The New Jersey Devils have forced game six in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Saturday night in New Jersey, the Devils defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1, but still trail the Stanley Cup Finals 3-2.

Martin Brodeur made 25 saves, while Bryce Salvador and Zach Parise both scored on Kings’ netminder Jonathan Quick.

Parise opened the scoring for the Devils on the power play after Quick waltzed out of his net inappropriately to play the puck. It was the Devils’ first power play goal of the series.

After Justin Williams tied the game for Los Angeles, the Devils got a game winning goal by Salvador from the point, but the replay still looks like David Clarkson tipped the puck in. Either way, Clarkson did a solid job in getting in the way of Quick’s line of sight.

Either way, the Kings are the team with the pressure right now, even though they are one win away from winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Game six is Monday night back in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Kings are one win away from capturing their very first Stanley Cup. On Saturday night the Kings will play the New Jersey Devils (CBC, 6pm) leading the Finals 3-1.

The Devils meanwhile are taking a game-by-game approach according to all-star goaltender Martin Brodeur. In game four, the Devils had a solid third period and stayed alive with a 3-1 win. For the Devils to make the Stanley Cup Finals interesting, they will need a solid performance from Ilya Kovalchuk, who only has one goal in four games so far, and that one went into an empty net.

The Kings are getting great production from Drew Doughty, who leads all blueliners with 14 playof points.

One player though nobody is talking about is New Jersey’s defenceman Bryce Salvador who has 13 points. Just how unexpected has Salvador’s point production been? Well his NHL regular season career high came in 2009 when he had 16 points in 76 games!

The New Jersey Devils tied the Eastern Conference Final at two against the New York Rangers on Monday night and Martin Brodeur went into the record books.

Martin Brodeur recorded his fourth assist to set an NHL record for most assists by a goaltender in one Stanley Cup Playoffs, breaking a record set by a number of goaltenders including Glenn Healy. Brodeur’s assist cam with 1:29 left on a goal by Zach Parise. Brodeur’s strong puck handling skills was a major reason why Canada won Gold at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

The Devils won the game 4-1 on two third period goals by Parise.

The Devils and Rangers played a very physical contest, the most physical in any game of the series so far. Ryan McDonagh of the Rangers fought Calder Trophy nominee Adam Henrique in the first period with the Devils up 1-0 on a goal by Bryce Salvador. Game five is Wednesday night.
