Jimmy Howard (Anna Enriquez, Wikimedia Commons)
The fact that two American goalies recorded shutouts on Thursday should start raising some eyebrows.
Jimmy Howard was brilliant in the Red Wings’ 2-0 win over Chicago as he made 28 saves last night and Jonathan Quick was equally great for the Kings in making 24 saves in their 3-0 win over the San Jose Sharks. Detroit currently leads Chicago 3-1 and Los Angeles leads San Jose 3-2 in the Western Conference semi-finals.
The fact that American goaltenders are performing well when it matters most is continuing a recent trend. It is a trend that shows American goalies are doing better than Canadian netminders.

Jay Bouwmeester (Wikimedia Commons)
It is safe to say that the Calgary Flames are officially in a time of transition, and yes Flames fans, you got what you are looking for and that is the start of a massive rebuilding process.
On Monday night prior to the Flames 4-1 loss to Edmonton, Calgary traded their most coveted defenceman in Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis Blues for two prospects and a conditional draft pick.
The prospects are Swiss goaltender Reto Berra and former Windsor Spitfire defenceman Mark Cundari. The conditional draft choice meanwhile is dependent on whether or not the Blues make the playoffs this season. If the Blues do not go to the playoffs in 2013, the Flames get the Blues’ number four pick in 2013 and then their number one pick in 2014.
In 33 games this season, Bouwmeester has six goals and nine assists for 15 points, but is a -11. However he is extremely valuable for his endurance because he has not missed a game since the 2005 lockout.

We’re coming to the second busiest sports month of the year. April. Where has March gone? I know.
Anyways. It is a huge weekend for the Edmonton Oilers as they will be hosting their two western Canadian foes– the Vancouver Canucks tonight (CBC, 8:00 p.m.) and the Calgary Flames on Easter Monday (Sportsnet, 7:30 p.m.).
With 15 games left on the schedule, the Oilers are three points back of the St. Louis Blues for a playoff spot. That means every five games, they will have to pick up a point on the Blues, and hope they are slightly better than three other teams that are in front of them– the Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Lindy Ruff (Wikimedia Commons)
The longest serving head coach in the National Hockey League is out of a job.
On Wednesday, the Buffalo Sabres fired Lindy Ruff, who has coached the Sabres since 1997 and played for the Sabres from 1979-1989.
There has been no announcement yet on his replacement, but according to Bob McKenzie of TSN, the favourite is Ron Rolston, who is currently the head coach of the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. The Americans are an affiliate of the Sabres.
Ron Rolston is the older brother of Brian Rolston, who played with the New Jersey Devils, Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins, Minnesota Wild and New York Islanders from 1994-2012.

The 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts starts today from Kingston, Ontario. For the first time since 1999 Team Canada is from Alberta.
Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin will be wearing the Canadian colours this week and will be participating field. Her first opponent this weekend is New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford (formerly Kelly), a six-time provincial champion, an impressive statistic when you realize Crawford is only 27. The opening draw is on TSN Saturday at noon mountain time.

The 47th Super Bowl will take place Sunday in New Orleans (CBS, 4:30 p.m.) with the Baltimore Ravens playing the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers have won the Super Bowl five times, while the Ravens won it once in 2001. This will also be a record tenth time the Super Bowl is in New Orleans. The last Super Bowl in Louisiana was in 2002 as the New England Patriots defeated the Saint Louis Rams 20-17.
Super Bowl XLVII will also be historical because brothers will be coaching against each other for the first time. Jim Harbaugh will take the reigns for San Francisco, with his older brother John Harbaugh in charge of Baltimore.
The Ravens (10-6) led the AFC North, while the 49ers (11-4-1) led the NFC West.

Olli Jokinen (Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames have lost their leader in assists from last season.
On Monday it was confirmed that the Winnipeg Jets had signed Olli Jokinen to a two year deal worth nine million.
Jokinen had 38 assists for the Flames last season to lead the team and was also second in points (61) and third in goals (23).
The Flames on Monday simply decided to spend their money on Jiri Hudler rather than Olli Jokinen.
Jokinen maybe six years older than Hudler, but Jokinen has proven he is a more complete player. I know Jokinen had only 11 more points, but he also had a whopping 96 more shots on goal.
The Jets love Finnish talent and Jokinen will give Winnipeg hockey fans a glimpse of the past when they had the great Teemu Selanne.

According to the Canadian Press, the Calgary Flames have named Jacques Cloutier as an assistant coach.
Cloutier spent 12 seasons (from 1996-2009) as the assistant coach of the Colorado Avalanche and worked directly with Bob Hartley while he was the Avalanche Head Coach from 1998-2003. Cloutier also worked alongside head coaches Marc Crawford, Tony Granato and Joel Quenneville in Colorado.
During his playing career, Cloutier was a goaltender with the Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks, and Quebec Nordiques.
A third round pick, 55th overall, by the Sabres in the 1979 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Cloutier won a career high 18 games with the Blackhawks in 1990.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are not only playing like a team that hasn’t won the Stanley Cup in forty-five years, they’re also playing like a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in forty-five years.
Tuesday night against the Buffalo Sabres, the Leafs just found a new way to lose a hockey game. Leading the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 with six minutes left, Alexander Sulzer pulled the Sabres within one before Jordan Leopold tied the score at five goals apiece. Derek Roy then scored the game winner in overtime when Dion Phaneuf took a two minute penalty for shooting the puck over the glass.
So what does the 6-5 Buffalo win mean? Well, the Sabres are tied with the Washington Capitals for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with Washington having the tie-breaker. Buffalo plays Philadelphia and Boston while Washington plays Florida and the New York Rangers.
I think we all new the Leafs were bad? But this bad? Spruce Grove’s Ben Scrivens has shown flashes of brilliance, but it is difficult to stay positive when you give up six goals in one night.
I predicted the Leafs to make the playoffs at the beginning of the season. I was wrong. It will be interested to see how long Toronto will take before they gut the team and move in the same path as Edmonton. Oh wait. I don’t think that will happen because they have a GM that shows interest in trading draft picks. Sorry Leaf fans. I don’t see you winning the Cup or even making the playoffs for another 45 years!

Patrick Chan (David Carmichael, Wikimedia Commons)
2011 Lionel Conacher Award winner Patrick Chan of Ottawa, Ontario is one step closer to defending his title at the World Figure Skating Championships in Nice, France.
Today, Chan put down a solid short program, and leads the Czech Republic’s Michal Brezina by 1.74 points. Due to the fact the television coverage on CBC is absolutely lousy, the event can be seen live on www.cbcsports.ca or if you have Bold. The final flight of skaters in the men’s event is at 8am and the final flight of skaters in the women’s event is at 1:30pm on Saturday with Alena Leonova of Russia in the lead. In the pairs competition today, Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov hammered the strong German pair of Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy by 8.04 points, but only hung onto the silver medal behind the Germans after a poor short program.

Brier Tankard (Wikimedia Commons)
The 2012 Tim Horton’s Brier commences today from Saskatoon. Alberta will be represented this year by Kevin Koe who curled out of the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton in recent years before making the switch to the Glencoe Curling Club in Calgary for this season.
Koe’s opening game will be seen live tonight at 5:30pm on TSN against British Columbia’s Jim Cotter.
In my opinion there are four teams that will contend for the championship. Koe, the 2010 World Champion, will be joined by Glenn Howard of Ontario, the 2007 World Champion, Brad Gushue of Newfoundland, the 2006 Olympic Winter Games Champion, and Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario, who finished in third place at the 2010 Tim Horton’s Brier.
The field will not have Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton, who won the 2011 World Curling Championship, and defeated Howard 8-6 in last year’s final. Stoughton failed to make the Manitoba Provincial Semi-Final in Dauphin, Manitoba this year.
The first televised game is Manitoba versus Quebec today at 12:30pm with draw times of 7:30am, 12:30pm and 5:30pm tomorrow.

I was expected to be very busy this afternoon writing about a significant number of trades.
The bottom line, there might have been one that I’ll get to later. But living in Alberta, I think it comes as a huge surprise how little the Oilers did and that the Flames did nothing today.
Message to Nikolai Khabibulin, Ales Hemsky, and Ryan Smyth. It’s time to step up. Management has shown confidence in all three of you and it’s time to take your game to the next level.
As for the Flames, it looks like they will continue to battle for a playoff spot. Good news for Flames fans is that Miikka Kiprusoff is reminding you of 2004 and if you get into the playoffs, anything can happen.

Lindy Ruff (Wikimedia Commons)
For the third time this season someone has got injured in the National Hockey League during warm-up or practice.
On Monday, Buffalo Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff broke his ribs when he collided with defenceman Jordan Leopold and forward Ville Leino. Ruff broke three ribs, but is expected to be back at practice Tuesday and behind the bench Wednesday when the Sabres play host to the Boston Bruins.
As mentioned, this is the third bizarre incident this season. Earlier in the year, Edmonton Oilers forward Taylor Hall lost an edge and was cut in the head by a Corey Potter skate blade prior to an Oilers game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Hall would need thirty stitches to heal the wound which was very close to the eye area.
Then in Los Angeles on January 23, Ottawa Senators forward Jason Spezza was cut above the right eye after the hockey puck bounced off the glass and hit the two-time all-star. Hall and Spezza were not wearing helmets.
What precautions do you think players and coaches need to take during practices and pre-game warm-ups, if any? We would like to hear from you.

The National Hockey League has suspended Chicago Blackhawks’ enforcer Danny Carcillo seven games for hitting Edmonton Oilers’ defenceman Tom Gilbert from behind on Monday night.
Carcillo received a five minute major boarding penalty and a game misconduct. The Oilers scored two power play goals with the five minute man advantage en route to a 4-3 win.
It is the Oilers’ only victory on their seven game road trip, that is extended because of the World Junior Hockey Championships.
This is the tenth time in his career that Carcillo has been either fined or suspended. This time he will lose over $66,000.
Gilbert injured his knee on the play and has not yet returned to the Oilers lineup. Rookie and Calder Trophy favourite Ryan Nugent-Hopkins injured his shoulder in the Oilers win over Chicago Monday when he caught an edge and slid awkwardly into the boards. He seems to be day-to-day right now.
The Oilers play the St. Louis Blues this evening after losing 4-3 to Buffalo on Tuesday night.
