Blackhawks and Blues win overtime games Tuesday

The opening night of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs saw two games go into extra time.

In Chicago, Bryan Bickell scored with 3:35 left in the first overtime as the Blackhawks defeated the Minnesota Wild 2-1, while in St. Louis, Kings’ goaltender Jonathan Quick gave the puck away to Alexander Steen, who scored his second of the game as the Blues defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1.

In other action, the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1.

The biggest story of the night probably came in Chicago, where NASCAR star Danica Patrick scored from center ice during the second intermission. Why was Patrick and her boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Junior in Chicago, rather than preparing for the weekend’s NASCAR race at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. I’m not a NASCAR expert, but I wouldn’t take Patrick or Stenhouse for the Aaron’s 499. I think Daytona 500 champion Jimmie Johnson is licking his chops by the fact his competitors are taking some leisure time no where near the race track.

Overtime magic continues in playoffs

An interesting theme so far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs  have been the number of games that have gone into an extra period.

The number is currently seven after three more overtime games on Saturday. Washington beat Boston 2-1 on an overtime winner by Nicklas Backstrom yesterday afternoon. Then last night, Chris Neil scored the overtime winner for the Senators in a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers and then Bryan Bickell scored the overtime winner (his first of two on the night) in a 4-3 Chicago win over Phoenix.

The Sens/Rangers series is definitely starting to heat up. Last night at Madison Square Garden, Senators defenceman Matt Carkner went after Rangers’ Brian Boyle and basically showed him who is boss by delivering a dozen consecutive punches at his face after Boyle checked Zack Smith. The altercation was payback for the Senators because in Game 1 Boyle had gone after and attacked Norris Trophy favourite Erik Karlsson. Carkner, and Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky got game misconducts from the altercation. Dubinsky was ejected for being the third man in.

Around the Rinks: NHL Playoffs – Top 10 Goals of 2011

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

It was quite an end to the NHL season on Wednesday night in Vancouver, riots aside, with the Boston Bruins providing a huge upset at Rogers Arena to capture the 2011 Stanley Cup.

Now, when I say “upset,” it’s not so much that the Bruins beat the Canucks, it’s how they did it. Did anyone honestly predict that Boston, who had scored three times in Vancouver over the first three games there, would come out and put up a four-spot in game seven? I certainly didn’t!

One thing that wasn’t a surprise at all was the awarding of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP to Bruins goalie Tim Thomas – he earned his second shutout of the final in the deciding game and ends up with a 1.14 goals against average against Vancouver. He was absolutely ridiculous during the playoffs and many people were convinced that he would win MVP honors regardless of the outcome on Wednesday.

Here’s the bad news though: that’s it for the season! We’ve got the NHL awards coming up, the draft a few days later, free agency kicks off a week after that and then we’re into the dog days!

Before we completely close the book on the season that was though, I feel it’s only fitting that we look back at the top 10 goals (as chosen by me) of the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs… (more…)
