 15 rebounds as the Heat defeated the Boston Celtics 98-79 to tie the Eastern Conference Final 3-3.

James played 44 of a possible 48 minutes and was a +22 while on the court. Game seven will take place Saturday in Miami with the winner playing the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals.

The Heat dominated the Celtics in the first half, outscoring them 55-42. Celtics’ forward Brandon Bass committed a foul with three tenths of a second left on Dwyane Wade that led to two Heat free throws.

In other NBA news, the Toronto Raptors announced on Thursday they will be shopping their number one pick, eighth overall for a proven scorer to compliment Andrea Bargnani. Two players the team is interested in are Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies and Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia 76ers. It is also expected they will make free agent all-star point guard Steve Nash a strong offer. Meanwhile, center Jonas Valanciunas, the Raptors’ first round pick, 5th overall, is expected to join the team next  season.

Thunder advance to NBA Finals

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

Kevin Durant (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The Oklahoma City Thunder are advancing to the NBA Finals after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 107-99 in game six of the Western Conference Finals.

Kevin Durant scored 34 points and recorded 14 rebounds.

The Thunder, like the Boston Celtics were once down 2-0 in the conference finals, but have roared back since. The Celtics can close out the Miami Heat on Thursday night.

The Spurs dominated the first half and the Thunder dominated the second half, outscoring the Spurs 59-36. The Thunder had four different players recording a key second half three point shot. Durant, Derek Fisher, Thabo Sefolosha and James Harden all scored key baskets from beyond the arc.

The Spurs meanwhile lost four consecutive games after winning twenty consecutive games. The Thunder meanwhile were 2-0 against the Celtics this year and 1-1 against the Heat.

This will be the fourth time in the history of the Seattle Supersonics/Oklahoma City Thunder that the franchise has advanced to the NBA Finals. Their only championship came in 1979 when they beat the Washington Bullets.

Road team finally wins in NBA Conference Finals

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

James Harden (Justin Smith, Wikimedia Commons)

A team playing away from home has finally won in the third round of the 2012 NBA Playoffs.

Last night in San Antonio, Kevin Durant scored 27 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the San Antonio Spurs 108-103 to take a 3-2 series lead in the Western Conference Finals.

Even though Durant and Russell Westbrook combined for 50 points, I felt the best player on the Thunder in game five was James Harden. Playing with his hockey beard, Harden scored 20 points and was a +24 on the court.

So far in the conference finals, the home team had won the first eight games.  In the Eastern Conference Final, the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics have each won their first two home games heading into game five in south Florida tonight.

Sunday night in Boston, the Celtics beat the Heat 93-91 in overtime as point guard Rajon Rondo scored 15 points and 15 assists for a double double. As Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are all getting up in age, this is becoming more and more Rondo’s team. Still for the Heat to win the series, they will need to do a better job defending Allen who had four three pointers in game four.

Weekend Sports Preview–June 2-3–Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Playoffs, Track & Field, IndyCar & French Open

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

Dylan Armstrong (Wilson Wong, Wikimedia Commons)

This weekend is a big tuneup for Canadian Olympic medal hopeful Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, British Columbia. The reigning Diamond League Champion is set to compete in the 2012 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon (Saturday, NBC, 1pm) , a major track and field event in Armstrong’s preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games in  London.

Armstrong will also be competing this weekend against a very deep field–reigning Olympic Gold medallist Tomasz Majewski of Poland, and Americans Ryan Whiting (World Indoor Champion), Christian Cantwell (2009 World Champion) and Reese Hoffa (2007 World Champion). Hoffa has the seasonal best throw of 21.73m.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday–ATP–French Open Tennis– Men’s Third Round–(13) Juan Monaco–ARG vs. (19) Milos Raonic–CAN–9am–TSN–For the first time in his career, Canadian Milos Raonic has advanced past the first round of the French Open. In his win Thursday, Raonic defeated American Jesse Levine 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. Levine, a native of Ottawa, has publicly stated he considers himself 100% American, making him a present day Greg Rusedski (represented Great Britain despite being born in Montreal), as a player that turned away completely from his Canadian roots. Monaco will be the slight favourite due to his experience on the clay. He has been on the ATP Tour now since 2004 and the clay is his best surface.
