Chiefs draft Eric Fisher first overall in NFL draft

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

One thing was clear on Thursday night at the 2013 NFL Draft in New York City. General managers were not afraid to draft offensive linemen in the first round.

A total of nine offensive linemen were drafted in the first round on Thursday, including three of the first four picks.

With the first overall pick, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted offensive tackle Eric Fisher from Central Michigan. What is interesting about Fisher is that he was the second smallest of all first round offensive lineman taken at 297 pounds. The pick was surprising because Central Michigan participates in the lesser known Mid-American Conference.

Raiders decide on a different quarterback in 2013

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Matt Flynn (Gabriel Cervantes, Wikimedia Commons)

The Oakland Raiders have decided to go with a different quarterback in 2013. In will come Matt Flynn, who backed up Russell Wilson last year in Seattle, and out is Carson Palmer, who was acquired by the Arizona Cardinals in a deal involving draft picks.

Meanwhile, Kevin Kolb who quarterbacked the Cardinals a year ago, is off to Buffalo. The Bills were in need of a quarterback after releasing Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I think it is fair to say that Kolb, Flynn, and Palmer all have something in common. They are all average quarterbacks who at times have shown flashes of brilliance, but are simply not consistent enough at this stage of their careers.

Meanwhile, one could argue that the Dallas Cowboys rewarded a quarterback for being average when they signed Tony Romo to an amazing six year deal worth $108 million on Friday. Romo was one of three professional athletes who signed massive contracts last week, joining Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander (seven years, $180 million) and San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey (nine years, $167 million). The biggest differences between Romo’s contract versus Verlander and Posey’s contract is that Romo’s contract is not guaranteed.

Dolphins acquire Wallace from Steelers

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

Mike Wallace (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)

The Miami Dolphins have made a major splash with the free agent season in the National Football League now underway.

On Tuesday, the Dolphins signed wide receiver Mike Wallace to a five year deal worth $60 million. The signing of Wallace is the third time this week that a significant NFL receiver is changing teams. Percy Harvin went from Minnesota to Seattle and Anquan Boldin went from Baltimore to San Francisco.

Wallace led the Steelers with 836 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 2012. He will be complementing Brian Hartline in Miami, who had a breakout season in 2012 with 1083 receiving yards.

In other NFL news, the Buffalo Bills will be in search of another quarterback after they announced the release of Ryan Fitzpatrick. It seems they will pursue a quarterback via the draft rather than free agency. Right now former Minnesota Viking and Seattle Seahawk Tavaris Jackson is slated to be the starter.

Bills name Doug Marrone head coach

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

According to the Associated Press, the Buffalo Bills have found their replacement for Chan Gailey.

On Monday, the Bills named Doug Marrone as their next head coach. Marrone spent the last four years coaching the University of Syracuse Orangemen, and winning the Big East Conference with a 8-5 record last season.

Marrone takes over a Bills team that finished in last place in the AFC East this year with a 6-10 record.  Marrone beat out former Chicago Bears Head Coach Lovie Smith, former Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt, Arizona Cardinals Defensive Co-ordinator Ray Horton and Oregon University Head Coach Chip Kelly.

Week 16 NFL Picks

Sunday, December 23rd, 2012

Drew Brees (D.B. King, Wikimedia Commons)

A bad week last week left me at 7-9, so I am 137-88-1 on the season following Atlanta’s 31-18 win over Detroit last night. Here are my week 16 predictions:

11am

Cincinnati over Pittsburgh–I really liked how the Bengals played in the second half last week against Philadelphia.

Green Bay over Tennessee–The Packers still have something to play for as they are battling San Francisco for the number two seed.

New Orleans over Dallas–In a mild upset, the Saints stop Dallas’s three game winning streak as I’m projecting Drew Brees to have a great day.

Indianapolis over Kansas City–The Chiefs were horrible offensively against the Raiders last week, a team that has given up 44 more points than Indianapolis. (more…)

Weekend Sports Preview–December 15 & 16–NFL

Sunday, December 16th, 2012

Russell Wilson (Larry Maurer, Wikimedia Commons)

The National Football League is coming down the stretch to the end of the regular season with five games that will be available for viewers to watch.

Here they are:

Sunday–New York Giants @ Atlanta Falcons–TSN2–11am–The NFC East leading New York Giants will be without running back Ahmad Bradshaw Sunday when they take on the NFC South leading Atlanta Falcons. That should be ok however based on the exceptional performance by David Wilson a week ago against the Saints, where he had 100 yards on just 13 carries. The Giants are 8-5 and the Falcons are 11-2.

Sunday–Denver Broncos @ Baltimore Ravens–CBS–11am–The Ravens did something stunning this week. They fired offensive co-ordinator Cam Cameron, despite scoring the fifth most points in the AFC. The firing is stunning because it has been the Ravens’ defense that has been struggling with its veterans just getting older. Both teams are headed to the postseason with Denver at 10-3 and Baltimore at 9-4.

Jaguars name Mike Mularkey head coach

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

The Jacksonville Jaguars have named Mike Mularkey as their head coach, replacing interim head coach Mel Tucker and former permanent head coach Jack Del Rio.

Mularkey, who played in the NFL as a tight end from 1983-1991 with the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers, has been in the NFL as a coach since 1994. He has previous head coaching experience with the Buffalo Bills from 2004-2005, where he went 14-18 over two seasons.

Mularkey has held offensive co-ordinator positions with the Steelers, Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons, and been in charge of tight ends with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mularkey will have to do a better job in Jacksonville than he did last Sunday in the NFC Wildcard game in New York City. Sunday at Giants Stadium, the Falcons failed to score a point on offense in a 24-2 loss to the New York Giants. Their only two points came on a first half safety.

Mularkey will now be working closely with Maurice Jones-Drew, one of the elite running backs in the NFL.

Broncos beat Steelers in OT

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Demaryius Thomas (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)

In the first ever game with the new overtime format in the National Football League, the Denver Broncos made sure the overtime was short and sweet.

On their first play of overtime, Tim Tebow found Demaryius Thomas for an 80 yard touchdown pass as the Broncos defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-23 on Sunday.

Under the new overtime rules, each team has the opportunity to get the football once during the overtime unless the offensive team scores a touchdown or the defensive team scores a touchdown.

Tim Tebow’s 316 yards passing was the most passing yards the Steelers gave up to a quarterback this season. Previously, Joe Flacco threw 300 yards in the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 win over Pittsburgh in week nine.

Thomas had 204 yards receiving for the Broncos. The NFL record is 240 yards to Eric Moulds of the Buffalo Bills in 1998.

Denver, which dominated the second quarter by scoring 20 unanswered points before the Steelers dominated the second half, will now play the New England Patriots on Saturday night.

The Broncos might not have wide receiver Eric Decker in their lineup, who left in the first half with a knee injury.

Tiger-Cats name Cortez head coach

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have found their replacement to the fired Marcel Bellefeuille.

On Saturday, the Tiger-Cats named George Cortez as their head coach. Cortez, most recently was the quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League.

This past season he helped oversee Ryan Fitzpatrick record a career high 3832 passing yards and 24 touchdown passes. However, after a fast start where the Bills went 5-2, they only won one more game in their final nine games.

Cortez has a strong history in the  Canadian Football League. He has worked as an assistant coach for the Montreal Concordes, Montreal Alouettes, Ottawa Rough Riders, Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders. He has also spent extensive time with incoming quarterback Henry Burris. Cortez was the Stampeders’ offensive co-ordinator from 2006-2009, and the two led Calgary to a Grey Cup in 2008.

Hamilton had a record of 8-10 last season, and advanced to the Eastern Final, where they lost to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 12-13–CFL Playoffs, NFL, NHL, CIS, NCAA

Friday, November 11th, 2011

On Sunday, the Calgary Stampeders (11-7) will go on the road to take on the Edmonton Eskimos (11-7) in the CFL Western Division Semi-Final.

The Eskimos won the season series 2-1, but the Stampeders won their only matchup at Commonwealth Stadium, 30-20 in Edmonton on September 9.

But this is a much different Stampeders team than what was put on the field by Head Coach and General Manager John Hufnagel two months ago. Since then, Hufnagel has replaced Henry Burris with Drew Tate at the quarterback position and Joffrey Reynolds with Jon Cornish at running back.

Still I cannot ignore the fact that in the Labour Day rematch, Burris passed for 316 yards and Reynolds ran for 80 yards.

But since Tate has taken over the starting role in Calgary, the Stampeders are 3-0.

The big news in Edmonton is the health of running back Jerome Messam, who, according to TSN, is questionable with a lower-body injury that flared up during Monday’s practice. Messam became the first Canadian to rush for 1000 yards since 2000 this season. The game can be seen Sunday on TSN at 2:30pm.

By the way, my gut is telling me the Stamps will win. I feel the veteran leadership, healthier offensive line and playoff experience for the Stampeders is key and will get them through on Sunday.

Week 9 NFL Notes

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Matt Moore (Greg Keene, Wikimedia Commons)

The biggest surprise from the weekend came from the Miami Dolphins who absolutely hammered the Kansas City Chiefs 31-3. I don’t think anybody who follows the NFL expected a tropical Florida crush in the heart of Missouri, especially after the Chiefs were impressive the previous week in defeating the San Diego Chargers 23-20 in overtime. Quarterback Matt Moore had his finest game of the season, as he threw for three touchdown passes, 244 yards and a quarterback rating of 147.5.

The Dolphins won their first game of the year (1-7), and with all of the talk that Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden taking over from Tony Sparano, it looks like Sparano has saved his job for another week. The Chiefs meanwhile fell to 4-4.

But week nine was about the marquee matchups.

If you liked offense, the Green Bay Packers continued their unbeaten run (8-0) in defeating the San Diego Chargers 45-38, in a game where both teams combined for 83 points. Aaron Rodgers had four touchdowns, and threw for 247 yards, including 105 to Jordy Nelson. Even though Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers (4-4) had four touchdowns himself and 385 yards passing, he had three interceptions to Rodgers’ zero.

There were also some very interesting defensive battles Sunday.

Weekend Sports Preview–November 5 & 6–NHL, NCAA, CFL, NFL & World Golf Championship

Nikolai Khabibulin (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

From every angle possible, it is a great time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. The kids are producing. The veterans are producing. The entire team is buying into Tom Renney’s defensive-minded system and Nikolai Khabibulin has been completely spectacular.

On Saturday night, the Oilers (8-2-2), visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena (CBC, 8pm). Edmonton is currently tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for first place in the Western Conference. They have also only given up 18 goals all season long, five fewer than second place Dallas at 23 goals. The recent play of Khabibulin led Brad May of Rogers Sportsnet to say last night that Khabibulin right now “is the best goaltender in the NHL.”

The Coyotes meanwhile are trying to get to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third year in a row. The last two seasons they have lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. So far in 2011-12, they are 6-4-2, and tied with the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings for fifth place in the Western Conference.

The Coyotes’ top player this season is Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native Ray Whitney, who leads Phoenix with five goals, seven assists.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Weekend Sports Preview–October 29-30–NHL, CFL, ISU, NFL

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

It is an absolute marvelous time to be an Edmonton sports fan. The Oilers are in first place and the Edmonton Eskimos (10-6) can clinch first place in the Western Division with a win over the British Columbia Lions (9-7) at B.C. Place tonight (TSN, 8:00PM).

So when was the last time the Eskimos finished first in the West? You have to go all the way back to 2003 when they finished with a record of 13-5 and beat the Montreal Alouettes 34-22 to win the Grey Cup in Regina.

If the Eskimos hope to finish first in the West, they’ll need to play a full sixty minutes on the road, something they failed to do last week in Toronto. Edmonton once had a 31-3 lead but allowed the Argonauts to make things interesting in the final quarter, as the Boatmen scored the last three touchdowns.

If the Eskimos do lose, they’ll need to beat Saskatchewan next week and hope Montreal beats British Columbia to finish first in the West.

A key to the Eskimos tonight will be Ricky Ray and Jerome Messam, who were both named as CFL Players of the week– Ray was offensive player of the week, and Messam was the top Canadian. If they can combine for 150 yards rushing, it puts the Eskimos in an excellent position to win.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Carson Palmer (Bing Images)

The Oakland Raiders now have a veteran quarterback that they will hope to use for the rest of the NFL season, and maybe, just maybe, into the promise land of the playoffs as well.

On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Bengals traded holdout Carson Palmer to the Oakland Raiders for a first round pick in 2012 and a second round pick in 2013.

At 4-2, the Raiders are currently tied with the  Buffalo Bills, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers for the AFC Wildcard spot. The Raiders are also half a game back of the AFC West division leading San Diego Chargers (4-1).

I know the Bengals received a significant amount of potential in the trade, but I’m a little surprised that President Mike Brown and head coach Marvin Lewis were willing to trade Palmer to a team they are battling for a playoff spot.

The trade also shows how much control head coach Hue Jackson has in Oakland since the recent passing of owner/general manager Al Davis.

Palmer, the 2002 Heisman Trophy winner with USC, has the Bengals record for passing yards in a season (4131),  touchdown passes in a season (32), and touchdown passes in a game (6).
