It was 2011 the last time we spoke and much has happened since then! This week on the show we recap the best and worst moments of the year from the world of sports, we talk about Sean Avery getting waived ahead of the Winter Classic, plus we recap the big game. Also: we’ve got a theory about the success of Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators and we look at the main event at UFC 141 and tell you which fighter retired after losing.

This week on 15 Minutes of Fame: the Edmonton Eskimos are off to the CFL’s West Final after a dominating performance against the Calgary Stampeders, but can they beat the Lions? On the ice – we look into the 1-3-1 controversy and the Milan Lucic hit on Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. As well, the UFC makes its debut on FOX and in boxing, Manny Pacquiao wins a close (and controversial) one over Juan Manuel Marquez.

The passing of Wade Belak on Wednesday in Toronto sent an all-too-familiar shockwave through the hockey community.
Indeed, 2011 has been a challenging year for the NHL.
It all started on January 1st, when Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby fell victim to a blindside hit during the Winter Classic. He played part of his team’s next game, but hasn’t played since. It’s now eight months later and he still hasn’t been able to shake his concussion symptoms.
A few weeks after the hit on Crosby, Marc Savard suffered another concussion. The Boston Bruins playmaker became the face of a growing problem in the NHL when he was blindsided by Penguins forward Matt Cooke in March of 2010. He didn’t play again until December of that year, and after this latest concussion, it doesn’t look like he’ll ever play again.
Things took a much darker turn a few months later in May when NY Rangers tough guy Derek Boogaard, who had missed most of the season with a concussion, was found dead in his apartment. It was later determined that he died of an accidental overdose of painkillers and alcohol. READ MORE… (more…)
It was quite an end to the NHL season on Wednesday night in Vancouver, riots aside, with the Boston Bruins providing a huge upset at Rogers Arena to capture the 2011 Stanley Cup.
Now, when I say “upset,” it’s not so much that the Bruins beat the Canucks, it’s how they did it. Did anyone honestly predict that Boston, who had scored three times in Vancouver over the first three games there, would come out and put up a four-spot in game seven? I certainly didn’t!
One thing that wasn’t a surprise at all was the awarding of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP to Bruins goalie Tim Thomas – he earned his second shutout of the final in the deciding game and ends up with a 1.14 goals against average against Vancouver. He was absolutely ridiculous during the playoffs and many people were convinced that he would win MVP honors regardless of the outcome on Wednesday.
Here’s the bad news though: that’s it for the season! We’ve got the NHL awards coming up, the draft a few days later, free agency kicks off a week after that and then we’re into the dog days!
Before we completely close the book on the season that was though, I feel it’s only fitting that we look back at the top 10 goals (as chosen by me) of the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs… (more…)
